Have you noticed that when we sit around and rate favorite shows, the ones
we put high on the list have something to teach us? Man in A Hurry, Opie
the Birdman, Opie's Charity and the like all are teaching a character (and
us) something. I group these types of episodes as lesson episodes while
there are others which are just pure comedy episodes. Let's see - Goober
Takes a Car Apart and The Loaded Goat are just trying to make us laugh.
These pure comedy episode, although good, don't make it to the top of the
list.

Since I got so many replies to the "Mr. Marconi/Mark Harney" question, I
thought I'd
ask 1 more that's been buggin' me...I guess I'm not very good at history
(maybe I should
grow me a beard). Anyways, Who is Baron Von Riptoven? Andy refers to
barney as
baron von riptoven when barney comes in the court house with his sidecar
gear on.

Burt Mustin died on January 29, 1977, a couple of weeks or so shy of what
would have been his 92nd birthday. His list of TV guest appearances on the
IMdB is one of the longest you will find, spanning everything from "The Lone
Ranger" to "All in the Family" and includes no less than 10 appearances on
TAGS.

Subject: Best Episode???

I know many members here LOVE "Man in a Hurry," and I like it too. But I
wouldn't vote it as best. It would make the "Top Ten," but it wouldn't make
my #1 spot. That episode is too much about Malcom Tucker and doesn't
feature the regular characters nearly as much as many others in the Top Ten.
Sure, Robert Emhardt did an outstanding job portraying Mr. Tucker -- no
debate about that. And the TAGS characters played off him very well. But
their roles were very much "supporting characters" in that episode. The
spotlight wasn't on them. The essence of Mayberry was communicated well in
that episode, but it's communicated well, and usually more subtly, in any
episode that would make the Top Ten.

I think that as a stand-alone episode, it wouldn't make the Top Ten to a
person new to watching TAGS. It's only a favorite to TAGS fans because we
already KNOW the show's characters so well. Tucker offers an interesting
contrast to what we're used to seeing and hearing, and he challenges what we
already like about Mayberry. So we feel good when he's "won over" and
becomes "one of us."

What did those folks think the store was heated by, COAL?

The other thing I didn't understand about the way Gomer was
able to splash Barney is why would the armored car have
gunports that could be pushed "inward" I've never tested
one of those gold trucks but it would seem that it would be
very dangerous if somebody could walk up with any kind of an
old roscoe, gat, rod, blue steel baby, little persuader, or
even a gun and poke it INTO the dang thing.

Burt Mustin died? You're kiddin'! I just
saw the old guy on Leave It to Beaver--
and several OTHER shows... I'll admit the
COLOR was outta his face, but those WERE
mostly Black and White shows!

Burt Mustin, Otis, Lucy, "Granny", and
several other "c-h-a-r-a-c-t-e-r-s" will
not die as you and I will... THEY'll
live F-O-R-E-V-E-R!

So there! And I'm not gonna take it back!

You read the post wrong. "Man in a Hurry" is by far
my favorite TAGS. I stated it was strange how they
left it off the Super Bowl mini-marathon, as well as
several others classics, since they were voted on by
TVLand viewers. I don't analyze episodes from such a
philosophical/sociological/religious angle, but I
think the writing, directing, and acting during "Man
in a Hurry" were as close to perfection as the medium
of television has ever come. Great show. I
especially love the way you stated that this was
Gomer's first appearance on TAGS, which meant there
were 82 episodes to go before color entered the scene.

Sorry if you interpreted it wrong.

Hey Everyone! Someone mentioned the gas spilling on Barney's pants in the
gold truck episode; in that same episode Barney's raincoat is dry when he is
in the hotel but has obvious water spots when he comes out and tells the two
boys " there ain't no gold and I don't want you hanging around when that
truck comes through here neither!!!" Lots of little glitches in this
episode... all the more enjoyable cause this is Mayberry! MER

Great website Dapper Dan!!!!! I also love the original Star Trek series, but
don't get to see it very often. Does any cable channel show it on a regular
schedule?

This is just from memory, but the area around the Bartlett Stable looks a
bit like the spot where Malcolm Merriweather was hit by the pickup truck.
Can any of the trained noticers out there either confirm or deny this?

For those of you who who didn't bother when Dan posted it, it's really worth
the look. He has about 6 pages of quality shots of 40 Acres.
