I've always enjoyed the tender scenes between Andy and Opie. Those moments
always touch the father instincts in all of us. But I got to thinking the
other night, regardless of the scene, I don't ever remember Andy giving Opie
even a little peck on the cheek.

I've got a little grandson and I'm all the time doing what we call in the
South "stealin' sugar."

OK, what might be some reasons for folks being a little ornery here in the
digest?

1. Got a haircut at Floyd's and they've got them little hairs down the back
of their neck.
2. Got a brand new jar of Aunt Bee's pickles.
3. Had Gomer as a houseguest for the past 2 weeks.
4. Have a car in their courthouse.
5. Can't get their paw to raise their allowance to 25c a week.
6. Found out their new uniform didn't attract their dear Romeena.
7. Caught their boyfriends in the courthouse with a couple of fun girls.
8. Just got punched in the nose by Mr. Foley.

Any more, anybody?

What about Seinfeld, Drew Carey, even Ellen
Degenerate? Donna Reed, ooh, la, la, Ozzy and
Harriet, Bob Newhart, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Chris
Isaak, Chris Rock, Bette Midler. Variety shows are no
longer with us, (thank goodness) like Steve Allen,
Donny & Marie, Andy williams, Joey Bishop, Carol
Burnett, Perry Como. Now it's time to eradicate the
Oprahs, Jerry Springer's, Rikki Lake's, etc.

Hey, I understand and agree with Charlie. We're waiting for a return to the
"kinder, gentler Mayberry" that Aunt Bee of Modesto spoke of a few weeks
back. Perhaps we've all had a couple too many kerosene cucumbers this
summer! Lotsa luck to you and yers . . . . Larry

        Time for a membership survey:

``Man in a Hurry'' is widely regarded as the single episode that
best captures the spirit of Mayberry.

So what, in the view of our members, is the second-best episode that
best captures what our favorite town is all about?

        Nominations please!

I just got to thinking about how natural all the folks seemed on this
wonderful show. One of my favorite scenes was Gomer getting ready for his big
date with Mary Grace. I have to laugh when I think of those socks, and his
hoping they wouldn't be too "porous" so that the hairs on his legs would poke
through. Now, that's some kind of writing!

I've noticed for the first time this year that my mom is wearing longer
sleeve shirts in the summer. When I asked her if she's hot in those long
sleeves, she says that it's cool on account of the shirts are 100%
cotton. I just don't buy that. I think she just getting a little older &
is not as hot natured as she was before. She's 39 years old for the 18th
year in a row, but what ever you do, don't tell her know I let on to her
age!

Also, here in NC I've noticed that a lot of the Hispanic population
wears long sleeve shirts & jeans in the summer, wonder if they know
something about keeping cool that I don't know? Or perhaps some people
are just more cooler than others therefore they don't get as warm. I
myself am one 'Hot Mama' (as my 7 year old puts it) and I can't stand to
get too hot. I just get plain ole grouchy!

Lots of luck to you and yours!

Did Mayberry have a cab company? I wouldn't think the town would be big enough
for that.

While we're on the subject, exactly how many people lived in Mayberry? I once
heard Howard Sprague say the population was 1,800. Is that the general
consensus here?

In the esipode about the motherless birds,Opie was wondering how they could
manage, would he do a good job. Andy said to Opie something like you were
very young, when you lost your ma, and you turned out right. I never
remember, them naming Andy's late wife or referring to her. Thanks for all
the nice TAGS messages.

Hey Gang,

I was watching the episode titled 'Suppose Andy Gets Sick' the other night
and noticed another couple of those Mayberry contradictions. First off, I
don't agree with the title of the show because Andy is actually sick and has
to take off work for a few days but anyway, the doctor that comes to see Andy
at the office is an older doctor like the one who retires and is replaced by
the 'New Doctor in Town' in the earlier episode by the same name. What
happened to him? Did he get run off and the old doc come out of retirement
or what?! The other slip up is that Andy says he has never been sick while
he's been sheriff but I seem to remember a black and white episode where he
was actually sick or am I daydreaming...someone help me out! 'Til next
time...

Subject: Keep things Positive.....

Folks,

There's been WAY too much talk about not liking this or that. Let's try to
keep things here in our little corner of Mayberry as positive as possible.
Below is "The Rules" for our little corner of Mayberry and many of you have
seen them before.....but they're always good for a reminder and the new folks
haven't seen 'em. -- Allan
- ---------------------

I feel like with the number of new members we've gotten lately that it's time
to restate "The Rules" for everybody. You old-timers might want to read
through this just to refresh your memories and I think it's good for all of
us to try and remember these tried and true rules.---- Allan

From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hey Everybody,

Boy, things have really been growing here in out little corner of Mayberry!!
Because of that I think it's time to remind everyone what WBMUTBB is all
about:

We all know what Mayberry is about but do we realize why it is that we all
visit there everyday? I know that the characters are great but more than
that, they're friends. We "know" these people and it's just a joy to visit
them every chance we get to watch them as they work their way through getting
locked in a cell because the door "clangs shut" or any of the other wonderful
situations they face. Things always work out in a wonderful way leaving a
smile on our faces.

Mayberry is an escape from the day-to-day trials we all face. A short trip
to a place where every body cares about one another and where we can forget,
for a while, the fact that "real life" isn't as much like that as we'd like.

I started WBMUTBB back in 1990, along with several other good folks, and
since then I've tried to make it as much like a "corner of Mayberry" as
possible. I wanted this place to be somewhere folks could go and forget
about the outside world and relax by reading about Andy, Barney, Opie, Aunt
Bee, and the rest of our Mayberry family.

To try and make that happen I've required everyone who wanted to join to tell
us a little about themselves so we could get to know them just a little bit.
After all, in Mayberry everyone knew everybody else and how can we have a
community without having at least some idea about our neighbors?

I've also had a couple of rules here and I try to enforce them.

Of course Rule #1 is...you guessed it...Obey all rules.

Rule #2 is this: Talk about the things you like about Mayberry..not things
you don't like.

I know some folks forget this second rule sometimes and they don't really
understand WHY I think Rule #2 is important so let me just give you an
example. Let's say I were to say, "Boy, I really hate Barney. I mean, look
how stupid he is and poor Andy has to put up with him." If I said that
(and meant it) what are the first things that happen to you?

First you'd feel like, "Man, that guys a jerk!" Then you'd get aggravated at
this guy talking about your Favorite character (and friend), Barney Fife.
Even if Barney's not your very favorite character, you'd likely be upset
about this guy talking about your neighbor.

I've never heard anyone say anything like that about Barn but I have about
other characters and folks forget that just because they don't like a
particular character doesn't mean that character isn't someone else's
favorite. You see, if I talk about your favorite character saying negative
things about 'em it takes your fun away.

I think that's enough about Rule #2 and I hope you all understand the rule.
It's not to take away from your fun but to encourage you all to tell us about
what's fun to you and share your good feelings with others.

We have something special here. It's something you don't find often on the
internet. No "flames", no "fighting", no "foul language." We have a place
that children and adults can come and enjoy themselves.

Mayberry is a wonderful place and I'm just glad to be a part of this little
corner of it.

Your Friend and neighbor,

Allan Newsome
