Andrea, I hope your toothache is better. Andy did say something like this once
(when he and Ellie and Opie were trying to make Barney feel better about the
lack of crime in Mayberry and were making up a crime for him to solve): "And
if they's a tooth dentist in town, people should get a tooth ache every once in
awhile" {not a direct quote, but close I think}. He was basically telling Opie
that every citizen that had a job had the
right to do that job and it was the obligation of other citizens to make sure
that the jobholders had something to do. I know that doesn't really say that
there was a dentist in town, but there was the mention. Oh, yeah, and Gomer
took "Thelmer Lou" to Mt. Pilot to the dentists, didn't he? I just remembered
about that one. So maybe there was no dentist in town at that time.
I saw the tail end of a Dick Van Dyck show and lo, and behold (those are good
Christmas-time words aren't they?) there was Mrs. Willllleyyyyyyy who called
our "beloveded" Ernest T. a creachter! :)

>>>Was there ever a dentist in Mayberry? _Andrea .....up late with a
tooth ache of my own!
We never see him / her, nor do we even learn their name, but a Mayberry
dentist is mentioned in "Ellie for Council." Otis had been inarculated for
hitting his wife's mother in the mouth with a leg of lamb, and when Barney
comes in, he says "Oh, hi Otis! I just seen your mother-in-law comin' out
of the dentist's."
Another reference is in "Andy the Matchmaker," when Andy is telling Opie
that a good town owes its citizens the right to keep busy. If there's a
street cleaner in town, then folks are obliged to keep the streets just a
little bit dirty, and if there's a tooth dentist in town, folks ought to get
a toothache once in a while. Granted, this does not refer to a specific
Mayberry dentist.
Years later, in "Andy's Investment" Opie ponders the idea of someday
becoming a dentist. His pal Arnold wants to become a doctor, and they think
it would be a good idea to have their offices next door to each other.
A DENTIST -- GOOD GRIEF! (who knows where that quote came from?)

We all know that during the early years of the show, that Andy went through
several girlfriends before he settled on Helen. However, there are at least
two "old" girlfriends who appear on the show, by which I mean girlfriends from
his high school days and the like. Those two women are Sharon DeSpain and
Alice Harper. Are there others? Howard had been sweet on Alice too.
Just for the record, I like all the shows, including the color ones.

someone asked:
Hi Everyone,
I have not seen all the Mayberry episodes, but in all
the ones I've seen and
that's a lot there is no mention of a dentist. Was there
ever a dentist in
Mayberry?
_Andrea
.....up late with a tooth ache of my own!

I can't ever recall a dentist, but this may make for
another interesting trivia.. Name all of the professions
that are located in Mayberry.
Barber,
mortician/TV repairman,
postal clerk (with stamp selling
machine),
teacher
I'll let y'all take this over from there if you want.

Now, I'm not normally one to pry into what a person
makes but I was curious what Andy and Barney might
have made as a salary back in them days as a Sheriff
and Deputy. There are some clues to refer to in
numerous episodes that we can make an educated guess
with. Mostly, there are consumer-related clues, such
as: signs on Foley's Market window showing food
prices, signs in Floyd's Barbershop showing the cost
of haircuts; Barney's rent at Mrs. Mendlebright's was
$7 a week; when Andy and Barney stayed at a hotel in
Raleigh Andy lamented about having to pay $11 (I
think)for the room; when Barney dabbled as a Real
Estate agent he said that Andy could buy the Williams'
house for "35" (this one I'm not sure about, does he
mean thousands, or hundreds?); Barney saying on at
least one occasion that he never has any money left
over each paycheck (don't we all); Andy saying that he
couldn't afford (which is relative)to send Opie to a
out-of-state college on a sheriff's salary; Bobby
Fleet offering $75, then $100 a week, to Jim Lindsay
to join his band (of which I assume a professional
musician probably made a little more than the average
person); I believe on a color episode Barney bragged
that he made $75 a week as a detective in Raleigh, and
several other little hints of the cost of living at
the time. All things considered, I'm guessing that
Andy made about $300 a month and Barney around $200.
Anybody else have any guesses?
Chuck

I can't remember a dentist in Mayberry but there is an episode where
Andy tells Opie that if a town has a "tooth dentist", then the citizens ought
to get a toothache once in a while. Because after all, a town owes its
citizens a living.

In reply to Andrea, remember when Otis missed hitting his wife with a leg of
lamb? Andy says-"But you hit her mother!" Otis-"Yeah, right in the mouth!"
Then Barney comes in and says, "Hey Otis, I just saw your mother-in-law coming
out of the dentist office."
I won't tell your Aunt!
