Thank you, Mr. Newsome.
You have once again handled a situation in a gracious and diplomatic
manner and given everyone a venue in which to air their opinions.

Oh, now you've gone and sent my memory in reverse! I drove a VW Beetle
in college, around ''76 - ''77 which was a mid- to late- 60's model called an
'Automatic Stickshift', and this is exactly how it worked. I impressed at
least
one young man on how smoothly I shifted gears (for a girl!) until he learned
there was no clutch involved! LOL!

Oh, yippie!
More 'facts' to add to my personal Mayberry history. This is great because it
fits with a previous discussion and conclusions some of us came up with as
to where Aunt Bee was between raising Andy and raising Opie.

Hey everybody. I was watching the episode of Opie's Charity the other day
and in the opening seen where Opie and Andy are playing catch, right behind
Opie over his right shoulder in the distance there are 2 hugh arched doors
and people are walking through and it's not going into a business, but
rather you see more buildings in the background through the doors. By any
chance is this the entrance to the set of the show or what? I hadn't
noticed them until the other day. Any info whould be great. Thanks, Kevin

"Through my many visits to Mayberry Days, I've learned this from observing the
locals in Mt. Airy, and elsewhere in the Carolinas :
It's perfectly fine to gossip about your neighbors as long as you bless their
heart when your through.....Al Becker, Norfolk Va"
You are quiet correct in your observations, Al, however, this blessing
requirement of your neighbors and friends after you are done gossiping about
them, is not limited to the fine state of North Carolina-in fact, this is a
requirement for anywhere in the South-having been born and bred in the South,
i have always followed this requirement to the "T"-"He`s as ugly as homemade
sin-bless his heart". But as anyone living in the South will be quick to tell
you, we dont repeat gossip-so you better be sure and listen close the first
time!(another requirement of the South)
Mrs. Mendlebright from alabama, where"Throwing food
is a sin, Mr. Bass!"
No offense intended to anyone living or dead in any southern state-just some
southern humor(but true!)

Howdy!
I found myself thinking of Mayberry this weekend, as the town I live in is
celebrating it's 150 year birthday. That is plenty old for this part of
the country! We had music and bands playing in the bandstand in our
central park, and a nice parade, etc... It was very "small-townish" and I
loved every minute of it! Because of that Mayberry reminder, I just had to
write a short note to WBMUTBB!
My garden is producing very well this year (of course, that is a good
thing!). One item that I have plenty of is cucumbers.....which of course
brings up a question: can anyone send me a good recipe for GOOD pickles
(dill and sweet)? Someone from WBMUTBB was kind enough to send me a recipe
a few years ago, but unfortunately a computer crash caused me to loose many
files, including that recipe! I would appreciate any help you can give.
And, no kerosene cucumbers PLEASE!! (Does anyone have a good recipe for
good salsa too, by chance? I also seem to be up to my eyes in tomatoes).
This will be my first attempt of making pickles. I suppose if the pickles
don't turn out, I can give them out as gifts to motorists at the edge of
town!!
By the way, I am looking forward to the "Inside TV Land" special this
Friday, as it will feature TAGS. Even if I've already seen most of the
footage by now, it is always fun to hear and see things again! (isn't that
alot like watching a TAGS re-run for the umteenth time, and enjoying it as
though it was the first time you have ever seen it?)!
"Thanks, and Happy Motoring!"

Subject: Mayberry Quote Book
You know what I would like this e-chpater of TAGSRWC to do? I'd like us to
produce a book of Mayberry quotes. We all quote TAGS here on the Digest,
and often we ask each other to post our favorite quotes, etc., etc. Quotes
abound in or on all the Mayberry books and items that have been produced.
But I don't believe there's a "Quote Book" where all quoteable quotes are
listed. Quotes could be listed by episode, but then be cross-referenced by
topic or key word(s). I don't envision actually having a Quote Book
formally published, but with today's computer equipment, a good
desktop-published version shouldn't be hard to do. It would be a
considerable project, as all episodes would have to be watched and quotes
carefully recorded. But if we took this on as a WBMUTBB project, many
people could volunteer to watch one or two episodes and email their list of
quotes to the person who would collect them, make editing decisions, and
then work on categorizing them. We could have two editions: (1) The Black
& White Episodes and (2) The Color episodes.
So what do you think of my idea? Would you be willing to do some of the
"quote hunting?" For the next few days please reply to this Digest instead
of me personally. I think it's important that WBMUTBB members are aware of
the response to this idea (or lack of it) before we go to private emails.
We've never had a chapter project before. Shame on us! We hear about the
neat stuff that goes on in other chapters around the country, and here we
sit with this huge membership and with all this talent shooting out the ends
of our keyboards. This is something we could do. Our "product" would be
liked by the vast majority of our membership and could be acquired for next
to nothing. Even if this project went no further than our own chapter, it
would still be worth the effort. On the other hand, what lover of TAGS
wouldn't want an extrememly inexpensive Quote Book? TAGSRWC members in all
those chapters across the country who don't belong to WBMUTBB would probably
be interested too. WE COULD DO THIS. Do you want to?

Laura Lee Hobbs here with a special hello to all you beautifully preserved
people of Mayberry land.
Now, we all know that our beloved Mayberry never really existed, just like
its characters were part of a writer's imagination, no matter how much we
have grown to love them. And I suppose most small towns and
rural areas probably do share characteristics with Mayberry and we can all
identify we at least a few of the characters on the show, at least to a
certain extent.
But my question today is do you think that a regular watching of Andy
makes you a kinder, more thoughtful person? Perhaps it makes you a person
more readily to see the humor in a situation that under other
circumstances would be rather stressful. I know, many times I would be
tired and living on my last nerve, when I would think of a quote from
TAGS and it would seem to make things a little easier to bear.
Maybe it reminds you to be gracious. Remember when Goober had the perfect
opportunity to "get back" at his bragging friend when Andy
found out the friend wasn't nearly as successful as he claimed, but Goober
didn't want to embarrass the man? Andy reminded Goober he didn't
need to worry about being a great man; he already was. A class act. And
something we can all learn from.
And the Mary Grace/Gomer episode. I've already written about this gem
of a show so I won't repeat myself, but it has it all: consideration for
others, giving people the benefit of the doubt, and seeing the real beauty
in a person. Oh, I love this episode! I fall in-love with Gomer
(sorry, Miss Poovey, but I can't help it) every time I see it.
There are too many other examples, but you know what I'm getting at.
Andy in and of itself won't turn an ax murder into a sweet person. But
it just may soften the edges for the rest of us who, after all, are doing
the best we can, most of the time anyway.
Laura Lee Hobbs, clerk and gold truck gal (nice, real nice)
Lydia & me like nothing better that sitting around enjoying a nice, ordinary
conversation 'cause Lydia hates to chit-chat. Any takers?

Subject: Re:Small Town Life
I would just like to say that I wouldn't trade my early life in a small
town for anything. I can still remember when I was a child (1981) going
down to Mr. Yawn's barber shop and getting an honest haircut in a barber
chair that had a leather strop for sharpening up razors for shaves. And the
barber, Mr. Yawn, looked EXACTLY like Floyd sans moustache. Then
afterward, I would go down to Rogers Drug Store and get an ice-cold bottle
(not can) of Co-cola.
Along the way, I would see the town "character", The Phantom, walking down
the street muttering to himself in his high water britches.
Now if that ain't living I don't know what is. Thank God there is at least
ONE show, TAGS, that celebrates the wonder of small town life.

In Opie's Charity, Tom Silby gets upset when Andy tells him that the mayor
and all the aldermen were at his funeral. Remember, Tom can't stand Sam
Peabody. Anyway, shortly thereafter we have Ellie running for council. All
the other times we have elections or serious government meeting, council is
mentioned. Wonder where the aldermen went?
