Subject: A Dreamy Mayberry Wedding

Oh, how I wish I could give my daughter a Mayberry wedding!

There we'd be at the All Souls Church with the Rev. Tucker officiating the
lovely ceremony. He could talk up a storm, but I'd rather he leave the
subject of sin alone. Somehow weddings and sin don't seem to go together
even though you can never talk enough about sin.

The Dillards would provide the music with Charlene singing that most
beautiful, "There is a Time for Us to Wonder." And there wouldn't be
a dry eye in the church.

As the loving couple left the church, Ernest T. would throw a few rocks
to wish them well. (They would be little pebbles 'cause he wouldn't want to
split their heads causing them to require the service of a taxidermist the
way he did to his beloved Hogget--"Pretty name,"
"Yeah, yeah, it's French, you know."

Who else but Aunt Bee and Miss Clara and all the other wonderful church
ladies would furnish the decorations/food for a fabulous reception? Again,
the Dillards would play their joyful music and we would all have
a ball.

People spend so much money and they do have a beautiful wedding. But
I ask you, "Don't you think the Mayberry wedding I just described would
also be wonderful?"

Lydia: "I hate weddings. I don't mind seeing people married and I don't
mind seeing people with spouses. But I hate weddings." (In case you're
wondering, this is not a TAGS' quote)

Subject: Likable Male Character

Other than the main characters, I suppose a really likable character for
me would be Howard.

Oh, come on now, he really is ok. He's dependable. He's good to his mother,
and let's face it, most of us would have killed that woman--if
not at the very least hurt her a little bit. And he's smart.

Granted you're not likely to have many wild times with Howard, but if you're
looking to settle down with a man who won't cheat on you, who will bring
home a steady income (that story about his gambling problem
was all a lie from that mess of a mother of his), who will be steadfast
and won't leave you when the going gets rough, well then Howard's your
man.

Girls, you could do a lot worse than Howard (and by the looks of those
TV talk shows, you do).

So forget that knight on the white horse nonsense and get yourself a
nice Howard type. You'll learn to love him. I promise!

One of my favorite scenes from "Those Gossipin' Men" is always deleted when
that episode is shown now.

I always laughed when the undertaker comes into the office and seeing Barney
he says, "Why Barney, you're alive." And Barney says he plans to stay that
way. Then the undertaker says he better move his hearse because he has it
backed up to their door.

I miss that scene so much.

I think it must have been Otis that liked them kerosene cucumbers. "Flavored
them a might. It's familiar!"

Hi Everybody,
Got a question for you. What country male duo recorded the song "I Wish
that Life Was Like the Andy Griffith Show". Was it the Belamy Brothers?
I'd like to get a copy of it one of these days as I sure can sympathize
with the sentiment.

I saw an old clip of "Sugarfoot" once where Frances Bavier appeared to be
playing Annie Oakley, and even had a gun pulled on someone! Guess that'll
teach the butcher to cut the fat off her roast next time...

Before tonite's TVLand presentation of
"Alcohol and Old Lace", they set up the program
with a little background, it went a little
something like this.....

" In this show (I forget his real name), plays the
part of Rube Sloan, and then becomes a regular on
the show as Singer/Moonshiner Rafe Hollister...."

Problem: The actor that play's Rafe Hollister was
playing under the name of BEN SEWELL....NOT Rube
Sloan.
They even showed a picture of "Rube Sloan". It ain't
ol' Rafe neither.

TVLand.....if you're going to act smart,
Please get the facts straight.

If you will look just a little closer, the window says "Snack Bar",
instead of Chance Bar.

Subject: Pickle recipe

I realized when reading my posting of the dill pickle recipe that I neglected
to mention something that you might not know if you have not made pickles
before. When you pack the jars with the cukes and dill, etc., you may cut the
cukes lengthwise or crosswise, or, if your cukes are small enough, you may
leave them whole. One more tip-these are SO good to eat with cheese and
saltine crackers.
I think that this recipe would rival even Clara Edward's recipe when she went
"wild with allspice"!
The pickle episode is one of my favorites that I watch over and over. I also
love the one when Barney and Andy save the Scobys from eviction from their
house by Ben Weaver. I use this episode in my classroom to help teach caring
and friendship-and so much more. TAGS had wonderful writers and actors who
were able to teach us much. In my opinion, it is the most wonderful series
that has ever been on television. It should be required watching for the
world! Maybe we would have fewer conflicts and violence!
Thank you for this great site! Haven't been a member long, but I sure am
enjoying it.

>>>I'm not sure of the name (help me out here Paul,) but there's another
episode that uses a stand-in for Floyd. As Andy and Opie walk past the shop,
"Floyd" turns toward the window and you can see it's not Howard
McNear
>>>

After Howard McNear's stroke, a double for Floyd was used in several
episodes, since he was no longer able to stand without assistance. His last
episode before the stroke was #74 Convicts at Large, at which point he left
the series (he was more or less replaced by Gomer Pyle) and did not return
until episode #119, Andy Saves Gomer. The double was used in long-distance
shots, such as when someone from the sidewalk waved to him through the
window, or in scenes where Floyd was required to drive a car.

Actually, it is very likely that every major cast member had a double (or
stand-in). This is a standard show-biz practice. Examine the photo on page
86 of "The Definitive Andy Griffith Show Reference" and you can see a man on
the left that appears to be Don's double.

I'm with you Barb! I'm principally a homemaker and work outside the home
only part-time cuz I don't want my life to become so hectic I lose that
Mayberry feeling. There is certainly more to life than position and
money and I applaud your message to us. Much obliged.
As for bald men on TAGS, I only remember Otis' cellmate in Mt. Pilot,
whose mother was a nurse. He was on Ozzie and Harriet as their neighbor
Doc and later was the storekeeper in Hooterville (I think). Seemed like
a swell guy!!

Someone has asked about when Howard McNear had his
stroke, and I looked in my Mayberry 101 which mentioned
thathe had already had it and come back to TAGS by
episode #128,Barney's Bloodhound".It went on to tell
of how much everyone on the cast loved him and how
much they enjoyed working with him, also about the
things that they did to help him and make it easier
for him. There was a seat built onto the back of the
barber chair to lend the illusion of Floyd standing
when in reality he was sitting to make it less
exerting for him. Also there was less emphasis put on
his left side since he had less use of it. It also
tells about the "other Floyd",that he just couldn't
get his lines right and wasn't "meshing" with the cast
so he was only on the one episode.Aren't we glad,so we
didn't miss out on enjoying Howard, the "Real Floyd"!
