I meant to mention that the Twilight Zone marathon had our own Jim Lindsey
(James Best) tangling with a witch, but it all turned out all right. Seems
she put a spell on his electric guitar that would allow it to be played
without being plugged in. I guess that explains that!

OK, these have been going on for a week or more and
I'm not pickin' on Tom or anybody and I appreciate the
enthusiasm, but I keep cringing every time I read these
limericks which aren't limericks at all.
Not only do Limericks need the A-A-B-B-A rhyme scheme, they
have...oh heck fire, here's a clip from the Learn A Month on
Limericks that Barney loaned me - read up.
======================================================
"Purists might say that limericks are only limericks when
they are cleverly obscene, but many fine limericks have been
produced which could be read to six-year-old children. The
rhythm requires no fixed number of syllables; instead, each
line must contain a precise number of beats, or heavily
accented syllables, in the following pattern (which includes
the rhyme scheme):
3 beats (A) 3 beats (A) 2 beats (B) 2 beats (B) 3 beats (A)
Syllables carrying the beat are in caps in the first
example.
There WAS a young LAdy named WYLDE
Who KEPT herself QUITE undeFILED
By THINKing of JESus,
ConTAGious disEASEs,
And the BOTHer of HAVing a CHILD.
A rare old bird is the pelican;
His bill holds more than his bellican.
He can take in his beak
Enough food for a week.
I'm darned if I know how the helican.

that really the actor's name, or was someone pulling my leg?

Yes, that is his real name all right.
Most of you know that Oprah Winfrey is a big fan of TAGS. About three of
four years ago, she made some comment about how there were no blacks in
Mayberry, and someone wrote to her and reminded her about Rockne Tarkington
(I don't remember who wrote her - perhaps it was someone in this chapter?)
Anyway, she tracked down Mr. Tarkington, and a few days later, he appeared
as a guest on her show.
Of course there WERE other African-Americans on TAGS, but Flip Conroy was
the only character with a speaking part.

What an interesting subject ---->>Got to thinking the other day about all
the successful people that came out of the little town of Mayberry.<<
How about Leonard Blush--Wasn't he from Mayberry? I know that Miss Poultice
trained him. And then there was Nathan Tibbs, Seth Taylor, and all those
Colonels (Edwards, Lawson, Pyle) in the Battle of Mayberry and War veterans
like the Milo boys. .
Shirt Sleeves--Andy and Barney never dressed down, but they did have uniform
accessories such as those brown jackets and the rain slicker Barney wore
when he gave Ernest T his uniform.
Bad words--As far I bad words in Mayberry go, there is also that one
slippery word that slipped out of Rafe Hollister (or was he Ben the
moonshiner then) and didn't get edited.
Also in Citizen's Arrest Barney called Gomer a boob. Gomer thought that was
pretty offensive. Probably the most hurtful thing was when everyone in town
was callin Henry a jinx. Jubal Foster was called a miserable old crank, but
he called Opie a Brat....and don't forget Beasto Mareesto, she couldn't have
been too pleased.
There was a man named Parnell
His wallet just came out and fell
Opie thought is was nifty
When he found the whole Fifty
but his honesty sure made things swell.
There once was a man named Henry Bennett
When things went bad, on Henry they'd pin-it
He felt jinxed and so down
That he planned leave town
Until they fixed a contest so Henry would win it
There was a Mayberry mayor named Stoner
Of Andy's prize fish pole he became owner
He cared mostly about votes
and sometimes loaded goats
but to Andy he was the number one groaner
Sorry, I still got this rhymin' compelsion. I'm going to go see a
doctor-----Dr. Seuss.
Have a great week...I'll be off the air for a few weeks. Me and Virg will
send ya a post card

To Aunt Bee in California, thanks for a lovely Independence Day greeting!
Now I think everybody would enjoy hearing of your upcoming move too!
Meanwhile, I spotted Helen in Bonanza recently; she was a demure young
lady traveling with her father and had eyes for Adam in the couple
minutes we watched.

TAGS Fans,
There's a new TAGS-related comic strip on my website as of July 5,
2001. To see it (and other TAGS-themed strips) go to
http://www.burtcottage.com/Sams_Place/mayberry1.html
And yes, I realized too close to my deadline that the patch is on the
wrong shoulder of the uniform.
Also, had a TAGS sighting last night. Clint Howard, aka Leon, was
playing a serial killer on "Seinfeld".

Hi everyone,
Have to tell you a quick story about my kitty
who was born in my homestate of North Carolina.
We had a tornado about four miles from our house
today and she ran under the bed before I could
get her down to the basement....the only way
I could get her out is to whistle the theme from
the "Andy Griffith Show"..you can whistle any
other tune to her and she won't budge but if you
do "Andy" she comes right to you purring....has
done this since she was born....the North Carolina
genes don't stray far!
Thanks for such a good board,
Sherry :o)
