Yes, that's Howard Hesseman all right. Don Sturdy was another stage name early in his career. He also appears under that name in another TAGS episode, the one in which Goober pretends to own a chain of service stations to impress his friend at the car show. And "Don Sturdy" also played an obnoxious radical on "Dragnet". And by the way, was Andy and Barney cousins? We don't get a very good glimpse of what Andy's washing, but it looks like the black hood of a car...most likely the squad car. And yes, Andy's relationship to Barney is mentioned in not only the first, but also the second episode...and I think at least one more... The correct date would be 1963 and the episode title is "Barney's Sidecar." And yes, Turner's Grade is correct too. If you give 'em 35... You hit the nail right on the head in so many ways. Even when Andy makes fun of Barney (like the time he caught Barney saying "Cock a doodle doo" to Juanita--one of the funniest TAGS scenes ever) it's done with love and affection, the way southern men naturally "pick at" each other. I can think of a few other times Andy was less than perfect during the B&W years. The most obvious was when he tried to tell everyone the record company man was going to run off with all their money and not make good...showed what he knew. He also screwed up when he let Opie's runaway friend stay the night *before* bothering to call the kid's father. Boy, you hang out with the WBMUTBB gang for six or seven years, and people think you know EVERYTHING about Andy! :) A former co-worker's father apparently did something with Andy Griffith when they were young and wants to relive the moment with Andy now that they are getting old. (I have NO IDEA what this moment was.) I did a quick internet search and found an address for Andy Griffith at the William Morris Agency in Beverly Hills. I also suggested that they just write: Andy Griffith, Manteo, NC. It might get to our favorite TV sheriff that way. Any other suggestions?! Mayberry says thanks and happy .... mailing! Using my computer at the office, I accessed my answering machine at home using the remote feature. When it came time to record my outgoing message, I just played the appropriate wav file (In this case the one where Barney says, "Mayberry Sherriff's office, town headquarters, Deputy Barney Fife speakin', hello?" I just deleted the ring at the beginning of it). It worked great. You just need to have some sort of software that you can dial out on. I have been a TAGS watcher for over 30 years, my wife was the one who said that the same actor played both characters. So with your help I won the bet. Another thought , since I have been a member I have been reading alot of people's comments on the different shows that seem to be everyone's favorites. I have one that I haven't seen brought up yet. I don't know ther episode number but it's main topic is " CITIZEN'S ARREST". This episode just cracks me up. The scene in the street is hilarious, the way the citizens rally behind Gomer, and really take advantage of the opportunity to stick it to Barney. The following scene in the jail is also great, I have read alot of comments on alot of scenes involving different characters but in episode after episode Barney's plots, physical testing, and deputizing of Otis Campbell are some of the greatest in the shows history. So some of you long time watchers reelvaluate your choices and remember " The Mayberry Knottieing class meets here every Tuesday Night". ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Jun 2001 09:50:04 EDT From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: wbmutbb-digest V3 #165 Hi friends! Just want to see how many of how have had the privledge of meeting our friends from Mayberry. In 1986, I was working at the "Point After " nightclub in Honolulu and had the pleasure of meeting Jim Nabors. He talked to me for about 20 minutes and was kind and friendly. I wanted you all to know he is the same in person as he was on the show. Happy Birthday Jim. Did you know you can purchase a copy of it on video from A&E? I have been meaning to purchase the one on Don Knotts. Folks, even if you've already seen these shows on A&E, try to catch them again each time they air. It's common for A&E to replace the epilogue (the last minute of the program) with up-to-date information about what the subject has been doing recently. - --Paul ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Jun 2001 09:00:22 -0500 From: Paul Mulik <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: How old is Gomer? >>>I THOUGHT THAT JIM NABORS TURNED 70 LAST YEAR AND WOULD BE 71 THIS YEAR? The actor was a dead ringer for Howard Hessman of WKRP fame....however, the credits listed the part of Harry as played by Don Sturdy. Don Sturdy and Howard Hesseman are the same person. On TAGS, he also plays the hot dog man in "Goober Goes to an Auto Show." I've got a theory on why he may have changed his name: When The Dick Van Dyke Show was first created, the character of Alan Brady was originally going to be named Alan Sturdy. Morey Amsterdam pointed out that when spoken quickly, the name sounded like "Alan's dirty" so they changed it. Perhaps Don Sturdy realized the same problem with his name. - --Paul ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Jun 2001 09:02:20 -0500 From: Paul Mulik <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: car wash blues >>>It must have been Andy's truck, he was washing it in one scene when Barney came over. Bass Hey all! Don't know if any of you were listening to John Boy & Billy this morning, but Howard Morris (aka ETB) was on Open Line. He had a lot of good things to say about Mayberry and all of the fans of the show. He was definitely pushing the show with Don Knotts and Betty Lynn coming up in a couple of weeks in Pigeon Forge.
