I noticed the dirt road, too, and concentrated hard to try to see if it were
in fact "made of" rather than "covered with." I never noticed the Taylors'
street being unpaved. Perhaps heavy rains in the L.A. area during that week
of filming the "Aunt Bee Learns to Drive" episode?

No, he really drank it. He made a statement on some show I saw him on that
that's why his facial expressions were so funny because he got an egg caught
in his throat that didn't want to go down.

It's a 1955 Ford Victoria covertable stick shift - one of the hotest cars
ever manufactured. One of my many many high school boy friends had one - it
was 2-tone hot pink & black. We'd criuse around the drive-ins with "Rock
Around the Clock" just blaring away on the radio - I mean how cool can a
person be anyway.
Linda - This Goober;s been around the block a couple of times.

<<<<of watching the show: The road in front of the Taylor house is a dirt road!

How did I miss that?>>>>
Well, the other night, when the last time Ernest T Bass was on there fighting
the Englishter, the road was dirt.
In tonight's (6pm) Gypsy episode, I once again saw the restaurant that said
"Hotel BAR and Restaurant". Now, why was that there if Mayberry was dry? Or
WAS it?
Was that trolley tracks ever seen in ANY other episodes besides the Green Ink
episode where Aunt Bee worked for counterfieters? hey from the ozarks

Dear TAGS friends:
As you recall; Hal Smith(Otis) drank many a "hangover
elixir" on the show.
The concoction was Orange or Tomato Juice, A raw egg, hot
sauce, and other ingredients, but what was truly in the
glass? He didnt DRINK that poison did he or did the
producers switch the glass to straight juice?

Ron Brown

Ray:

He did indeed drink it. The mixture is classic Bloody Mary
mix without the alcohol and plus an egg. Hal said, in the
Book Mayberry 101, that he almost choked on the egg!
Remember Andy handed it right to him with no cut away shot
so he had to drink it - or do a retake and drink it
AGAIN!!!

Looks like a 1955 Ford to me.

That appears to be the 1956 Ford Victoria Sunliner convertible. It's a
beaut. Who'da thunk Aunt Bee would have the coolest car in Mayberry??

I noticed that too! I would *swear* it wasn't in other episodes. My guess
is there was a really big frogstrangler of a storm just before Aunt Bee
bought her car, in the "Mayberry" world. The real reason could be because
some movie set in the 1890s or something was shooting on that part of the lot
and the road was still dirty from it.

That is true, "The Lucy Show" and "Hazel" were both in color as far back as
1963. I had always heard Sheldon Leonard kept the shows in black and white
as a cost cutting measure. But the networks became fiercely competitive
about color in the mid 1960s so by 1966 just about all shows had switched.
In 1965, TAGS, "My Favorite Martian" and "Gilligan's Island" all went from
black and white to color on CBS, but "The Munsters" and "The Dick Van Dyke
Show" both stayed in black and white. And yes, I always heard it was sheer
coincidence Don Knotts left the show at this point...

I've seen a telephone in the living room beside Andy's chair (or was it the
sofa?) and, of course, the oldie wall telephone in the kitchen. Where else?

Yes, Hal Smith really did drink that concoction! The episode was "Dogs,
Dogs, Dogs." Years later, in an interview, he stated that when the prop man
stirred the drink (those are not really Andy's hands we see in the close-up
shot), he stirred it gently, and the egg yolk didn't break. When Hal drank
it, the yolk almost choked him, but he managed to swallow it.

It's possible that the sauce bottles had filled filled with something other
than their original contents (maybe colored water), but the egg was real,
and the fruit juice was probably real as well. Later, in the episode "Otis
the Artist," Warren mixes up a similar hangover cure for Otis.

>>>Does anyone know the reason(s) why TAGS began showing episodes in color?
Was it just coincidence that the colored episodes did not begin until after
Don Knotts left the show? Certainly, "color" was available prior to 1965.
As an example, you can see a very young Ron Howard in the movie version of
The Music Man which was made in about 1963.
>>>

You don't understand, TAGS was always filmed with color film. MAYBERRY was
black and white until the fall of 1964. What a shock it must have been to
all of her citizens to wake up and find that the town had turned to color!
They must have felt like Dorothy Gale when she stepped out of that
farmhouse.

BTW, the movie version of The Music Man came out in 1962. There's a subtle
reference to Ronny's character, Winthrop Paroo, in the TAGS episode "Andy
and Barney in the Big City." Barney challenges Opie with a tongue twister,
and after he attempts it, Opie replies, "You think that'th thumthin', you
oughta here me thing a thong!"

Unless I had my days mixed up, I think it was preemted for a biography
on Anthony Quinn who died earlier this week. The local newspaper guide
had listed the Andy one for thursday also. I so appreciate the
reminders for things of interest so we can tape them
I for one love the color episodes & usually look to see who wrote them.
I'm always delighted to find our Mayberry resident writer Harvey
Bullock's name on an episode that I have enjoyed. One recently, & I
don't recall the name or number, was one which Barney came back to visit
& was nervous about the man from prison who was out to get him. I loved
it when Barney told Andy that Warren should get credit for the capture
to encourage him, & Warren's obvious hero worship of Ol Barn.
