I hope all of you have a great holiday weekend. But remember this: Remember
the ones for whom we have this "holiday." This is actually Memorial Day, not
as the media has it, "The beginning of the summer vacation season." It is the
day set aside to remember those who selflessly gave their lives in defense of
freedom all over this world.
If there is a Memorial Day service in your town, attend it, and let the ones
who survive know their cause was not forgotten. If your town does not have a
Memorial Day service, contact the powers that be and find out why!
Today, there are 1100+ men buried on the USS Arizona, who never got to see
the light of day on Dec. 7, 1941. They died on the ship and that is where
they stayed. Let them know they are not forgotten, and observe Memorial Day,
just as they observed special days in Mayberry. Maybe your band is as bad,
but it can still play! Maybe your choir has someone who sings off key, but
they can still sing! These men gave their all so we can still gather to sing
and play. Let not their death have been in vain.

Whoever wrote about the "Angry Andy years" was right on, sorry to say. It
breaks
my heart to even think about the fact that in these last episodes Andy "just
is Not the SAME".
The other evenin', during the supper-time time slot show, I was listening
to the show while in another room.  I could not even see the television screen;
I could only hear everything. When Andy would be saying his lines I was
thinking
that his tone of voice was different, like he was in a bad mood; it went on
all the way through that episode. Then it dawned on me: it MUST be a color
episode.
I got up and walked into the other room and looked. Sure enough, it was a color
episode. I could tell simply by the TONE of his voice and the way he said his
lines! It breaks my heart to hear Andy so angry. (We love you, ANDY, anyway!!)

The comments into the newsletter have been great, especially lately. Y'all
keep up the good work.

In Andy's Rival (where Frank Smith has Andy worried about losing Helen),
there is a scene where Andy and Goober are walking back from the show (movie)
and Goober ask him if he "wanted to go over to Jasper, theyr'e having a
tractor show over there".
I wondered if any of you Alabama trained noticers picked up on that? It was
the first time I ever remembered hearing that line. I thought it interesting
being Goober is from that area in Alabama. Of course, not being a official
trained noticer, I could have not heard that just right. Let me hear from you.

Aunt Bee was actually called "Bee Taylor" on more than one occasion...usually
by her best friend/occasional rival, Clara Edwards (who went through more
than her own share of name changes)...

I really feel like the color episodes get an unfair rap too often. They're
the only time we ever get to see Emmett and Howard and our last chance to see
Floyd (whose comic genius is even more on display here). And we get to see
the characters actually taking some chances in their lives (Andy opens a
laundromat, Aunt Bee opens a Chinese restaurant and learns to fly, Howard
moves to a tropical island, Goober actually gets in a serious relationship,
etc.). And there are some genuine gems buried in those years (the spaghetti
episode, the one where Opie writes the paper on the Battle of Mayberry,
etc.). And not to mention the novelty of the guest star list in those days
(Jack Nicholson, Rob Reiner, Teri Garr, etc.). And obviously, there's
Barney's return, Emmy-winning appearances, which seem to not get mentioned
enough anymore...

I thought that was interesting too. Also, in the first season of "Gomer
Pyle, USMC," Gomer is mentioned as being in *his* early 20s.

Well, now my first inclination was to make it a great lawman's name, like
Pinkerton (the famous detective) or Purvis (the FBI man). But then I'm sure
that Barn would have pointed out that his name wasn't Bernard Pinkerton Fife
for nothing!

So seein' as how presidents' names were popular in the show, it seems like a
natural choice would be "Bernard Polk Fife." What do y'all think?

First off, you ought to be ashamed of yourself for talkin' ugly about our

Now to your question: There are 159 black and white episodes (the first
five seasons) and 90 color episodes (the last three seasons), for a grand
total of 249 episodes.

Hi,

The other week TVLand showed several interviews with TAGS cast members. At
one point, Andy, while talking about Francis Bavier, said something like "I
don't know what it was about me that she hated, but there sure was
something." Also, Howard Morris indicated that Ms. Bavier could be quite
difficult at times. Does anyone know anything about this? I had not heard
it before.

This is in response to BModero who questioned what that "P" could stand for
in Barney's middle name.
I thought about that for a while and came up with a real good one. I think
that "P" could only stand for Percival. It just seems to fit with the times,
the place and the person. It's is also a name I believe Barney would
hesitate to acknowledge.

Have a good Memorial Day, friends, and please, if you drink -- don't drive!

or maybe Bernard Philemon Fife?
or maybe Bernard Peyton Fife (you know, like that TV Show "Peeton Place")?

One of my favorite lines/scenes is when Barney did his match-making thing
with Andy and Helen at Thelma Lou's house. Barney was interrogating Helen
about her cooking savy and was upset when she said her husband would have to
eat frozen dinners. Andy went to her defense saying that it was the 20th
century. Barney said "I know what century it is" - When he found out Helen
didn't know how to cook leg of lamb (Andy's favorite dish) - he wanted to get
the show over with. He told Thelma Lou "She can't cook - she can't do
nothin!" Then he put his head around the door and hollered "DINNER" before
it was ready. Nobody could have put that scene across like Don Knotts. I
laughed until somebody told me to shut up.

Subject: my mistake, same digest and trivia question

My mistake was not completely reading or understanding the question about
the
recruiter giving the physical exam. My regrets to Kelly and to anyone
else I gave
  the wrong information.

Now this is for Sandra Sils. The reason the trivia question was answered
in the same
digest about the slit shoes is, I read the digest on the web site before
I received the
digest in e-mail. I'm sorry for any confusion this may have caused.
When I go back to
working days this won't happen, until I work nights again. I have to
tape TAGS to see
  my Mayberry friends.

This is a repeat trivia question, I don't have the memory to answer.
Please Help.
The class reunion of Andy and Barney was in at least two episodes. What
was the two
different years shown on the banner at the reunions? The first reunion
was in a black
and white episode and the other was a color episode.

What does BTW mean? I have seen it in the digest and I'm a little
puzzled.
