Some folks have been a little on edge lately. To paraphrase Andy, for those
of you who are "sick of us in a kind of friendly hoping we'll understand way"
I have an idea. Pack a sack and go up to the mountains for a couple of days
- - better yet, go to Raleigh and get that corner room at the "Y" and take in
one of them girlie shows. You will join us all refreshed.

Concerning the long sleeves in the summer time, some my folks also use to
wear long sleeves when they were working out in the sun for protection from

I was the Goober who thought Andy's REAL name was Andrew Samuel but was
corrected by Mrs. Mendelbright who oughta know since she's right there "in
it". Somebody help me remember where I saw that Andy's middle name was
Samuel. I'm gonna have to quit visiting those Morrison sisters.

just a little bit of trivia for those of you who enjoy watching these same
shows over and over, as i do-just happened to notice when i was watching
episode of "citizen`s arrest", when gomer called in the false robbery report
to get barney to re-join the police force, after the call came through to the
courthouse, i noticed(for the first time), that when barney comes running
down the road to the service station yelling questions to goober about the
"robbery", that he is running from the opposite direction of where town
is(where he at when the phone call comes through)-everyone always comes from
the opposite direction when they are coming to the filling station, so you
know that is the direction town is, but ol` barn must have took the long way
around! no big thing, i know-just one of those interesting little tid-bits
that you want to share with fellow mayberrians, and what makes reading this
newsletter so much fun! Goober says hey!

Well it didn't seem to slow down Hugh Beaumont and Jerry Mathers on "Leave It
to Beaver."

On the subject of "Man in a Hurry": yeah, he was a jerk when his Continental
broke down, but by the end of the episode he had come full circle, with a
very touching moment, falling asleep with a peeled apple in his hand...

I have seen the kinescopes, the routines with Don are a hoot. One of my
favorite MOS routines identified him as "K.B. Anderson," a really nervious
man. Seems the K.B. stood for "Ka-BOOM!" (He was a munitions expert.)
Another had him as a TV weatherman thrown onto the air with no experience and
a blank map. ("Now let's take a look at our map...well, there she is, the
good ol' U S of A!")

One other notable thing about Steve Allen's show: Andy Griffith got a big
break there, doing a couple of his early routines...

I am sending in a repeat question that never got answered, hoping that some
of the newcomers to Mayberry may have been wearing their thinking buckets,
and just might be able to help me out on this one.-does anybody remember an
episode explaning what happened to Warren-i dont even remember exactly when
it was he left, just that some of the shows have him, and some dont-did the
show ever tell where he was going, and why, or was he just quietly written
out of the show, never to be mentioned again-just curious-much obliged to ye!

Was watching the Mayberry RFD episode where a consultant came to work with
Sam regarding a study about Mayberry. Can't help but comment on the make up
of the city council. First there is Sam as head of the council. Always
wondered how he was elected as the head of the town council as council
members must live within the city limits of the town, and being a farmer, he
most likely lived outside the city limits. Then the rest of the council
members were Sam's best friends, Goob, Emmett, and Howard. I do not think
Goob would be eligible for council membership as he is acting Sheriff or part
time deputy which would consititue a definite conflict of interest. Then
Howard already holds an elected position of County Clerk. Throw in Sam's
girlfriend Millie and his Cousin Alice, and it certainly makes an interesting
council. Then again, I imagine the good folks of Mayberry know that these
people, being the honest citizens that they are, would never use their
friendships and close relationships for any underhanded politics. Also at
one of the meetins, Emmett made a comment about the reason why he voted for
Sam, when actually, he was the one who ran against Sam. Maybe that was the
reason he lost - he voted for his opponent. Only in Mayberry would people be
so kind as to do that.

I know you old-timers have heard me say this before so I apologize for
the repeat but my favorite episode showing true Mayberry spirit is "Only
a Rose" in which Clara sacrifices her flower show prize to Aunt Bee. It
makes me cry every time I see it!

I wouldn't necessarily say the whole episode, but the scene
that sticks out in my mind is the latter part of Barney's
testimony in "Andy on Trial" (after the "bunch of yeses")
where Barney tells what Andy means to the town of Mayberry.
Also, a very underrated episode (probably because it's in
color) is "Opie's Job" where Opie intentionally gets himself
fired after he finds out that the other kid seeking the job
needs the money for his family, and Andy tells him at the
end that he's a man.

1. They just got replaced by Gomer in the choir.
2. Everybody forgot their five year anniversary.
3. They just tried to arrest the bank president for bank robbery.
4. Andy just asked the town jinx to go fishing with them.
5. They just got placed under citizen's arrest.
6. They just bought a really bad fur for Thelma Lou.
7. Opie is ruining their plans to go to the duck pond.

Surprise! Joanna Moore is Tatum O'Neal's mother!

Also, Moore co-starred with Elvis in "Follow That Dream" in 1962. If I
remember correctly, she played a social worker who was first attracted to
Elvis, but turned on him later in the movie. Joanna was a brunette in the film
-- she was blonde on the Andy Show -- and someone in Elvis' "Memphis Mafia"
says Elvis didn't have much of a relationship with Joanna because Joanna was
strange and unstable off-camera.

Sadly, Joanna passed away in 1997. Try this link for more info:

About kissin' on the show...

I do remember Opie saying to Ange, "Paw, is it OK if I don't kiss you in
front of company?" when the Darlings were at the house. They then just
shook hands on their deal.

I think another good episode to start folks out on is "Barney's First Car."
The exchange between Ange and Barn about the septic tank is one of my
all-time favorites. The expressions on both their faces makes me lose it
every time...

I guess I'm grumpy 'cause it's HOT here--92!

Subject: Second Ep

I believe I'd have to agree that "Sermon for Today"
would have to be the second episode to get people
goin' on TAGS.

It shows how we react to life with SPEED, SPEED,
SPEED, and need to slow down. It also shows what
happens when you work too hard to take it easy. It's
similar to "Man in a Hurry". Remember when Mr.
Tucker was on the porch all relaxed and all, then
suddenly Gomer comes up and tells him about his car.
He gets all keyed up. That's the way everyone got
after the sermon.

So, in closing, remember

Slow down

Take your time

WHAT'S YOUR HURRY?
