Baron Manfred Von Richtoven (sp?) was the famous Red Baron of WW1, a
German flying ace and nemesis of Snoopy. His Fokker tri-plane was painted
bright red so his enemies would have no trouble spotting him if they wanted a
fight.

I got this one, guys! The reference is to the German WWI flying ace, Baron
von Richtofen. Andy's "Baron von Rick-toven" is in reference to the helmet,
goggles, and gloves which are very similar to the gear worn by early fighter
pilots.

Manfred Von Rictoven was a war war 1 flying ace for germany better known as
"The Red Barron". Andy called Barney that because of all the Garb he was
wearing when he had that motorcikle as they called it.

Hey Bighead in Dee-Troit, that one has been mentioned, but its worth another
snicker. The remaining "rumored dead, or fooled dead" I was looking for
were.

Andy and Barney, who were thought to have blown up with Jimmy the Goat.
This may be in the epilogue so those without TVland may not have seen.
Mayor Stoner and Jimmy's owner hear as explosion as the start dynamiting
again. They think Jimmy and the guys have blown up. (someone did mention
Jimmy-but not Andy and Barney). Mayor Stoner is extolling their praises in
the courthouse as they enter from the back door and listen.

Rafe Hollister...When he won't take his shot, Andy tells him how great his
funeral will be, and how he'll be a great dead hero. He goes on about the
funeral until Rafe proclaims he'd rather me a live me than a dead hero.

Kelly Adamson asked about Baron von Riptoven.

He's name was Rittmeister Manfred Albrect Freiherr von Richthofen.
Also known as the Red Baron, World War I, Flying Ace.
I found this information out from www.briggsenterprises.com/bluemax .

I guess the reason Andy said Barney looked like the Baron is because of
Barney's outfit.
The hat, goggles, jacket and joddhoppers, Barney was wearing looks like the
picture of
the Baron on the website.

You know Snoopy, from "Peanuts" fame, fought the Red Baron, from the top of
his dog-house.
I think this scene is from "The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown", also from
different cartoon strips.

I've noticed...like in the episode when Otis gets a car....Andy agrees to
stay overnight at the jail...while Barney goes home. Other episodes when
"Otis gets a snoot-full..." don't seem to require supervision. Once he
had to let Andy and Barney in the courthouse when they forgot their key.
Just wonderin......sometimes you gotta watch him....or he may come in on a

Why of course there is no comparison between Ernest T Bass and Ernest P.
Worrell "Jim Varney"
We all know Howard Morris is the real Ernest T but I was doing some real
thinking on the matter and wondered how the character Ernest P. Worrell
evolved. Ernest Goes To Camp, 'Goes To Jail My favorite'
Ernest....................
My sister in-law went to high school with Jim Varney as he was from
Lexington KY and was quite an actor. Now I'm sure that this character was
taken from the Ernest T Bass since all similarities but it almost seems like
the creater of Ernest T Bass would of received royalties of some sort
because of the similarities. What do you all think?

I'm sure I won't be the first one to send this answer in, but here goes:

"Who is Baron Von Riptoven? Andy refers to barney as baron von riptoven
when barney comes in the court house with his sidecar gear on."

Andy's referring to Baron Manfred von Richthofen, better known as The Red
Baron. He was the leading ace of WWI. (For more info, go to
http://www.allstar.fiu.edu/aerojava/richthofen.htm).

Now, for my question:

In that same episode (Barney's Sidecar), in the very beginning Andy and
Barney are in the courthouse discussing the need (or lack thereof) of
another car. Andy says something about they don't have the money. Barney
then says that police departments get the least funds, but it's "Thank you,
Johnny Steptoe when the guns begin to blaze." Who's Johnny Steptoe?

Had to share this story. My father-in-law does not have a name only initials.
All

Well, when he had to sign up for unemployment one time he listed as follows
L (only) T (only)

called Lonely Tonely.
This is a true story and we have had a lot of laughs over the years with it.

I believe Baron Von Riptoven refers to the famous German flying Ace
commonly called THE RED BARON.

Also, I thought we'd all like to remember another TAGS alum who
passed away Monday. George Nader played the new doctor in town who
inadvertently leads to Ellie and Andy's almost engagement. He also
told Barney, after wrapping his arm to take Barn's pulse, "I've
never been able to get it around someone's arm so many times."
Nadar was also an accomplished film and TV star as well as
novelist. Although I've only seen his TAGS performance and he
appeared only once, he's an important part of my Mayberry
experience.

Jason Donner

"What do you think would be a good length of engagement, Sheriff?
Five years?" a Nadar line from the show, really witty and
well-played

About the one liner from Ernest T.,from the episode
where he wanted the uniform;he was talking about the

all the girls making such a fuss over him.I'm not sure
of the spelling but Ernest said,"Gelsey, walk with
me-Gelsey dance with me-Gelsey kiss my mouth" don't
seem like it sounded like "jailsick".Don't want to
make a moulage out of it but did want to mention it.

Burt Mustin's last appearance was in the TV show called PHYLLIS starring Cloris
Leachman... a spinoff of THE MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW.

He played Arthur Lanson opposite Judith Lowry as Mother Dexter... the final
episode they were both in was where they finally married... both passed away a
short time after the filming and both before the episode aired... Judith first
then Burt.

There's a lil more trivia on Burt.

Can't help being amused when us folks get to focusing on "inconsistencies"
in the episodes.

As I understand it, the writers, directors, and producers of the show never
paid a lot of attention to getting things to "exactly match." What they
were going for was a "honest feel" of how people acted and reacted in all
the situations that were presented.

>From that perspective, each episode is "true" to the characters and
"atmosphere" of the show.

As a native of the same small hometown, during the same era as Andy, I can
attest that the Mount Airy "homefolks" lived in a somewhat "fluid" world
when it came to how they "interpreted" things. I remember that my Uncle
Grady had been in the war to end all
wars - (World War I) and told me a bunch of very interesting stories about
his exploits during those years.

However, my mother complained bitterly that Uncle Grady was "exaggerating,"
even "lying" about events. My grandfather, Judge Creed, would smile and
say, "Don't worry - it's as true as it needs to be!"

Barney, Gomer, Goober, Floyd all act and speak in a way that is "as true as
it needs to be," and all of the world is blessed as a result.

Blessings To All The Wonderful Fans! - Let's Hear It For Mayberry!!

I haven't seen this episode in a while but I think I remember Gomer pulling
the gunport open (outward) and putting the nozzle in. Gun ports open outward
only for that very reason, and I don't think you can just walk up and pull one
open like Gomer did,
