<<From what I read, it seems to be a good place for those (me included) who
yearn for a little controversy occasionally.>>

That's the idea....let folks talk pretty much about whatever they'd like. Since
folks have a choice as to reading a topic or not (more so than with this
mailing list), I think the Golden Door is a better place for conversation. The
Digest is for talking just about Mayberry and related stuff and keeping it
positive. The Door is a place folks can go for more indepth discussion without
forcing that discussion on everybody else.

I hope y'all will enjoy it.

My favorite episode has to be the one where Goober makes a U-turn, Barney
gives him a ticket, Barney resigns and puts himself in jail and has an
argument with Otis. Barney tells Otis to "nip it" and Otis says, "Who's
going to make me?" Barney says,"Me, myself and I." Otis responds, saying,
"That's three people." Others have to be "Man in a Hurry," where Barney
prattles on about taking a nap and going to Thelma Lou's to watch TV and
anything involving the town choir. The man in "Man in a Hurry" showed up
again as Mr. Foster of Foster Shoe Polish and puts Aunt Bee on television.
I also noticed that Aunt Bee appeared on the "Lone Ranger" as a villian who
almost burned down a shed with the Lone Ranger and Tonto in it.

"Andy and Barney in the BIg City" was cited as an episode that had only two of
the main cast characters in it. I believe that the opening of this episode
involved both Aunt Bee and Opie at the Taylor house as Andy and Barn are
getting ready to leave. Aunt Bee gives them a sack of sandwiches to take and
Opie offers to carry his Pa's suitcase (but Andy say's it's too heavy).

rotten." -Barney

>>>YOUNGER "watchers" will notice his name listed #14 in the Tom Hanks'
movie cast credits for "GREEN MILE"-- he plays the Tom Hanks' character as
an old man-- with very little make-up needed-- but his voice is
UNMISSABLE...that's Dabbs Geer!
>>>

He also has a small part in Con Air, as the guy hiding under the truck.
BTW, it's Greer, not Geer. Mr. Greer was originally from my neck of the
woods (the Missouri Ozarks - he was born in Fairview or Anderson, depending
on which source you check). I've never had the pleasure of meeting him, but
I have talked with some local folks who "knew him way back when."

Subject: TAGS portrait...

Hey Gang,

I was goofing off in the mall here in Jackson, TN the other day and ran
across a lady at one of those setups in the middle of the corridors with some
TAGS drawings. I was looking and there was one of Goober, Opie, Aunt Bee,
and Barney but no Andy when I saw a card that said ask to see the TAGS
collage. I asked and found what I was looking for. It is a nice portrait
with Opie and Andy eating pie as Aunt Bee watches in the middle, Floyd and
Gomer on top, Barney and Andy on each side, and Oits and Goober on the bottom
with "The Andy Griffith Show" across the middle. It's nice...REAL NICE!!!
If you want to see it or any of her other work go to
<A HREF="www.my-portraits.com">www.my-portraits.com</A> and go to the movie/TV
section. I got me one so check
it out...

Subject: Radio Voice Impersonators

I don't know if they use these in every market, but here in Central Indiana
we often have radio commercials involving celebrity voice impersonators.
Every one from John Wayne and Jimmy Stewart to Ross Perot and other
politicians are parodied. A very popular character to imitate is our
beloved Barney Fife. There is a particularly funny Barney bit running
currently advertising a Gun and Knife show. (what a natural, right). It
involves such things as Barney hunting Dinosaurs and trying to shoot a
Thesaurus, a Lesson in Life from Fife, and a jealous Barney hearing of a
purple dinosaur who dares go by the name of Barney (he says there's only
room for one Barney around here.) The voice is so-so, he's no David
Browning, but the lines are really funny, and true to Barney's character. I
wish you could all hear it.

I saw something on Ebay that had the name "Opie Howard" in the listing? Do
you think there is there an Opie Howard senior?

I guess you would call that guy on the radio ad a "trained voice" but I
wouldn't know, because I am,

I was watching the manicurist episode last night also, and asked myself the
same question. I don't recall ever seeing a beauty parlor in mayberry. Have
you?

While Andy Taylor was meticulously fair, generous, prompt and honest
(qualities he gained from working with Deputy Fife), he was not above
telling a "white lie" now and then to protect those for whom he cared.

Mayberry not based on Mt. Airy? Surely that was just another of those
"white lies" to protect the innocent.
