>>>I think someone asked about who made "gollywobblers" in an earlier
digest.
Interestingly, Buddy Ebsen also used the term "golly-wobbler" in one of the
Fess Parker "Davy Crockett" movies from the 1950s. As I recall, in that
context, the term meant a confusing, mixed-up situation.
BTW, it occurs to me that one's pocket is not the best place to carry a
fishing lure, especially one with as many hooks as a golly-wobbler. Seems
to me Opie should have known better.

Very good! There's at least one more: In to the side of Andy's desk in
"The Inspector."
Now, who can name three times Sheriff Andy Taylor fires a gun in the line of
duty? Military service does not count, because we don't know for sure that
Andy ever served in the military. We just know he was "in France during the
war" in one capacity or another.

I was thinking today about how many times we see Andy
shooting a gun. I can only remember 2 episodes;
someone help me out if I am missing any. The first
time I remember Andy shooting a gun was when he took
Thelma Lou's cousin skeet shooting. The next time I
remember him shooting a gun, this time to stop
criminals, was when he blew out the tires of the
counterfeiters. Are there any more?

There is a very nice article at the Mount Airy News website about the
continued increase in tourism in 2001.
http://www.mtairynews.com/cgi-local/top?section=top&story=visitorsincrease
Everyone who has been to Mount Airy and seen the Andy Griffith collection at
the Visitor Center has experienced their genuine welcome. I encourage you to
read the whole article, but the big statistic is 51,933 visitors last year
from all 50 states and 35 foreign countries! As a TAGS fan, I hope everyone
can take the opportunity to visit Mount Airy at least once (if you're like
me, you'll continue to come back!)
WBMUTBB members Ann Vaughn and Emmett Forrest are the two primary reasons
for the continued increase in tourism in Mount Airy thanks to their
generosity in sharing and promoting TAGS, along with the other area
attractions. They deserve a big 'thank you' for keeping the Mayberry Spirit
alive and well in Andy Griffith's hometown.

Lisa J. is correct about a reference to Nebraska by Emmett. I'd never heard
it before, and it went by so fast that I didn't get all the details (and of
course, I forgot to write down the episode name, so I don't even remember
what episode it was, and it was just on TV Land in December...guess my
petula obendalla isn't what it used to be!)...anyway...Emmett and others
were in the fix-it shop and Emmett made reference to someone (friend?
relative?) from Nebraska who held some elective office. I'd seen the
episode many times before and never noticed it, so it must have been edited
out of other versions...if'n I'd heard it before, I'm sure I'd have
remembered it, being a native Cornhusker...it just kills me that I can't
even remember the episode name now...I seem to remember that it was on TV
Land on a Friday night at 9 p.m. (Central Time), and thinking to myself that
it would be repeated on the following Monday at 6 p.m., but I forgot to
watch (maybe it was on December 28 and 31?) Anybody have a way to go back
in time and check what TV Land's schedules were in December?
All that to say Lisa is RIGHT! Emmett did mention Nebraska!

The comment from Becky and Gary regarding differing accents within the same
state is right on the mark. Accents vary to differing parts of Alabama, with
the southern half of the state having slower accents than the northern half.
Question: has anyone ever noticed this on the show? I would submit that the
Fun Girls (even if they didn't sound particularly southern) were intended to
reflect a slight difference even just as far away as Mount Pilot...

On the subject of Mayberry's African Americans, don't forget that famous
parade scene with the crowd. And not only did we meet Flip, the football
star turned coach, but we heard that he came home to help out with his
mother's business. Quite impressive, since I would think it's likely not
many AA women owned their own businesses in the south in the late 1960s.
Then again, Mayberry was progressive enough to have a female pharmacist who
ran for town council in 1961 so who should be surprised? :-)

I think Allan handled THAT one nice-- REAL nice!
I-- too-- think no one would be THAT dumb to send
in all those racist comments... even if they DID
think that way. Sounds like a computer hijacking!
All the "black-sightings" in Mayberry ARE getting
tedious though. The folks who produced the show
have been VOCALLY forth-coming with remarks that
there SHOULD HAVE been Blacks ON THE SHOW-- not just
in non-speaking crowd scenes, either. Now, let's get
on to something else... before Allan starts chewing
on them scissors in his pocket!

Just thought I'd tell the folks out there that

Allan,
This type of situation raises it's ugly head occasionally, and you handled it
very well. No matter what the discussion topic, all over this wide world,
anywhere there are human beings, there will always be someone out there
with a negative or just plain mean-spirited opinion who will feel compelled
to spew his ugliness on all around him. You graciously gave this individual
an opportunity to respond if someone has played a mean trick on his
computer, therefore not accusing unjustly. I admire that. Your response
frees us to continue discussing topics which may, on the rare occasion
evoke this kind of response because we know you will "take care of
business" when necessary. The fact is, very little said on this Digest
which is not in the spirit of Mayberry. This is, by any standards, an
exceptionally nice group of people.
Mayberry is my home town, the home town of my heart, where anyone who
is a good neighbor is welcome.
My best to you and yours!

Hi All,
Three comments & a question...
1) If "Dan" really wrote that note, I really feel sorry for
him. Prejudice is something I have never understood.
2) I was born in SC, but raised in NY & PA. Now live in IN
for many years. People say I have an "accent", but can't
figure out from where. :) Every summer when I was young we
used to visit my Mom's family in SC. My Dad said I always
came back "sounding like a rebel". I guess that southern
accent is pretty contagious. :)
3) When & how did the actress who played Miss Crump die? I
noticed that she wasn't in the reunions or TAGS bios, &
then read somewhere that she had died. Any info?
4) We are thoroughly enjoying this community site. Thanks
for so many wonderful memories. TAGS is a regular part of
our day whenever we are home. The lessons are priceless.

R.F.D..I guess the late 60's&early 70's when this episode of M.B.R.F.D. aired
was a time when Hollywood was trying to be more socially aware.Having almost
all of the TAGS episodes I do realize that African Americans are mostly in the
backup scenery of TAGS.If anyone out there knows if any black actors ,during
TAGS 8 year run had any speaking parts let me know.I can't recall any.Mark

On the subject of Southern accents, one thing that
always bothered me on TAGS was the reality of the
characters not having those accents. If I'm not
mistaken, North Carolina is considered to be in The
South. Obviously, Andy used one, and it was
especially strong early in the series. Gomer, Ernest
T., Goober and a few others also had noticable
accents. Barney's and Aunt Bee's were barely
noticeable. Howard Sprague supposedly grew up in
Mayberry but he didn't have an accent. All of the law
enforcement characters throughout the County didn't
have accents. Floyd, Emmett and John Masters didn't
either. I guess one can use the excuse that perhaps a
lot of the characters were transplants from the North
and West, but that's a bit of a cop-out. Anyway, I
hope I didn't violate the Golden Rule but I had a
hankerin' to get it off my mind.

Since we're picking out certain types of people on
TAGS, here's my list of "hyphenated" Americans and
"foreigners" that I remember appearing on TAGS, as
well as references to certain types of folks and
nations.
1) Rockne Tarkington - African-American (colorized
era)
2) Aunt Bee's restaurant workers - Asian-American
(colorized era)
4) Sam's Italian Army buddy & family -
European-American (colorized era)
5) Barney's Judo instructor, Mr. Hisomoto -
Asian-American (b&w era)
6) 1 reference to S. America - Andy's ill fated job -
Hispanic (b&w era)
7) Gypsies - Eastern European-American (colorized
era)
8) Chief Strongbow - Native-American (though he was
Anglo, with dark face paint (colorized era)
9) Several extras in the background -
African-American (colorized & b&w eras)
10) Reference to Hugo Hoppflasch (German soldier) -
European-American (b&w era)
11) Malcolm Merriwether - European-American
(colorized & b&w era)
12) Ernest T. Bass - "Irishter"- American (colorized
& b&w eras)
13) Andy & Barney also referred to the "King of
England" and the "old country"
14) The "Muslim" who bought hooch to celebrate
Mohammed's birthday.
Being an ex-Navy Seabee Gulf War vet., I was wondering
how many references to the military were mentioned?
I'm sure it's been done before, but here goes:
1) Andy said he'd contact the Secy. of the Navy on
Opie's behalf.
2) Ernest T. tried to join the Army.
3) Dud Wash was in the Army.
4) Barney was at library on Staten Island during
WWII.
5) William Schallert's character was in the Army in
Korea.
6) The Milo Boys, Burt? and someone else, in the
sidecar episode. (leaving the motorcycle at the Nat.
Guard Armory.
7) Several references to Gen. Lee, "Yankees" and
other Civil War references. The "War of Northern
Aggression". ("We're still holdin' on to Richmond",
during the Loaded Goat episode).
8) Andy's references to Benedict Arnold and several
other Rev. War combatants.
9) Gomer and the United States Marine Corps.....er,
um Corpse.
10) Seth Taylor fought the Indians, or actually got
tipsy with them.
11) Hugo Hoppflasch, (though he saw the light and
later joined the winning team).
12) Wasn't Andy over there during WWII?
13) Andy's reference to some lady singin' to the
boys, when they returned home from the war....though
he thought the boys had already been through enough.
14) The reference to my favorite President, Teddy
Roosevelt's group, the Rough Riders, when Andy was
trying to sell the cannon.
15) Andy & Barney were in the Air Force......ooops,
that was No Time for sergeants!
Any others?
