"I'll be danged" may be the strongest language *we* ever heard from Mayberry.
But does anyone remember why Andy didn't want the preacher on the bowling
team? Because "sometimes we let words slip" or something like that.
Apparently when *we* weren't around they let some four-lettered things fly!

Subject: Successful Mayberry Folks

Got to thinking the other day about all the successful people that came out
of the little town of Mayberry. There was Flip Conroy a professional
football player, there was a congressman who returned to Mayberry to retire,
there was a movie star Tina Andrews (Irene), there was Jim Lindsey who made
it big in music, then Helen published a book, Aunt Bee had her own cooking
show on tv, a story was published about Andy and Barney, a movie was made
about Andy, Aunt Bee appeared on a quiz show in Hollywood and won lots of
prizes, an official government Russian summit was held in Mayberry, the T men
selected Mayberry as a bogus route for a gold shipment, and a movie was made
about Mayberry in a very early episode. Howard appeared on a talent show. And
we can't forget that Keevey Hazelton the famous singer came to Mayberry and
Aunt Bee and Clara wrote a song that he sung, and in the early days Andy and
the boys recorded a record of folk music. Sure was a lot of success for a
sleepy little town.

<<<.One of the things that never changed no matter how hot it might have
gotten
outside is their uniform always had long sleeves. They never had a winter
uniform and a summer uniform like most Police Departments have.>>>

My thoughts on this. Due to the filming during the fall/winter maybe it was
colder in California and they did have lots of exterior shots. When I
worked in Public Access cable tv I remember they always kept the studios
ice cold too.

Maybe I am nuts.

Subject: shirt sleeves

hey to all, just wanted to elaborate on andy's shirt sleeves. i also grew
up about seven miles from a little one horse town where everybody trusted
everybody. our doors were always unlocked and open to anyone who needed help.
my daddy believed in helping his neighbors. we had dirt roads and we lived
close enough to the church to walk to services,(mama played piano for us). had
all day singings and dinner on the ground(remember those). my daddy lived to
be 83 years old but i have never seen him in a short sleeve shirt. he would
roll his sleeves up to his elbows and wash his hands and arms at meal time,
then pull them back down. but he was very modest. maybe that was the way andy
was, too. what do you think? bec from texas. don't just stand there. give me
the car keys!

I believe if I remember correctly, today is Calvin
Coolidge's birthday.

Happy Birthday Cal. (The bigger they are, the nicer
they are.)

The only two times I can remember Andy wearing short sleeves were in
color episodes - one was when Aunt Bee bought Andy and Opie their
matching 'oufits' for the Hollywood trip and the other was when they
were bowling.

AND

Laura Lee - I know the mystery lady you are talking about. In the
episode where the boys are selling (or trying to sell) the salve -
after the boys leave Tom Jacobs' door she is walking up the sidewalk
of the house next door and they chased her into her house. She and
Tom also appear as a couple occasionally - maybe she was his real
life wife!?! She also appeared in several of the color episodes -
in one I believe she was a manicurist. (not THE manicurist, just a
manicurist)

- -Charlie (looking for the poultry shears)

Miss Poovey,

Thank you for that most excellent Independence Day card!

Thank you God, for the Constitution we have which grants us the freedom to
pursue happiness. Our Thanks for those who fought and shed blood to gain
those freedoms, and those who followed who maintain them. While we await
Your Heaven, we can have a tiny piece of it here on Earth with our good
friends and neighbors who display Godly virtue, hospitality, and "doing unto
others" - which includes the good folks of our Mayberry community.

Gonna go put on the John Phillip Souza tape and march the children around the
house. The flag is up, the BBQ awaits, and life is good!

It sure is great to see so many new folks here in our little corner of
Mayberry these days, expecially a few from my part of town.....Florida, with
a couple close to me. I hope y'all enjoy this digest and the friendships
made from TAGS as much as Martha and I do. We have made some lifelong
friends through TAGS that we value more than I can say. Y'all are a great
bunch of folks, and we love you all.

I was struck by the info line on our diital cable last night when the
episode about Opie torn between football and the piano. It said the coach
who taught him and his playmates was played by -- Rockne Tarkington. What
a name!

For you non-FB fans, Knute Rockne was the legendary Notre Dame coach and
Fran Tarkington was the Hall of Fame quarterback for the Vikings and the
Giants. Was that really the actor's name, or was someone pulling my leg?

Tom in Montana

PS:

There was a man named Fife
He wasn't the sharpest knife
But Mayberry needed him
For women he respected a whim
But he did cause some strife

Legally, he was Andrew
Decent through and through
He was devoted to Mayberry
Opie he loved very, very
Our Andy! Just true blue

I'm a Mayberry fan
I love "Call the man!"
It's blissful comedy
Fills me with glee
Gloom it will ban

Sci-Fi ran a Twilight Zone marathon yesterday, so it was a good chance to
pick up some alumni. I was particularly excited about spotting ol' Asa in
an episode.
