And don't forget some of the people who made up the writing staff of "Your
Show of Shows," a virtual Who's Who of movies and television comedy: Woody All
en, Mel Brooks, Larry Gelbart and Neil Simon. And, from what I understand,
Carl Reiner based many elements of "The Dick Van Dyke Show" (a popular No. 2
show for many TAGS fans) on his experiences with Sid Caesar and "Your Show of
Shows" and based several "Dick Van Dyke" characters on members of its writing
and production staff.

MY FIRST LETTER!

In time for Halloween 2001, I am planning a Don Knott's film festival here
in Chicago.
I hope to feature a few of his films he made for Universal, headlining with
"The Ghost & Mr. Chicken."
There will be other activities, hopefully a keynote from Don("brave is short
for bravery - let me clarify this"), with episodes of Andy Griffith
sprinkled in.

I am looking for volunteers and information. Any interest?

I asked a two-part question a couple of weeks' ago, but only one part
received an answer. Here is the unanswered question: Since Opie appeared
in episode 1 of Mayberry R.F.D. (Andy & Helen's wedding), what happened to
his character after that? Did he live with Sam? Did he join Gomer in the
Marines? Did he rent Howard's hut in the Caribbean?

Thanks.

With last night's showing of "A Warning from Warren" on TVLand yesterday, I
now, unless my calculations are off,
have ALL 249 TAGS episodes! YEA!!!! (I did mean to shout just then...I think
having all the episodes is worth
shouting about! :))

I also noticed something when I watched Gomer Pyle, USMC yesterday. They
showed the episode when Gomer was sending
love letters from a "secret admirer" to Sgt. Carter. The librarian was the
same lady who helped Opie pick out a
pair of stockings for Helen when he had a crush on her. Just something I
noticed, even though I do not claim to be
a trained noticer! :)

And one of my very favorite TAGS lines..."Opie, stockin's is somethin' a lady
WEARS!"

My favorite TAGS line (or at least one of them) is from Haunted House:
"I guess that makes you sheriff now"
Also, this episodes contains one of my favorite scenes. Andy walking into the
haunted house with Barney and Goober on either side, slightly behind him,
their faces are hilarious!!. When Andy bends over to pick up the ball, they
both bend over with him! PRICELESS!!! Cracks me up everytime!

You can still download the clock from TV land if this is the one your talkn
about.
Go to TV land, then shows, then TAGS, then Pics and sounds. It's at the bottom
of the sound section.
They have a windows and Mac version available

I don't think anyone has mentioned the "P" middle name(s) that
were actually mentioned in an episode:

the boys were trying to sell was good for curing mange and other assorted
problems?

I wrote in the other day, but got no response, so thought I'd write again.
Some folks have talked about getting tape number 11 in the Columbia House
videos. I had the 800 number for Columbia House, but have lost it. If
someone could post it here, or write me direct, I sure would appreciate it.

The Epilogs on TVland continue to bring me occasional pleasant surprises.
Last night was a color episode that I had seen several times, but what a
great ending (Taylor's in Hollywood). There they were 3000 miles from North
Carolina (and quite a distance from Andy's comfort zone) staying at the posh
Piedmont Hotel in the social epicenter of the West Coast, Hollywood
California. With a free night and lots of options including the Chinese
Theatre and Hollywood and Vine, Aunt Bee and Opie had an unusual request.
They wanted to stay in and watch a favorite TV show. How prophetic is
that..of what we feel sometimes? You get in a strange city, have lots of
options but if it happens to be at a time when the Griffith Show is on..we
feel that draw to "go home" if only for a half hour with the comforts and
familiarity of our favorite show and all its characters, Andy and the gang.
great epilog.

Thanks for the answers to my "who didn't dance?" question. It seems we're
agreed on Otis, Floyd, Peggy, and Ellie...but did Aunt Bee ever dance on
screen? If so, please name the episode or scene. Sashaying through the
house while humming doesn't count.

Also, glad a few of you liked the Big Chicken story. I didn't mention the
height. It was not given because a picture was shown in the paper but is
appears to be 8 to 10 feet tall. It's still available, along with the
restaurant....just standing out there all by itself. I hope it doesn't get
struck by lightning. It's almost as tall as a giraffe..and probably just a
selfish! I think Harriet the Chicken-thief has her eye on it. That would
be some caper wouldn't it? Biggest heist attempt since the Mobile museum.
Upchurch would nap 'er though with a molouge. Just imagine how deep her
footprints would be with a 400 pound chicken under her arm?

Subject: Ruta Lee

At times before, we've talked about people appearing in both TAGS and Gomer
Pyle, USMC. TV Land just showed all four of the episodes involving Andy,
Opie, and Aunt Bee going to Hollywood. Ruta Lee appeared as a movie star in
the 3rd one, when Andy gets pictures taken with her and Helen gets mad. In an
episode of Gomer Pyle, USMC Ruta Lee again plays a movie star who decides to
attend a base dance and asks for a Marine to escort her. Gomer's the lucky
man who gets to escort her, but Lou Ann gets mad at him -- strikingly similar
episodes, huh?
