Hi Mayberry Family, I have a question....I received my first Andy tape from
Columbia House aprox. two months ago. I paid for it in return mail, and
still haven't received another one. I e-mailed customer service at Columbia
House and they said they were automatically mailed out every four weeks.
Well, it's been way past four weeks and I haven't seen hide nor hair of
another tape. Anyone else have this problem? "I beg your pardon, my mother
was a nurse"

Hey,
My uncle use to say that to us when he would be leaving the house, except he
would add " on the animal side." I didn't know anyone else ever said that!

Actually, *I* am the one who fired that one into the ceiling! I saw it on a
local station and for some reason the opening scene was missing, it opened
with the establishers of the city. I *did* see that scene intact on TV
Land...

Anita, I always think that about the prices when I see those old shows
or movies, then I have to stop and think about what people got paid in
wages in those days. Would be nice if those items cost that today.
Especially gasoline! Everybody have a safe and
happy Labor Day weekend. Mary Grace in Georgia

I think I've heard just about enough about that tomato! ha ha. Actually
Terry Lee, I did publish a correction shortly after that appeared, but it
appears not everyone saw it. This wasn't the first correction. I looked at
the chart wrong, and you are correct. That episode had more that 2 main
characters. The one I should have said was "The County Nurse #56", just one
above. It just had Andy and Barney (not counting Nurse Mary and Rafe of
course). Now if the chart is wrong on that, Well I'm just all wet, and I'll
run up an alley and holler fish.

I've enjoyed discussing some of the multi-appearance extra's and I'd like to
mention another familiar face. Roy Engel. Roy, I believe, is kind-of a
square faced everyman type guy. No white hat like Joe Hamilton and Johny (T
Jacobs) Coons. No Schwamp hair piece. The one common thing you see in some
of his appearances though is he likes to laugh at Barney. He is in the
crowd of "Citizen's Arrest" and he is Judd, one of those laughing at Barney
when he arrests Mr. Meldrim trying to break into his own Bank in "Barney in
the Cave Rescue" (he is also at the cave). He is the trumpeter in Sermon
for Today, is in the Gold Truck Episode...as well as Gomer the House Guest,
Andy and the New Mayor (Jess Morgan) Sam for Town Council and Howard and
Millie.(conductor) I could be wrong on some of these facts (it wouldn't be
the first time)...but see if you can spot Roy... A Mayberry citizen.

uh over and under, under and over under and out, uh ..bye

A few days ago, someone asked how Andy hurt his hand when he had a cast on
it.

I am currently reading his biography. In it, he comments "It had nothing
to do with my professional life". The writer had given implications
earlier that the stress of the demands of Andy's success after he and first
wife Barbara had been a entertainment team was beginning to wear on their
marriage. He notes later that one difference between Andy Taylor and Andy
Griffith was that he had a short temper. So the fist into the door incident
apparently happened in his home, during some domestic argument.

>>> [ In "Opie and Mike" Aunt Bee] mentioned the fact that there was some
furniture in the attic that belonged to Andy's mother and father. Does
anyone else remember them being mentioned previously?

We never learn their names of Andy's parents, but Andy does mention his
father in a couple of episodes:

In "Keeper of the Flame," he tells Opie about the time his father spanked
him after playing with matches and candles

In "The Bank Job" when Barney comments about Asa's antiquated "Teddy
Roosevelt horse pistol," Andy relates a story from his childhood, when his
daddy convinced Asa to let the young Andy handle the pistol (could this
event have ignited the spark that later inspired Andy to become a lawman?
Very possibly!)

Apparently Andy's mother died when he was very young, because in the first
episode he tells Opie that Aunt Bee raised him from the age when he was "no
bigger than you" (about six years old).

Relative to the prices on the grocery store window. They were not prices
in use in the '50s & '60s when "The Andy Griffith Show" was set, but rather
those in use in the '30s and '40s when Andy was growing up in his hometown,
Mount Airy, North Carolina.

Virtually all of the prices reflect an earlier era, as do many other things
on the show. Both Andy and the producers of the show have said that they
were going for the "feel" of earlier times.

It is one of the things I give attention in my new book. It will be
available at "Weavers" in a few weeks!

I could be wrong about this, but have you ever noticed that a "b" sound is
often heard as a "v" sound over T.V. or radio? I know for years I thought
the owner of the Chicago White Socks was Bill Beck instead of Veck, because
that's what it sounded like to me when I heard his name on T.V. Just a
thought.
Barb

Actually, to make sound and spelling matters even more convoluted, the owner
of the White Sox was Bill Veeck. I went to school with his son, an
incredibly intelligent man who is a professor and anthropologist now! (just
a little neighborly news).

Subject: First Look

Hey Folks,

Allan has graciously granted me this opportunity to offer our friends on the
Bulletin Board a "first look" at a collectible in conjunction with Mayberry
Days this year.

I have created a print commemorating Mayberry Days, 2001 featuring the stars
that will be in attendance this year. Betty Lynn, Maggie Peterson, Doug
Dillard, Howard Morris, LeRoy McNees and George Spence are all depicted on
this 12" x 24" full color laminated (front and back) print. It is ideal for
autographs. As a matter of fact, I created it with that in mind.

It is a limited edition of 100. No more will be printed. The cost of the
print is $25. Also, $5 from each print sold will be donated to the Surry Arts
Council to assist them in bringing Mayberry Days to us each year. They do a
great job, as all who have attended in the past know. Those of you who are
thinking about going, do yourself a favor and make the trip. You will have a
weekend of good, clean, family fun, which is unfortunately a rarity these
days.

To get a glimpse of this print, go to:
http://members.aol.com/gwedo186/mdays.jpg

Prints are available immediately on a first come, first serve basis. If you
would like to purchase a print or have any questions, you can email me
directly at [EMAIL PROTECTED] Please do not reply to the digest. We don't
want to tie things up with trivial trivialities. I will give you further
instructions on where to send payment, etc. I will accept orders until Monday
Sept. 17. That way you will be sure to have your print with you when you get
to Mt. Airy.

Thanks,

Gary
