My favorite female? A woman light years ahead of her time, Ellie Walker. Her
decision to run for the Mayberry City Council (and I think she won, according
to the song Andy sang in the epilogue) was just one milestone; the fact that
she even became a pharmacist at all was groundbreaking in itself. There
weren't many female pharmacists in the south back then. On the other hand, she
could be quite the sex kitten too, as we found out in that classic, hilarious
moment in which she vamps Barney (as part of an elaborate joke). I could see
where she might not have had the best chemistry in the world with Andy, but she
was still a very special woman that Mayberry will not likely forget, even after
just the one season...

I think I'm dreaming on this one but was there ever an alternate version of
the theme to Mayberry RFD? I was young but I thought I remembered a song
with a male singer that went "Mayberry, Mayberry we ought to get together in
Mayberry R.F.D."
Speaking of Mayberry RFD does anyone have the Ken Berry RFD album? It's
great to listen to.

Regarding Helen, excuse me, Miss Crump making all those mistakes on Opie' s
report card, I think the explanation is quite simple. She made the mistakes
because it was before they had that BLAME GRADING MANUAL. Maybe if Andy
would have remembered that little mixup, he would not have been so upset with
Frank, the smartest man I have ever known.

Honestly, I also have been upset by the dramatic changes in people's
attitudes and apparent lack of real concern for others appearing in recent
years in both small and large towns.

When Andy and I were growing up in Mount Airy there were some things we
could count on:
        1. All adults we interacted with would either be helpful to us or
automatically pleasantly
let us know where were were out of line.
        2. All children from 5/6 years old were free to wander all over
town without concern for anyone "bothering"
us. In fact, as another small town resident reminded me, if children needed
to use what the English call the "necessary facilities," in any section of
in Mount Airy, we would knock on the door and ask permission to "use the
bathroom" and we would be admitted without question.
        3. We would be subject to the same "teasing" by other children
that, unfortunately, has existed for time immemorial, but we survived in
spite of it!
        4. That all adults in the town would praise us for what we did
that was "good" and call us
down for anything we did that did not "meet local standards."
        5. Although the hometown that Andy and I shared, Mount Airy, N.
C., has changed somewhat with the times, I am encouraged by the following:
Several years ago, when my daughter and her husband visited Mount
Airy and were eating in the "Snappy Lunch," she asked for a telephone book
and explained that her mother had grown up in Mount Airy and she was trying
to find some cousins who still lived there. Upon hearing that information,
Charles McDowell, owner of the Snappy Lunch, refused to let them pay for
their meals. "You're homefolks - we don't need your money - we're just
glad to have you here!"

Check out my website on August 15th - will have copy of book cover and
other info.

Folks,

I think it's time to move on from the Small town discussion...Please. If you
would like to continue the discussion, head over to the WBMUTBB Chapter
Golden Door to Good Fellowship.
   http://www.tagsrwc.com/wbmutbb/goldendoor/page1.html

Please folks....this is no longer about Mayberry but about small towns. This
list is for having fun talking about Mayberry and related issues. I think
there's been enough information shared about small towns now so
PLEASE...let's move along.

"although how she could afford such a nice
house
and pretty clothes on a teacher's salary always confused me."
I have always wandered about all the houses in Mayberry. It
just seems that like Helen, or like families that were small-it made no
difference, they all lived in the same size house for the most part-where
there no apartments or trailers or small houses during that time? Maybe it a
geographical thing, not sure-as I have stated before on here, I am a child of
the sixties, but I just dont remember-I`m talking very small child! Also, I
have wandered about Helen in that she always got to be Opie`s teacher, no
matter what grade he was in-now, I know teachers do swap around some from
time-to-time, but not everyyear, and not to the exact grade your boyfriend`s
son is on(sheriff`s son or not!-),also, I thinnk it was nice how she softened
over the years!-remember when she first come, how spinster-looking she
was-throught the years, she looked younger to me, instead of aging.
Finally, what episode is hilda mae on?--dont remember her, either-seems
like I need to get my thinking bucket back out!
Best of Luck to you and yours!

categorizing, typing, editing, or just quote hunting! Good idea! :) Lisa

Subject: Quote book

I think the quote book is a good idea. Unfortunately, I do not
have much time to invest in the project so I can't volunteer to be the
one who puts it all together. However, I will volunteer to watch
a few episodes and write down quotes. I have all of the episodes on
tape.

As for Howard McNear and his stroke, I don't know exactly when it happened,
but I do know that it was prior to episode 144 "Goober Takes a Car Apart".
During that episode, if you watch closely, it is quite obvious that one arm is
limp. Also, he is only shown sitting, never standing or walking, and at
one point one of the other actors actually turns the swivel chair he is sitting
in around for him. It happens so fast, it is easy to miss unless you are
looking for it, but it is a definite sign that there is a problem that prevents
him from turning in the chair on his own. Stroke or no stroke, Howard
McNear was always a very talented actor and he was excellent at playing the
part
of Floyd.

Remember in the episode when Ellie ran for town
council and Otis was locked up? He'd used a leg o
lamb to hit his mother-in-law in the mouth,by accident
of course..............and Barney said Hilda Mae got
him to sign Ellie's petition because "she has ways".

Exactilioso! The full title is "By the Beautiful Blue Danube," but it is
more commonly known by the shorter name. There were two Johann Strausses,
father and son. This piece was written by Johann Strauss II (not Junior -
but let's not go through THAT again!)

Ok, who can answer parts 2 and 3? Name the tunes that are heard in the
following situations:

2. When Ernest T. Bass smashes a vase on the head of the man dancing with
Romeena (Ramona)

Hints: This same tune invokes a similar reaction in "Convicts at Large."
Big Maude remarks, "Naomi and her husband -- that was their song" (perhaps
Naomi was once married to Ernest T. Bass?!) Additionally, in a third
episode (which also features dancing), Floyd suggests that this is a good
dance tune.

3. When Barney dances a tango with Big Maude

Hints: Goober's favorite vegetable / a club Barney joined in high school

Subject: Question

Hey everyone,

This question may have been posted before, but I was wondering of how many
exampels of episodes that referenced previouse episodes, (for example in the
episode with the chain letter, I think Andy makes a reference to the Magic
Lamp episode.)

Anyway, does anyone have any other examples?
