Remember how Andy always downplays Barney's mistakes and covers up for
him. We should all act that way.

Working in radio here in Indiana, and the Production Manager, I always
get to process the commercials Joe is speaking of. I would like to add
my view in that the voice is more than so-so, but actually a very good
job being done. In the spots Barney is conversing with the famous
invisible rabbit Harvey from Jimmy Stewart fame. Of course you never
hear the rabbit, but what always makes me laugh is the disclaimer at the
end that says "celebrity voice and imaginary character impersonated.."
Now tell me how do you impersonate someone that you never hear,
heheheheheh.
Happy TAGS viewing!!!!

Hi Gang...
If I write too many more times I'll be as frequent as Paul, LOL
The episode that quickly comes to mind that had a beauty parlor is when
Aunt Bee took flying lessons. They showed all the ladies sitting under
the dryers reading their womens magazine while Aunt Bee was reading
AVIATION, or something to that effect.
Thats all this time, I promise!

When Barney locked himself in the bank's safe, he broke out through the wall
of a beauty shop. Aunt Bee is shown in the beauty shop in the episode about
her learning to fly and also in the one where she gets the wig. I think she
also wears her mink coat into the beauty shop. There may be others, too.

Haha, around here it's always been treated as one word, 'mommanem'.
To Stan Oliver, I'm sure no one has told you yet but it is considered rude to
type in all capital letters in e-mail and bulletin board messages. It is
interpeted as 'shouting'. Just thought I'd let ya know.

The beauty parlor was shown in at least 2 episodes. One was the black
and white episode "The Bank Job" where Barney is trying to prove that the
Mayberry bank is an easy target for a robber. He dresses up as the
cleaning woman and accidently locks himself in the safe. He breaks through
the wall into the beauty parlor next door to escape. The other was the
color episode "Aunt Bee on TV" when Aunt Bee won all those prizes on the TV
quiz
show. When her mink coat arrives, she puts it on and goes to the beauty
parlor to show it off. It is also mentioned, but not shown, in the black
and white episode "Aunt Bee's Romance" when Aunt Bee's old beau Roger Hanover
is
coming for a visit. Andy asks her what time she is going to the beauty
parlor. There may be others, but that is all I remember.

As Barney impersonates Mrs. McGruder's cousin, in "The Bank Job"
(cleaning the bank for her because she allegedly has fungus of the
knee), he gets inadvertantly locked in the vault and crashes
through the wall into the beauty parlor.

Subject: Fw: How To Stop A Virus
This tip won't prevent YOU from getting any viruses (you have to scan those
attachments yourself before opening them to do that), but it will stop
those viruses from latching onto your address book and sending itself out
to others.
To avoid spreading computer viruses, create a contact in your email address
book with the name : !0000 with no email address in the details.
This contact will then show up as your first contact. If a virus attempts
to do a "send all" on your contact list, your pc will put up an error
message saying that: "The Message could not be sent. One or more recipients
do not have an e-mail address. Please check your Address
Book and make sure all the recipients have a valid e-mail address."
You click on OK and the offending (virus) message would not have been sent
to anyone. Of course no changes have been made to your original contacts
list. The offending (virus) message may then be automatically stored in
your "Drafts" or "Outbox" folder. Go in there and delete the offending
message. Problem is solved and virus is not spread.
Try this and pass on to your email contacts. The more people that use this
technique, the less vulnerable we will be to viruses that spread in this
manner!

Well, since I never post here unless I can back it up, here goes:
Andy said it on the 1993 TV special, TAGS Reunion. His exact quote was:
"Over the years, a lot of people have come to believe that Mayberry is
based on my home town, and it's not."

Aunt Bee went to one when that visiting pastor came to town. Helen was theree
getting her hair done, and Aunt Bee ended up getting a wig. Clara had already
been there, as we found out when Opie asked her if she had to go to the beauty
shop, too. Opie saved himself when he told Clara that she looked real nice. I
can't remember if they said the name of the shop. I'd have to watch it again
to find out. It was a color episode.
Remember the end of it when Aunt Bee had admitted that she wore a wig and
everyone was relieved that it was over and Clara came by - of course, wearing a
wig! And Floyd was absolutely hilarious in this episode, wondering if Bee's
wig came from China and trying to touch her wig in the middle of church. I
thought Aunt Bee looked cute with her wig on, but Clara should've stayed with
her natural color. (I hope I didn't just break
a rule there - sorry!!) Lisa

I remember a couple of times - one was when Barney was locked in the bank
vault and busted through the wall right next to the hair dryers. Then,
another time, Aunt Bee and Clara were in the beauty shop - I think it was the
"wig" episode - where Clara noticed a gray hair. The hairdresser said she
must have missed it with the dye. Are there more?

In the episode where the Taylors get back from Hollywood and
Aunt Bee gets the fur coat she won, there is a scene in the
beauty shop. I think when Barney gets stuck in the bank
vault and crashes through the back wall, the other side of
the wall is the beauty shop. I think Aunt Bee got the idea
of getting a wig in the beauty shop in the episode where she
gets a wig and is later embarrassed around the visiting
preacher. That's all I can think of at the moment.

Well, it's been awhile since I have visited with you'all, when I saw the
question about the beauty parlor in Mayberry I just had to write. I remember
an episode where Barney dresses as a washer woman and gets himself locked in
the bank vault. He finally breaks out on the other side and it was into the
beauty parlor if I'm not mistaken. Just saying my piece, love to visit with
you'all!

When I first saw the posting from Bob Bravetti saying that Andy Griffith
said that Mayberry was NOT based on his hometown of Mount Airy, I wanted to
reply, but hesitated, lest I be accused of "shameless promotion" of the new
book I have written (available at Weavers in September.) But Stan Oliver's
response leads me to also respond to the question.
Let me quote from the "Preface" of my book. "In an interview some years
ago, Andy Griffith remarked that no real town could actually be "Mayberry"
since everybody's problems were solved in 30 minutes. That's true, but as
it says on a local post card: 'If there's a "Mayberry" Mount Airy is its
mentor.' In addition to including actual locations and names of real
people, much of the atmosphere of Mount Airy, and the congenialty of its
residents shone through in every episode of the television series.
Because I grew up in Mount Airy during the same era as Andy - went to the
same schools, and had many of the same mentors - I see MANY things in the
episodes that remind me of SPECIFIC situations that occured in Mount Airy
as Andy and I were growing up.
Remember when Andy and Barney were going out to try to find the folks with
the illegal liquor still "up near Fancy Gap."? In my book I talk about a
REAL BUST of an illegal still near the REAL town of Fancy Gap. My
grandfather was Justice of the Peace and U. S. Commissioner and he was in
charge of bringing the offenders to arraignment in court. These things
happened while Andy was growing up and he carried his memories into the
crafting of "Mayberry."
Of Course," Mayberry" is not totally the same as Mount Airy - the creative
talents of the writing crew put in their "two cents worth," but the writers
and Andy's agent, Richard Link, have confirmed that Andy had complete
control over the final product, and that he drew on his memories of growing
up Mount Airy to give the series an "authentic" feel.

Mount Airy and Mayberry
I just happened to pick-up the issue of Biography Magazine from my library
that features Andy Griffith. Here is what he and the writer say about Mount
Airy.
"Actually, there is no Mayberry, at least not in the sense that you can
find it on a map" says Griffith. "But its also every small town" Andy
Samuel Griffth's real-life Mayberry, the town in which today he is revered
as a local hero is Mount Airy. He was born there June 1 1926.... The comic
mis-adventures depicted in the Andy Griffith Show were not autobiographical.
Nor was the show's setting a mirror image of Griffith's hometown. In Mount
Airy, there was no Barney, no Aunt Bee, No Floyd the barber, no Otis the
drunk. But the general ambience of Mayberry was reminiscent of the place
Griffith knew in his youth. As one resident told TV guide in 1966, "Andy
never left Mount Airy, He plain took it to Hollywood with him"
(end of excerpt)
So, yes much of what Andy grew up with became a part of Mayberry..just
because he was the show creator, and Mount Airy was the town he knew so
well. I interpret him saying, it was not his intent to recreate Mount Airy,
but rather all the good things from there are well as other small towns. I
would add that, though I have never been to Mount Airy, it seems that the
town has celebrated its most famous citizen and his almost namesake town, by
becoming even more like Mayberry than Mount Airy was when Andy grew up
there...And bottom line..its still the closest thing to Mayberry for all us
fanatics!

>>"Andy and Barney in the Big City" was cited as an episode that had only
two of the main cast characters in it. I believe that the opening of this
episode involved both Aunt Bee and Opie at the Taylor house...<<<<
You are correct, Dan, I'm going to have to fire my eye doctor!
The correct episode (with 2 main characters) is the County Nurse #56,,not
Big City #57

Barney did break into the "beauty shop" from the bank vault. Also Aunt bee
was there reading her aviation magazine.
