I remember Jerry Van Dyke on TAGS, but not Dick Van Dyke. Which episode /
character? I'm curious.

I was watching the color episode last night when the new doctor came to town
(aka Father Mulcahy on MASH). It got me to thinking of how some people don't
care for these episodes, but this one gives an example of Andy's continued
kindness to others. In
case someone doesn't remember it, the new YOUNG dr. comes to town and the
Mayberrians don't want to go to such a young dr. However, Andy invites him to
dinner at the Taylor's home along with Clara, Floyd, and Helen. Then Opie
needs his tonsils out.
Well, of course this will be the deciding factor in whether or not the dr. is
successful in Mayberry. Andy waivers, but decides to trust the doctor to do
the surgery (with a push from Helen), and everything is fine, of course. All
this has just been
to say that Andy did change through the years, but deep down, he was still the
same old kind and sweet Ange. (I still think that Opie going into adolescence
threw him for a loop and changed things a little!) :) Lisa

What a great fantasy. Me and Otis will drink to that! While I was reading
Miss Poovey's idea of Opie's Ma - I kept seeing Nicole Kidman in my mind's
eye - I guess from remembering her role in "Far and Away". The only girl
friend of Andy's in high school that I can remember being mentioned was
Sharon DeSpain. It was supposedly one of the great romances of all time but
Sharon decided to be a big fish in a big pond while Andy liked being a big
fish in a little pond. However, he sure did plant one on her at the reunion
- - yeah Boy!! Another thought is that he may have met his wife when he was
over the water during the war.

I have a feeling you mean Jerry Van Dyke, I don't remember Dick ever being on
TAGS. Whether Jerry was on Matlock, though, I couldn't tell you, never
watched the show.

Aneta Corsaut played at least one other role on Matlock as a secretary
in another law office, Everett Greenbaum played a judge and Betty Lynn
played Ben's secretary in an episode with a foul-mouthed parrot.

I can't comment on Griffith and Knotts, but I have the
contract Frances Bavier signed for the episode of
Mayberry RFD, "Andy & Helen Get Married". She was
paid $2500 for the episode.

Good Summer Evening All -
I'm a little late in responding to Downtown Ron Brown concerning Find a Grave
and to Becky Boyd concerning Santa Lucia. I had to check some facts but now
I think I'm all prepared.
Ron, you mentioned Find A Grave. I am a member of both the Famous and the
Non-Famous parts of Find A Grave which is wonderful for those interested in
genealogy. I wanted you to know that I went to Howard McNears grave site and
e-mailed the man who submitted the photo of the marker. I received a
response today and I think you will be happy to know (what I already
suspected) that what you saw is a plaque. He only has a plaque because he is
in a Mausoleum where only Armed Forces Vets are interred. Everyone in that
particular section has the exact same plaque in their niche.
You are correct that Aunt Bee's grave looked much more "lavish," however,
that isn't the case.
For anyone interested in viewing any Famous people's graves or Non-famous
people (which contains over 2 and a half million memorial sites), or to add
your own family members, go to: www.FindAGrave.com I'm not being paid for
this. I just believe it is a wonderful site. Best of all, it is FREE.
Now to Becky Boyd - - Becky, I think I'm starting to sound like an
advertisement, but if you ever have questions about music or recording
artists go to: www.ampie.com
They seem to know just about everything that has to do with music. Just type
in Jim Nabors, and anything that he recorded will come up. A real good
resource.
I have a question which will surely show my ignorance about TAGS. Would
someone please tell me how it is that I heard Thelma Lou married Barney Fife
when I distinctly remember her showing up for a reunion and surprising
everyone with the news that she was married? I can't for the life of me
figure this one out.
One last thing before I go. I know I have taken up enough space. Just so
that you know, when I wrote last time about "contradictions" and kept
referring to my Mom as being "elderly, you know," that was done as a joke
which is why I repeated it twice in the same letter. My 76-year-old mother
is more energetic and on-the-go than this 55-year-old daughter. My mother
got a wonderful laugh out of what I wrote and thought it was clever. I did
not mean to offend anyone with my joke.
Take care everyone! Jeanne (from West Virginia)

Hello ALl
Looking forward to a real good time in Pigeon Forge. I know Tim McAbee has
worked really hard to put on a good event.
I just returned from Los Angeles and had the priveledge of seeing Barbara
Eden, Buddy Ebsen and William Schallert (all TAGS Alums) as well as many
other folks too.
For those interested in photographs (I've had several emails from ya) from
the archive, I will be at Baymont Inn. You can reach me at 540-819-7543.

in the last digest, Frank wrote
>Also, another question that's been bugging me
>for a long time, whatever happened to Andy's

Opie's ma's demise was never discussed, but we are given the impression
that she passed away very early in Opie's life. Rose seemed to be the
only mother figure that Opie ever knew. Now, misspoovey has her own
theory on the whole matter. Mind you, this is strictly my own insights
on things.....
Because of Opie's red hair, I have always imagined his Ma to be a
delicate Irish rose. I believe that she came over to take a tour of the
states, much like Malcom Merriweather did. Well, she took to Mayberry
and Mayberry took to her! Everyone was enchanted by her Irish lilt and
beguiling charm....especially a certain sheriff!!! I can just see Andy
convincing her to get a job at the dime store and rooming with Laura Lee
Hobbs! I imagine it was love at first sight, then a whirlwind courtship,
then a simple yet tasteful ceremony with Barney as best man. Probably
spent a short honeymoon at Myrtle Beach, relaxing on the shore, eating
shrimp and clamcakes and dancing the shag. Then back home to Mayberry
where they set up house. The happy, handsome couple were soon surprised
with the good news of a baby on the way! I can just picture Andy and his
Irish beauty sitting on the porch swing with Andy rubbing her tummy,
singing and cooing to the baby inside. But like so many births back
then, there were complications and the frail little woman passed away in
childbirth. Andy was totally crushed by the loss. This would explain why
Andy was so slow and cautious with all the on-screen girlfriends we
know. He had been so deeply and completely in love with Opie's ma that
his heart was afraid to take another chance. The fact that the dear
little thing had come from Ireland, explains why we never hear about
Andy romancing his wife in high school. It also explains why we never
hear about any relatives on her side coming to visit their little
grandson/nephew/cousin.
Now everyone may not agree with my spin of the situation but that's
okay! That's just my own Mayberry in my mind! I would love to hear other
folks thoughts on Opie's ma; if only to let me know that I'm not the
only one who thinks this hard on such matters!!!!

Subject: Star Billing
I would like to pose a question to the knowledgeable
ones of wbmutbb. It concerns the billing of stars.
The billing of stars is how the stars are listed in
the credits. In all television shows and Hollywood
movies the higher the listing the bigger the star.
For example, in one movie you will see John Wayne,
Robert Mitchum and Rickey Nelson. In Leave It To
Beaver, you see Hugh Beaumont, Barbara Billingsley,
Tony Dow, and Jerry Mathers. Although the entire
focus of LITB is Jerry he is listed last. Each star
is listed according to his experience and star appeal.
The bigger the star the higher the listing. Star's
agents fight like cats and dogs to get higher listing
because the higher the listing the more money the star
gets.
In most situations there is not any fighting because
Jerry Mathers would not fight to be listed above John
Wayne. He would be laughed out of Hollywood for even
trying.
The only show I ever remembering going against this
law of Hollywood is TAGS where Ronny Howard is listed
above Don Knotts and Frances Bavier. I thought Don
and Frances were far more accomplished actors. Am I
wrong on that score?
Did Rance Howard have the juice in Hollywood to get
Ronny the higher listing (and salary) above Don and
Frances? Does anyone have facts on the salaries being
paid to the actors? Don said he left the show early
because there was some sort of mix up as to whether
Andy was going to stay on the show. Don is such a
gentleman I believe he would say that rather than that
he was being billed and paid less than a kid.
I saw an article on Ron Howard in US magazine. He
said, "Andy and Don came by the set of Ransom. It was
funny - these hard-bitten New Yorkers here were just
awestruck seeing them both together. And yeah, they
were bugging me about casting, especially Andy: 'Why
don't you quit giving your father jobs and give me one
of those priest parts or something?' I do think about
it. It would be great if the right thing came along."
