That was "House Calls," which starred Wayne Rogers and Lynn Redgrave. She
played a desk nurse. I remember seeing her in it and not recognizing her...

Who could forget Episode #52, "Barney
and the Choir"? He was so bad he had to be silent and let someone else sing
I was thinking Barney did that unknowingly though, singing in front of the
audience *very* softly while another person sang (albeit bass, not tenor)
offstage into a microphone. Barney's facial expression in that scene is a
classic.

Caught part of a Love Boat this weekend where Gomer was this overfriendly,
sorta obnoxious passenger. And who did he spend the entire cruise
tormenting? None other than John Masters.
OK, passengers, if you'll all turn to good ol' 14A.

Durn! - Excuse me for talking ugly. I won't be able to be at the
Pigeon Forge show tonight. I'm only about 30-45 minutes from there,
but I've got some overnight business elsewhere. I'm looking forward
to hearing some great reports of the event. Ya'll have a great time!

This topic was never explored on The Show, but in real life it's not all
that unusual. As a music director, I've known many singers who sounded fine
when singing in a choir or in the congregation, but if they ever attempted a
solo, they were rotten (not just bad - rotten!)
The main reason is that when singing in a group, one gains confidence from
those around them (especially if others are singing the same part).
Additionally, some would-be soloists get very nervous, or OVER-confident
(like Barney), and this has a negative effect on the voice.

Sadly, Joanna Moore died of lung cancer in November of 1997. For them that
don't know, she was married to Ryan O'Neal, and she was the mother of
actress Tatum O'Neal, who was at one time married to tennis player John
McEnroe. John and Tatum produced three kids, which means that McEnroe's
kids are Joanna Moore's grandchildren.

That was "House Calls," which ran from 1979-1982.

Back to the question about Opie's mother, Paul is correct that very little
is mentioned of her, just one time by Andy when Opie asks "Is that was the
kind of love he and Mom had", and Andy replies "Yes it was". If you want to
see on version of what could have happened, please check out "The Greatest
Story Never Told' on the Fan Fiction Link on the TAGSRWC club website.

Fan fiction is not for everybody, but I find it a fun expansion of what we
know from seeing the show, and I try to keep my stories as true to the
characters, and concepts laid out by the REAL writers as possible. Check it
out.
I would really rather be in Tennessee today (June 25) at the Country Tonite
theatre. I got to go to a TAGS reunion show there last year, and I know
tonight will be fun with Don Knotts, Betty Lynn and Howard Morris as well
as our buddies David Browning and Allan "Floyd" Newsome. Its an 8-hour
drive and I just can't take the vacation days. I hope we have some members
who will take pictures and give us some reviews. I just can't imagine ole
Barney and Thel together after all these years....I bet he even lets her
come in his den now and then.
On Barney's singin' voice...My theory is that is was just a confidence
thing. All he needed was a diploma from his Music teacher sayin' he could
read and write music a little, that he knew a little about larynx exercises,
acapella singing, and breathing exercises of a more exotic nature We-They
We-They We-Theyyyyyy. As soon as he got this singin' diploma from Mrs.'
Poultice he overcame his singin' curse (according to Buzz Fluehart's theory
and the Ink-blot Bat or Butterfly Barney Fife nose-pinchin test in
Learn-a-month Magazine). He was then able to sing normal. The same thing
happened to Gomer and his car fixin' and Ernest T and his readin'. I
should know about this because I am....

Motor City Greetings!
Does anyone on the digest know or ever heard how much the main characters (Andy
Griffith, Don Knotts) were paid per episode? Secondly, does anyone know what
it cost to produce the show (per episode)? Lastly, who owns the television
rights to TAGS?

I happened to "fall awake" early this AM and watched the
last hour of "A Face in the Crowd" when I should have been
non-adventure sleeping. Those of you that haven't seen Andy
in this great movie should rent it and check it out.
I shouldn't turn the TV on at 4am anymore. I've got the
movie on tape too, but i couldn't stop watching it. I'm
going to go in the back room and see if Barney's got any
coffee on.

Jewell, i too have often wandered about Barney`s singing voice-did he have
one or not?-glad you brought this up-there are several scenes with Barney
singing in the choir with no complaints, and i remember one scene, in
addition to the one you mentioned, with him and Andy sitting on the front
porch after church, and singing "Church in the Wildwood" with perfect
harmony. But i also remember a scene with Andy and Thelma Lou discussing
Barney not being able to sing-she says, "i love him, but he cant sing"-did
the writers just forget from one episode to the next each character had? I
often wandered why they changed this and other characteristics around,
depending on which episode you were watching-either way, tho, i still think
Barney is the Katz!

Hey Gang,
Talking about other roles that Helen (Aneta Corsaut) played, nobody has
mentioned that she appeared a few times on 'Matlock'. The one I remember
specifically is one where she played the preciding judge in a case where Andy
was defending someone. It was different to see her in that type of role but
I enjoyed seeing her on the show.
Speaking of 'Matlock', some other TAGS folks who have been on are Don Knotts
(of course), Howard Sprague, and Dick Van Dyke. Can anyone think of others?

The show never gave us any real info, but never fear! Misspoovey has it
all figured out!
Because of Opie's red hair, I have always imagined his Ma to be a
delicate Irish rose. I believe that she was a young adventurous girl who
came over to take a tour of the states, much like Malcom Merriweather
did. Well, she took to Mayberry and Mayberry took to her! Everyone was
enchanted by her Irish lilt and beguiling charm....especially a certain
sheriff!!! I can just see Andy convincing her to get a job at the dime
store and rooming with Laura Lee Hobbs! I imagine it was love at first
sight, then a whirlwind courtship, then a simple yet tasteful ceremony
with Barney as best man. Probably spent a short honeymoon at Myrtle
Beach, relaxing on the shore, eating shrimp and clamcakes and dancing
the shag. Then back home to Mayberry where they set up house. The happy,
handsome couple were soon surprised with the good news of a baby on the
way! I can just picture Andy and his Irish beauty sitting on the porch
swing with Andy rubbing her tummy, singing and cooing to the baby
inside. But like so many births back then, there were complications and
the frail little woman passed away in childbirth. Andy was totally
crushed by the loss. This would explain why Andy was so slow and
cautious with all the on-screen girlfriends we know. He had been so
deeply and completely in love with Opie's ma that his heart was afraid
to take another chance. The fact that the dear little thing had come
from Ireland, explains why we never hear about Andy romancing his wife
in high school. It also explains why we never hear about any relatives
on her side coming to visit their little grandson/nephew/cousin.
That's how I imagine it was; any comments?

Subject: Columbia House Tape For Sale
Hey Folks,
I have one of the Columbia House TAGS Series tapes for sell, if anybody
would be interested in it. The Tape I have available is from the first
series, and is titled "The Best of Gomer." It contains the episodes "Gomer
the House Guest", "A Date for Gomer", "Citizen's Arrest", and "Andy Saves
Gomer." It is brand new and still shrink wrapped. I had already purchased
a copy of this tape from a list member and then I later signed up for the
TAGS series, so I ended up with an extra. I thought I'd offer it to the
WBMUTBB members before I place it on eBay or some place like that. If
you're interested e-mail me, It'd be a great way for somebody who has been
thinking about signing up for the Columbia House series to see exactly how
good these tapes look!
Thanks,
Chad Palmer
