In addition to the lack-of-quality points (editing, poor contrast, scratchy
films, replaced theme, et. al.) that the bargain tape sets at Wal-Mart, K-Mart,
etc. have, there is one more very important point: the bargain tapes are
collections taken from the 16 public domain episodes. That's all - 16
episodes! That's 233 copyrighted episodes you will never see on those videos.
Columbia House is working with digitally remastered 35mm prints from the
Paramount Studios library. They have all 249 episodes to choose from. So far,
they've provided 80 episodes... hopefully, our support will keep a good thing
going.

Someone sent a message to WBMUTBB asking people to write to Columbia House
requesting more episodes
of TAGS. Well, that won't work. The only message that they'll get is if
you BUY THE TAPES!
>>>
That's EXACTLY right. Look at it this way: Suppose you make stuff to sell
at craft shows. Let's say you made 100 of something, and every person who
looked at them said, "Wow, those are great! I wish you'd make 100 more!"
But what if nobody BOUGHT any of them? It wouldn't make sense for you to
make more.
Columbia House really does care about the quality of the programs on their
tapes; not just for TAGS, but for all of the other great TV shows they
"produce" too. However, like anybody else they are in business to make
money. True, their tapes are more expensive than those cheap-o tapes you
can get at Wal-Mart, but they are worth every penny! Besides that, I'm not
even convinced that all of those other companies have legal permission to
produce and sell TAGS tapes.

>>>But what happened in the show? Didn't Gomer end up helping somebody at
the station?
For them that don't know, this thread is about an episode of Gomer Pyle -
USMC in which Gomer comes home to Mayberry on leave. Here's a basic summary
of the plot, without giving away the ending:
Gomer gets off the bus in Mayberry, and enjoys a nostalgic look around town,
commenting to himself how nothing has changed (he had been away for about 4
years). He talks with an old-timer (Judd, but with a different name) who
tells him that Floyd has retired, and that Emmett has moved into Floyd's old
location. He goes into the courthouse and yells out "Surprise, surprise,
surprise!" but then he realizes Andy isn't there. An officer from the state
police has come to fill in while the Taylor family is on vacation.
Next, Gomer goes over to the filling station and sees someone working under
a car. He thinks it's Goober, but it's some young feller who's filling in
for Goober, who went camping with the Taylors. At that point, someone with
a mechanical emergency phones the station, so Gomer volunteers to man the
pumps while he young mechanic goes to help the stranded motorist.
Gomer gets into an old pair of coveralls and is really enjoying the chance
to get back to his old job for a while. Before long, two tough-looking guys
drive up in a car with serious engine trouble. Gomer goes to a lot of time
and trouble to get their car working again, and when he starts to write out
the bill, they pull a gun on him and drive away. It turns out they were
crooks on the run from the law, and Gomer has unknowingly assisted them.
When the police learn the crooks had engine trouble, they suddenly become
optimistic at catching up with them, until Gomer tells them "their car had a
whole lot more zip going out than coming in." The rest of the episode is a
lot like the TAGS episodes where Andy just wants to do his job (except that
it's Gomer in this case), but the state police rudely tell him to just stay
out of the way.

Subject: "Mayberry Haiku"
Date: Mon, 3 Dec 2001 07:50:04 -0700
For whatever reasons,
the poetry style known
as "Haiku" seems to be getting
very popular in today's "Pop Culture".
With the youth sending email in this
form, instead of normal writing.
"Haiku" is a 3 line poem, rhyming or not,
first line has 5 syllables, second has 7,
and the last line has 5 syllables.
Since TAGS is ALWAYS "hip",
I present the first, in what I hope
all you can join, in "MAYBERRY HAIKU".
BARNEY PARNEY POO
Barney Parney Poo (5)
The women all love Barney (7)
Barney is so "suave" (5)
Thelma Lou watch out
Juanita is after him
He sings her a song
Barney is crafty
The girls don't catch on to him
But Andy caught him
Andy keeps secrets
So Barn' can always be called

remember if Paul Revere's ride takes place in either of these states.
>>>
I never was any great shakes at history either, but I think Paul Revere's
ride was in Massachusetts. We never did come up with answers for Delaware
or Connecticut; perhaps there aren't any.
There are at least two for Illinois, specifically, Chicago. Barney's
cymbals came from Cymbal City in Chicago, and Andy's high school sweetheart
Sharon moved to Chicago. Can anybody get Iowa, Indiana, or Idaho?
In case some of you are new to this group and have no idea what we're
talking about, we're trying to come up with TAGS episodes that contain
references to specific states. We're going in alphabetical order (A, B, C,
F, L, G - I know a lot of other letters too, but not in a row like that).
We're up to the I's now.

From: Jason Harrod <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Greetings Y'all,
I am new to this list and am still learning the ropes, and don't mean any
disrespect, especially to Allan, who seems to do such a good job (I have
seen him live as Floyd and thoroughly enjoyed it :)).
I don't understand why it's necessary to limit the range of discussion
of TAGS by only allowing "positive" comments. We all love TAGS (I assume).
I view it as superior American art, and welcome the full range of thoughts
and feelings of others about it.
Any serious discussion about any topic will necessarily include some
"negative" things, especially if it's being discussed by mature adults.
Obviously, no one wants indiscriminate flaming... But what's wrong with
offering a respectful, honestly held opinion? IMHO, discussion is richer if
it can be honest.
Hope everyone is well,
Jason

I feel like with the number of new members we've gotten lately that it's time
to restate "The Rules" for everybody. You old-timers might want to read
through this just to refresh your memories and I think it's good for all of
us to try and remember these tried and true rules.
I believe that by reading through the Rules you will come to understand why
that the "keep it positive" rule is in place.---- Allan
************************
Hey Everybody,
Boy, things have really been growing here in out little corner of Mayberry!!
Because of that I think it's time to remind everyone what WBMUTBB is all
about:
We all know what Mayberry is about but do we realize why it is that we all
visit there everyday? I know that the characters are great but more than
that, they're friends. We "know" these people and it's just a joy to visit
them every chance we get to watch them as they work their way through getting
locked in a cell because the door "clangs shut" or any of the other wonderful
situations they face. Things always work out in a wonderful way leaving a
smile on our faces.
Mayberry is an escape from the day-to-day trials we all face. A short trip
to a place where every body cares about one another and where we can forget,
for a while, the fact that "real life" isn't as much like that as we'd like.
I started WBMUTBB back in 1990, along with several other good folks, and
since then I've tried to make it as much like a "corner of Mayberry" as
possible. I wanted this place to be somewhere folks could go and forget
about the outside world and relax by reading about Andy, Barney, Opie, Aunt
Bee, and the rest of our Mayberry family.
To try and make that happen I've required everyone who wanted to join to tell
us a little about themselves so we could get to know them just a little bit.
After all, in Mayberry everyone knew everybody else and how can we have a
community without having at least some idea about our neighbors?
I've also had a couple of rules here and I try to enforce them.
Of course Rule #1 is...you guessed it...Obey all rules.
Rule #2 is this: Talk about the things you like about Mayberry..not things
you don't like.
I know some folks forget this second rule sometimes and they don't really
understand WHY I think Rule #2 is important so let me just give you an
example. Let's say I were to say, "Boy, I really hate Barney. I mean, look
how stupid he is and poor Andy has to put up with him." If I said that
(and meant it) what are the first feelings that come over you?
First you'd feel like, "Man, that guys a jerk!" Then you'd get aggravated at
this guy talking about your Favorite character (and friend), Barney Fife.
Even if Barney's not your very favorite character, you'd likely be upset
about this guy talking about your neighbor.
I've never heard anyone say anything like that about Barn but I have about
other characters and folks forget that just because they don't like a
particular character doesn't mean that character isn't someone elses
favorite. You see, if I talk about your favorite character saying negative
things about 'em it takes your fun away.
The last thing I want to see happen here in "our little corner of Mayberry"
is to see someone loose their joy. There are PLENTY of other places
folks can go to talk all they want to about things they "don't like." I would
like to think that WBMUTBB is at least one place in Mayberry that I
don't have to deal with folks dislikes.
There's plenty of things to like about Mayberry and I hope that you'll all
join me in celebrating THOSE things instead of dwelling on the things
bring us back to reality and take away some of the magic that is
Mayberry.
I think that's enough about Rule #2 and I hope you all understand the rule.
It's not to take away from your fun but to encourage you, all, to tell us about
what's fun to you and share your good feelings with others.
We have something special here. It's something you don't find often on the
internet. No "flames", no "fighting", no "foul language." We have a place
that children and adults can come and enjoy themselves.
Mayberry is a wonderful place and I'm just glad to be a part of this little
corner of it.
Your Friend and neighbor,
Allan Newsome

Columbia House videos are the best currently available. However, I have to say
that I would certainly have chosen different episodes to include in the
collection. Many TAGS "classics" (both color & B&W) have been overlooked in
favor of episodes that are, in my opinion, mediocre. The best videos I have
found are those that were offered by Premier Promotions several years ago. The
only place I have found these is on eBay. The bidding gets quite high on some
of these tapes but they are well worth it for the true TAGS fan.

I can name more than 6 times a female was locked in the Mayberry jail. 1)
the woman speeder 2) the pretty woman prisoner (I think she was a jewel
thief) 3) Aunt Bee and several other females are locked up on the day
Barney is acting sheriff because Andy is out of town 4) the family that
was locked up in the Christmas episode was a man, his wife, and 2 kids. 5) Helen
locks herself in the jail to get away from Warren in the episode where he
sleepwalks 6) the ladies church organization is locked up by Warren for
playing bingo 7) another ladies group is locked up when they get drunk on
the Indian elixir sold by the Colonel 8) the fun girls lock themselves in
the jail There are 2 more that I can think of when a female is in a cell,
but the door is not locked. One is the first episode with the Darlings
when Andy allows Briscoe, Charlene and the boys to "bed down" in the
jail. The second is when the county nurse goes into the jail cell to
give Rafe Hollister his tetanus shot. Mary Grace Gossage"I'm locked
up with the sheriff! I'm locked up with the sheriff!"
