Well, off hand the first foreign countries that come to mind are Mexico (ref.
to quickie Mexican divorce and Aunt Bees trip), Saudi Arabia (3 wishes for
Opie), Canada ("he's making for Canada" in the episode where Barney tries to
get subliminal info from Otis about the whereabouts of a still, I think when
Gomer went in the Marines he mentions that he may get to go to China and
Japan, and the ones already mentioned (Germany {Hugo Hotflash}, England {the
Old country, Malcom Merriwether}). Africa was mentioned ("What was the
Geographic about?..Africa..) but thats a continent (like South America, Aunt
bee and Opie "don't speak a word of South American") so I guess it doesn't
count. What other countries are mentioned?

I do, however, envision this one taking place...
"So anyway, I told Sarah to get me Floyd..."
"Sarah? Who's Sarah?"
"Oh she's the operator for the local phone service. Sweet lady, teaches
Sunday school, raises petunias. This is funny--she doesn't want anyone to
know it but she takes a pinch of snuff every now and then. Great lady."
"Holy cow, one of those party lines, you even know the operator! Man, I love
small towns!"

Keep in mind Ed loved Mayberry so much he also could have pumped his buddy
for more info...

As a boy growing up in Oklahoma, I remember my grandparents and my mother
saying the same phrase. I always understood it to mean bascially the same as
"way to go", which means good job.....and we all need to hear that from time
to time.

Speaking of a 'Mayberry moment'; I watched Gunsmoke
last evening, 'The Hiders' episode. Festus was
crawling around in the mercantile at night looking for
a burglar.

Remember Barn' duck-wadling inside Weavers Dept. store
at night looking for the intruder? I forget the
episode title, but the memory of Barn' is vivid!

Subject: Questionable goodbyes - Sidecar Episode
Date: Tue, 02 Apr 2002 15:23:41 +0000

I've seen this episode dozens of times, of course, but can never "catch"
the words of Andy and Opie in the beginning of the episode. Andy walks
into the courthouse and Opie is using his new wood-burning set. When
Opie leaves the courthouse, he says something like "ibesenia" and Andy
replies "seeyasumoa." I know this sounds strange. I've always thought
Opie says "I'll be seeing ya" and Andy says "See you some more" or
something like that. But when I hear it again, I'm not so sure. Am I
hearing things or has anyone else questioned these goodbyes? Thanks to
all.

You are correct. That was the first time we ever saw Johnny Paul, but it
wasn't Keith playing him in that episode. The blonde boy spoke no lines, so
he was not given screen credit. Richard Keith (real name: Keith
Thibodeaux) assumed the role two episodes later, in "One-Punch Opie."

(de-lurking...)

I think what he's saying is "that's the time," kinda like "there you go," or
"now you're talkin." It sounds to my ear like an Andy Griffith-ism. Or
maybe a Mt. Airy-ism. Or a Blue Ridge Mountain-ism.

I just bought Alan Rafkin's book, "Cue the Bunny on the Rainbow." Has
anybody read it? It's a little salty. But he singles out TAGS as his
favorite show to direct, and singles out TAGS actors as the warmest and
nicest to be around. I wasn't a bit surprised.

Peace out,

Jason

I think it's great having a positive place like this to talk and just hang out
on the 'front porch'. :0) Does anyone know if Don Knotts' Universal movies
from the 60s ever had album soundtracks released? I've never seen one.
Thanks - lots o' luck to you an yers, Louis

You know, Charlie, I definitely think that someone
from Mayberry would tell about their phone operator
who dips snuff. Don't forget, now, that Mayberry was
a small town and (speaking as a "small-towner") I can
attest that those are exactly the kinds of things
people from small towns talk about. Remember, Gomer
told Andy and Barney about someone sneaking out behind
a building to take a pinch of snuff, which he saw
while he was staked out on top of the courthouse.

Somebody recently asked in the Digest about a new CD from Doug Dillard.
Actually, it's his classic "Banjo" album that has been re-released on CD for
the first time in a few years. His banjo instruction book (another classic)
has also been re-released.

Doug now has a Web site as well:

that it is a way of expressing encouragement and approval, kind of like

trying to teach a child to hit a baseball and the child succeeds, the
parent would say "That's a

Howdy Everybody,

I was watching the episode last night where "Ron
Bailey/Bill Bixby" ran the farmer off the road and
Andy arrested him for leaving the scene of a crime.
Anyway I got "tickled" when he was listening to his
radio and dancing in his cell. Barney, of course with
his pj's buttoned all the way up to his neck, came out
of the backroom and told him to knock it off. (Otis
is a scream in this episode too!) Anyway, I got to
thinking about all the different times there were
funny "dance scenes" on TAGS and wondered if anyone
could think of any others.

1. Ron Bailey in his cell with the transistor radio.
2. Andy dancing with the very short blonde when Helen
was mad at him. (HA! HA! the look on Andy's face)
3. Howard and Betty Parker when Howard was supposed to
be tutoring her brother Tommy.
4. Andy and Helen dancing at Opies "first dance."
5. Gomer and Mary Grace at Thelma Lou's ...she's
nice..real nice..
6. Howard's bachelor party when Helen was the only
lady present.... Go Man go..!
7. Barney and Andy dancing in the courthouse, the
Taylor's living room etc. with the "fun girls".

Can anyone think of any others??

Andy:...do you always drive around with celery in your
back seat?....Ron Bailey: "I happen to like celery!"

Subject: Bread and butter
Date: Tue, 2 Apr 2002 21:46:21 -0500

Dear Friends: I was very interested to read what Ted had to say about "bread
and butter":
''My experience is with law enforcement types saying
'bread and butter' to communicate. It keeps them in
touch with one another, while out of eyeshot of one another."
I have never heard of this explanation before. I used it in my recent email
because it is an expression I grew up with and use even today on a regular
basis. I know the explanation of what it means is in our FAQs, but just to
remind people of its most common use, it is a superstitious expression used by
two friends when one goes on one side of a solid object (like a tree) and one
goes on the other side. The belief I grew up with was that if you didn't say
"bread and butter" real fast, something would destroy your friendship. And,
the reason for the use of "bread and butter" in particular is because once you
have spread butter on bread, you can never entirely remove it.
I spent most of my growing up years in small town/rural Tennessee and small
town/rural Alabama. I can really empathize with Barney about all his
superstitions as I have never been able to completely get over many of those I
learned as a child. I still remember how traumatic it was for me the first
time I "broke the chain" of a chain letter!
Where's a red-haired man when you need him?!!
