I hope Allan won't mind if I second his recommendation of Truevine Online!
I have used them since the move and they are great. The filtering software
is server based and helps me feel a little more at ease about allowing my
two oldest boys (11 & 8) get on the Internet. I was with another ISP for a
couple of years (think of a big phone company) and they were awful. Also,
I'm getting the highest connect speeds I've ever had.

It coudn't happen to a nicer guy than Jim Nabors. He has always seemed
to me, to be a very modest unasuming person & surely his character was a
great representation of what a marine should be. Better late than never
to receive this recognition to one in my own generation.

Ever notice when Barney is put on the stand to testify against Andy, by the
ego- maniac newspaper publisher, that he does a great imitation of Humfrey
Bogart? I am captivated by that scene everytime. let me tell you,Mr. Jackson!!

Sitcom Director Alan Rafkin Dies
The Associated Press
Friday, August 10, 2001; 7:02 AM

LOS ANGELES -- Emmy-winning director Alan Rafkin, whose credits include four
decades of television's most popular comedies, including "The Andy Griffith
Show" and "M-A-S-H," has died of heart disease. He was 73.

Rafkin died Monday at UCLA Medical Center.

During his prolific career, Rafkin directed episodes for more than 80
prime-time television series, including "The Dick Van Dyke Show," "The Mary
Tyler Moore Show," "I Dream of Jeannie," "Laverne & Shirley," "Murphy Brown"
and "The Jeff Foxworthy Show."

He won an Emmy in 1982 for an episode of "One Day at a Time" and two cable
ACE awards, in 1988 and 1990, for "It's Gary Shandling's Show."

Rafkin attributed his success and longevity to his personality and the fact
that, "I wanted to work."

That personality, he said in his 1998 memoir, "Cue the Bunny on the Rainbow:
Tales from TV's Most Prolific Sitcom Director," was that of a curmudgeon.

The book's title was taken from one of Rafkin's first television jobs, cuing
the puppeteer who handled a bunny on the old "Captain Kangaroo" show.

The memoir gave the director an opportunity to sound off on the many
television stars he worked with over the years.

He said Penny Marshall and Cindy Williams of "Laverne & Shirley," were
"undisciplined and bratty," while Brooke Shields of "Suddenly Susan" was
"the most gracious, funny, respectful young lady."

"To this day, Ron Howard at the age of 6 is no different than Ron Howard is
at whatever he is today. He is a delightful, gracious human being," he said
of "The Andy Griffith Show" actor who grew up to be a prominent Hollywood
director.

Of Shandling, he said: "He can whine until your teeth crack, but he's always
ready to work, no matter what."

Rafkin was born in New York and graduated from Syracuse University's School
of Management. He began in show business as a nightclub comic and later
acted occasionally in prime-time series and soap operas. He also directed
movies in the 1960s and '70s starring Don Knotts.

All,

Do you remember Reta Shaw, Barney's voice teacher? I came across a
reference to here in Helene Hanff's Underfoot in Show Business recently.
Seems Shaw and Hanff jointly were responsible for the box office one season
of summer stock. By the way, if you haven't seen "84 Charing Cross," here's
one total recommendation for it! And for the book, naturally.

Lots of luck to you and yours.

Over 35 years to go from E2 to E3. (PFC to Lance
Corporal). Amazing. I realize how strong the show
affected society years ago, when my friends from high
school went into the US Marine Corps(e) and they were
called "Gomers". For some reason, they weren't too
fond of that title. Also knew a small town policeman
who was referred to as "Barney Fife". Last I heard he
was a security cop at a shopping mall. How could you
not be proud of being called Barney?

Thanks are going out from me today for two things. First of all, thanks to Mr.
Mulik, who I knew would be able to answer my Leon question! I am sure that I
could've watched all of the shows again to find out where Leon appeared, but it
is easier to have an answer from someone who knows! Thanks again! Also thanks
to the person or people who sent the article about "Gomer", Jim
Nabors getting a promotion from the USMC. I enjoyed reading that, and I'm glad
they are FINALLY giving the ol' Gome the promotion he deserves. And that final
quote was great! Sgt. Carter may have gotten mad at Gomer and for some good
reasons, but he really was a good Marine! Congratulations, Congratulations,
Congratulations! (and Shazam!)... Lisa

I just saw the sad news that we've lost a behind-the -scenes citizen of
Mayberry. Director Alan Rafkin has died at the age of 73. He was a very
prolific Emmy-winning director with a slew of credits that also include
"Captain Kangaroo," "I Dream of Jeannie," "M*A*S*H," "Laverne & Shirley" and
"Murphy Brown." In his 1998 biography "Cue the Bunny on the Rainbow" (a
reference to his "Captain Kangaroo" days), he dished on some of the stars he
worked with. He said some harsh things about a few actors but very kind things
about good people, and he actually singled out Ron Howard as
"a delightful, gracious human being," and said "To this day, Ron Howard at the
age of 6 is no different than Ron Howard is at whatever he is today..."

There is a wonderful article in the October issue of Blue Ridge Country
Magazine called "A Visit to Mt. Airy, N.C.- Looking For Andy".
Complete with great photos and everything. There's a nice, big,
colorful photo of David Browning at a previous Mayberry Days. Just
thought you all might like to check it out if you didn't already know
about it.
