(I love the final quote...) Dixon (Honolulu-AP) -- Gomer Pyle is being promoted. No kidding. Forthe six years "Gomer Pyle, U-S-M-C" was on the air, Pyle was always a private first class. Tomorrow he's becoming a lance corporal. A real-life Marine Corps commandant is doing the honors. It'll happen at a private ceremony at a Marine base on Oahu. Jim Nabors lives in Honolulu. He jokes "I told the general I don't know if I should accept this. It's just too much power. At this stage of my life, it's almost too much to think about what it could lead to." Nabors is 71. He says the idea of the promotion came up when he met commandant earlier this year. Nabors says the marine "was laughing about it and said, 'You never even made it past the rank of private! We should really do something about this."' And, so they are. A spokesman for the Marines says "even though Gomer wasn't the sharpest knife in the drawer, he maintained all the attributes that a Marine is supposed to have. He was honest, trustworthy and always gave 100 percent." ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 8 Aug 2001 18:24:20 -0500 From: "Matt Coleman" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: Holler Fish - ----- Original Message ----- re: Holler fish > > Looked in Mayberry 101 again and it said that the > writer if that episode got the saying from his > mother......................real one not just a > mother-figure,and it supposedly meant hush up.Seems > Everett Greenbaum's mother grew up in Philadelphia in > a neighborhood with fish vendors > I ain't no boob,Andy he called me a boob. > This line was used in 'The Ghost and Mr. Chicken' and when my wife heard it she laughed real hard! None other than Elenora Poultice aka Maude. I also have to made a comment about the statue. I often thought it might be made of syrofoam or something lightweight, because if you n otice when they do the unveiling, it wiggles just a tad. Would be mighty hard to do if it was marble or some other stone. I saw him recently on the episode where they were solving the mystery of the thievery at Weaver's store, but I'm not sure exactly what other episodes he appeared in. Thanks for your appreciation of little Leon! :) Lisa >>> Mayberry's cutest cowboy appears in 5 episodes: The Jinx, One-Punch Opie, The Bank Job, A Black Day for Mayberry, and The Shoplifters. In his first appearance (The Jinx), he is leaning in the doorway watching the dancers when a man picks him up and carries him out. We don't know who the man is, but he could be Leon's father. Somebody asked about the "Mayberry ISP" a few days back. I can't recommend The MayberryUSA ISP that you may have heard about on the radio because they didn't treat me right at all, so...... We have arranged a special offer from: "True Vine Online: Family Filtered Internet Access" You get a free gift for your first paid month . You can check out the offer as well as subscribe for the first month by going to the following SECURE web site. https://truevine.safepages.com/mayberry-signup.html True Vine is a small company with over 3000 local phone numbers to choose from so hopefully they will have one in your area. You can check for local numbers while you're visiting the web site. Since they are fairly small, I believe you will find them to be very helpful and you will have an easy time actually talking to someone if you need to speak to someone for technical help. The filtered provider that has been advertised on the radio that has a Mayberry related name but in my dealings with that company I have found them to be unresponsive to my requests. Therefore I am unable to recommend MayberryUSA to you and I cannot and do not recommend them as I have not had pleasant dealings with them over the past 6 months. They have not lived up to the contract which I signed with them so I cannot expect them to do better for you. That said....I believe to be True Vine to be truthful and responsive to their customers. Sorry to be kind'a advertising but I just wanted to warn y'all about the MayberryUSA folks. https://truevine.safepages.com/mayberry-signup.html Allan Newsome "The Andy Griffith Show" Rerun Watchers Club - Webmaster http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 08 Aug 2001 22:53:05 -0500 From: "K.D." <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: Andy and fan functions Andy suffers from constant pain in both his feet from Guillane-Barre Syndrome. He has battled it since around 1983. He lost feeling and control of his feet and had be hospitalized and go through therapy to regain the use of his feet and legs. The pain never goes away, but he has learned to manage it. I am sure this is one reason he does not make many personal appearances. Most celebrities understand this, even though sadly some don't. It is all a domino effect. If a celebrity is rude to one person, that person won't like them anymore, that person will tell others, and they won't like them anymore, and so on and so on. While at Universal Studios awhile back, my brother was buying an ice cream cone with his fiancee, and behind them was Steven Spielberg and his son. My brother, being a BIG movie buff, started talking to him, and Mr Spielberg and my brother started conversing a long time about various things while there, and when they'd run into each other later in the day, (Ol' Spielberg had a no-line waiting VIP pass), he'd invite my brother and his fiancee to the front of the lines with them. Let's hope there's more like him than then like (I won't say his name, Al_c B_ldw_n). - -Jr Nope " The richer they are, the nicer they are......' HEY CHUCK ! Susan/San Francisco ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 09 Aug 2001 20:41:37 -0400 From: Greg Painter <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Gomer Pyle Promotion >> The following article was in the 8/9/2001 edition of the Knoxville News-Sentinel: << Gomer Pyle promoted to lance corporal HONOLULU -- Pfc. Gomer Pyle is finally being promoted. The television character played by Jim Nabors on the TV sitcom "Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.," will become a lance corporal today. Gen. James Jones, commandant of the Marine Corps, will honor the character at a private ceremony at Camp H.M. Smith on Oahu. "I told the general I don't know if I should accept this -- it's just too much power," Nabors joked. "At this stage of my life, it's almost too much to think about what it could lead to." The 71-year-old Nabors, who lives in Honolulu, brought the lovable and gullible Pyle into America's living rooms starting in 1964. The hit show ran for five seasons on CBS. Nabors said the idea of the promotion came up when he met Jones earlier this year. Jones "was laughing about it and said, 'You never even made it past the rank of private!'" Nabors said. "He said, 'We should really do something about this.'" Camp Smith officials said the show did a lot to present the Marines in a positive light. "Even though Gomer wasn't the sharpest knife in the drawer, he maintained all the attributes that a Marine is supposed to have," said Marine spokesman Chuck Little. "He was honest, trustworthy and always gave 100 percent." ------------------------------ End of wbmutbb-digest V3 #237 ***************************** ************************************************** ~ Visit our sponsor ~ Weaver's Department Store ~ http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/weavers/ ************************************************** You must send your comments to the Digest from the address you used to join WBMUTBB or your message will not be posted.
