Like many, I'm happy to have the earlier TAGS episodes back on TV Land,
and not disappointed that they seem to be hurrying through the first
season by only showing selected episodes. I've always thought that
things really hit their stride in the second season. I enjoyed the
irony the other night when Barney said "I'll just step out of the
picture" -- a picture neither he nor anybody else had been in from the
beginning of the show on account of a technical glitch. But we
many-times-arounders could see everything, anyway (though I wasn't
always sure when there was a close-up of Andy, a two-shot, etc., memory
being such an imperfect thing...). Isn't it wonderful to be able to
"play back" entire scenes in your head when you're sitting so apparently
attentively at a staff meeting?

Thanks to everyone who answered my question about why they are compelled to
have a complete set of taped Griffith shows. It wasn't one of my brighter
questions, but it got a lot of great answers. I think you convinced me to
get out that list, and then look for those other 9 or 10 episodes. I think
I'm about as dedicated a fan as most of us, I just never felt the urge to
pop in a tape of "Helen the Authoress" or any of my missing bottom 10
favorites, but hey what good is a set if its not complete? I like that
"proud shelf" idea too. How can I brag about my set, where they hidden in a
box in my closet? And who knows, someday I may want to answer a question
about Helen's proposed pen name..Wouldn't I feel like a fool if I missed out
on a prize, because I was too stubborn or lazy to finish taping my "set"?
All you dedicated full setters need to lobby Columbia house now too,
cause I'm thinkin about starting their set...and I'd hate to quit before it
was finished.
Oh and the Pizza question...that's easy, Andy and Miss Mary Simpson like
Pizza, and so did a certain Bongo playin' deputy. his favorite...Mozzarella
of course.

Mary cooked andy a pizza pie. Barney intruded and said "Pizza, looks like
mozzerella. I just love pizza" and then later
says "What'll it be tonight? Mozzerella or pepporoni. Doesn't matter to me;
I just love pizza." or something like that.

There is an episode where Andy is over at one of the county nurses house.
Mary, I think was her name, she was the blonde. Barney keeps poppin' up and
getting in Andy's way. He comes over for pizza with them, and says something
like "Where is the pizza? What are having tonight? Mozarella? That's my
favorite kind, mozarella."

Hey Stephanie
The first one I can remember is in Three's A Crowd in season
two where Andy is trying to court county nurse Mary Simpson.
Barney keeps barging in for Mary's pizza pie. His favorite
is mozzerella and pepperoni is a close second. He
pronounces them as MAH-suh-rella and pepper-elli or
something like that.
Also, in the final season in one of the Hollywood episodes,
Aunt Bee and Opie eat at a pizza place while Andy is
"romancing" Darlene Mason at a fancy eating restaurannt.
They probably had lots to talk about since the last time
Andy had seen her (Ruta Lee) she was a conniving reporter
from Raleigh trying to put Andy on Trial (episode 61)

Jason,
Ain't no big thang...All God's children make mistakes - now, if you were to
trip old Emma Watson, or kick that little shivery dog, that would be grounds
for an apology. We have all goofed, and it won't be the last time someone
goofs. :0)
Congratulations on the birth of your baby!!! I am also a lay-midwife, so I
love
hearing about people's families, and families are made of people, and people
were on TAGS, and people generally start as babies, and babies are God's
biggest little blessings, and another blessing was TAGS, and TAGS had
babies born on the show, so I appreciate you mentioning such a happy event
or all of us to rejoice over.
See how it all fits together? You can relate almost anything to TAGS if you
really try hard...
My best to you and yours!

In regards to seeing African Americans in Mayberry, I also recall seeing an
African American Man standing in line to enlist in the army when Ernest T Bass
tries to join up.
I recall reading somewhere that the reason that there were no African American
characters in the show was because of the fact that in the early 60's,
African Americans were not treated all that well, and in order to make the
show appear to be realistic, it was better no to have any African American
characters. We are talking about the Southern part of the Country in the
early 60's. The only parts available would have been to have someone with a
black housekeeper or something like that and they did not want to do that kind
of stereotyping. It's so nice that things have changed for the better. We
can all see that when many years later, Opie is lucky enough to have Flip
Conroy for his football coach.
Make it a good day!

It sure is nice to see the new people's comments on their views of the show.
I sent a message about a week ago listing 3 questions. I thought this would
be fun for all the gang but haven't seen any answers yet so here we go again.
1. What was the month and year mentioned on the show that Barney joined
the force. ( I have heard two different dates).
2. What is Barney's shoe size ?
3. What is Barney referring to about a 42-J ?
I hope you have fun finding the answers. I will give the answers that I
have in a day or two,and Allen,I hope you will agree with my answers.

Hi to all,
I hope y'all are doing ok! This idea came over me to know more about the
co-stars in the Universal Don Knotts movies (late 60s). In most of them, his
character winds up getting married, and while a few of the female leads are
familiar (Elayne Joyce and Yvonne Craig), others aren't quite as familiar.
Does anyone know what other work Barbara Rhoades ('Penny' in "Shakiest Gun...")
and Joan Staley have done before or after these great movies? It's also so
neat to see familiar Mayberry faces in some of them! And Frank Welker (who did
the voice of Freddie in "Scooby Doo") played Prentiss in "How to Frame a Fig".
Thanks! Louis

My father grew up in Tennessee, not too far from the mythical location of
Mayberry, if we go by the other geographical references. I asked him about
blacks in the area, was there discrimination, separate areas of town, etc,
all those things we typically think of as being race problems of the 50's and
60's. The fact is, there were towns which did not have blacks. Not by a
lack
of inclusion, it just happened that way. To add any other social bent to
this discussion is to presume something upon the show which wasn't
necessarily
there. Many small towns in states in which all races live are not necessarily
racially represented. To assume that blacks SHOULD have lived in Mayberry
is to foster another stereotype; i.e., all Southern town must have blacks
living
in them.
My best to you and yours!

Aunt Bee makes a good point. I grew up in a town (Henagar, AL) with no black
people living there and I'm only 36. There still aren't any African Americans
there OR in a 30 mile (or more) radius around the town. There were only 2 high
schools (out of 12) in the entire county that had any blacks attending. This
isn't, so far as I know, by any design. It's just the population make up of the
county.

Mary promised Andy a "pizza pie" that night that

eating the pizza, mozz-a-rella's his favorite.

Here's a question for those who know more than me -- and that's just about
everybody: Is Columbia House planning to offer TAGS on DVD? or do they
already? It looks like VHS will soon be joining Betamax (and if you don't
know what I'm talking about, that's my point exactly), and I'd like to have
all the episodes in a single format.
Also, do the current TAGS DVD's available have any special features?

Subject: TAGS as stress relief
Date: Thu, 10 Jan 2002 21:45:40 -0600
Count me as a member of the group who watches TAGS after a hard day.
After a stressful day at work, I have been known to say to my co-workers,
"Today has been so bad that I am going to have to watch at least 10
episodes of "The Andy Griffith Show" tonight." On one particularly
awful day, I turned on TV Land and they were showing the episode with the
salesman Bert Miller, which is one of my favorites. (Sterling Holloway,
who plays Bert Miller, is the original voice of Disney's Winnie the
Pooh. I love TAGS and I love Winnie the Pooh, so having "Winnie the
Pooh" appearing on TAGS is almost more excitement than I can
handle.) That is the episode where Andy and Barney are antagonizing Ben
Weaver.by setting up a store for Bert on the vacant lot. When Ben comes
in to the courthouse to complain, Andy and Barney sing "Spread a Little
Sunshine". On that day, I began to think about the person at work who
had caused me so much trouble and I jokingly told my mother that I was
not going to let her bother me. Instead, I was going to walk right into
her office and sing "Spread a Little Sunshine" and then turn around and
walk out without saying a word. I never did really do that, but just t!
hinking about it made me smile and that was a tremendous boost to my mood
that night. So, I am living proof that an episode of TAGS is one of the
best forms of stress relief around. I like "Spread a Little Sunshine".
It is one of my favorite TAGS songs. We have a dog named Sunshine. She
was not named for that song, but she does spread herself around. (She
sheds.) We also have a male betta fish named Fred after Fred Plummer, the
tough guy who was going to beat Barney up if he saw him out of uniform.
(We figured that since male betta fish have to have a bowl of their own
because they will kill other fish, they must be tough guys like Fred
Plummer.) Mary Grace Gossage"Spread a Little Sunshine" chapter TAGSRWC

big cheese."

In reply to Ms. Lynch's query, Mayberry loves pizza, especially Barney.
Mozzarella, pepperoni, it doesn't matter to him, he just loves pizza. He
loves it so much he forgets he's a third wheel at times.
