>>>Who in the heck is Hugo Hotflash? I can't for the life of me place that
name.<<
Mike, I used that name in my question about countries. Remember when Barney
was training Gomer to be a Deputy? He taught him to polish the back of his
shoes, because that's the last thing people see when you're marching off to
war. Barney learned that from an old German Solder, Hugo Hotflach.
>>>>Well, off hand the first foreign countries that come to mind are Mexico
(...), Saudi Arabia (3 wishes for Opie), Canada ..., I think when Gomer went
in the Marines he mentions that he may get to go to China and Japan, and the
ones already mentioned (Germany {Hugo Hotflash}, England {the Old country,
Malcom Merriwether}). Africa was mentioned ("What was the Geographic
about?..Africa..) but that's a continent (like South America, Aunt Bee and
Opie "don't speak a word of South American") so I guess it doesn't count.
What other countries are mentioned?<<<<
If you saw Bradford Taylor (Jack Albertson)on TVLand last night as the phony
worldly entrepreneur, we heard Mozambique, Bangladesh, Australia, and
Brazil mentioned (As well as Mexico again) as sites of his business
activities (as well as "the far east"). In the color episode featuring the
author who traveled South America (who thinks Aunt Bee is a dead ringer for
his late wife Ethel) Columbia and Ecuador are mentioned. (there may be
more). OK there should be a few more countries..any you can think of??

Watching Howard on the beach last night when the little boy Sebastian comes
up with a mess of fish slung over his shoulder. Never paid much attention
before, but you can really tell they're prop fish.

>>>One of the best things about our Mayberry is 'no sales tax'. When Opie
goes to the bakery to buy a cake for $1, it costs $1. ("Don't you have a
cake with a dent in it?")
Well, there is another episode in which a customer in a different
establishment is charged sales tax (more on this in a minute). Perhaps food
isn't taxed, but other goods are. Or, maybe the bakery has already figured
the tax into their retail prices, or maybe Millie just let it go that time
since she was trying to get rid of Opie.
Trivia time! (this is a toughie): What is the sales tax rate in Mayberry?

There's a recipe for that very pie on page 202 of "Aunt Bee's Delightful
Desserts." The one in the book is sort of a creamy cheesecake; however, the
recipe on the web site Allan mentioned is quite different.
For you new arrivals in town, there are three Mayberry cookbooks (available
at Weaver's) and they're all terrific. Even if you don't ever plan to
prepare a single recipe, they're still a lot of fun to read, and they're
packed with great photos from the show, too.

In response to Ron Browns question about Goobers way of saying envelopes,
it must be an old North Carolina thing. My grandparents always pronounced
it "N-VELLUPS". For a long time I thought that was the way it was
supposed to be pronounced. Funny how different parts of the country say
things differently

Hi fans!
I was watching the episode last night where Howard and Millie has taken the
train to Wheeling to meet Millie's parents. I have wondered this before so
thought I would get some more ideas on the subject, is that Millie's parents
and grandparents or aunt and uncle? I don't believe they have ever said but
the couple on the left looks too young to be great-grandparents. Maybe Millie
has an extended family like so many today. Oh well, it just crossed my mind.

Subject: Mt Airy program on UNC-TV
Date: Thu, 04 Apr 2002 13:25:15 -0500
It's not posted on their website yet, but UNC-TV series "North Carolina Now"
is focusing on Mt Airy on Tuesday, April 9 at 7:30PM. At least some of this
show was filmed the weekend of the "Love Letters" performance and should
feature both Howard Morris and Betty Lynn. My seven year-old son and I
drove to Mt Airy that Saturday (Feb 9th?) to meet Thelma Lou and Ernest T.
and get their autographs at the Main Oak Emporium. We made enough of a
commotion with the 5 Bricks that we brought to have Mr. Morris autograph
that the TV crew asked to interview us in front of the Main Oak Emporium.
They took our name and address and promised to send us a postcard to let us
know when the show would air. After checking our mailbox daily for 2
months, the card finally arrived.
We're likely to have ended up on the cutting room floor, and maybe I'll be
lucky if we do - I had an embarrassing on-camera moment. After explaining
explaining how much I enjoyed the show due to it's family values, the
interviewer asked who I would most like to be in Mayberry. I hadn't
expected this question, and with little thought I said I would like to be
able to spend a lot of time around the courthouse with Andy and Barney and
the first name that popped in to my head was Otis. After the interview I
got to thinking....family values & Otis? Woops!
Anyway - Enjoy the show! (UNC-TV website also notes that schedules are
subject to change - so check it regularly if you plan to watch)
Gomer, that was stupid!
Wadnit though?

Howard McNear was never better than in the "Convicts at Large" episode,
where he called Barney "Al," tapped his foot to the music and ate a banana
when Barney tried to dance "Big Maude" out the door, and was furious when
the hamburgers burned. The episode when Barney ressurected the fight
bewteen Floyd and Mr. Foley was another classic. I also enjoyed the episode
when Floyd brought the bookie in as a second chair barber. Howard McNear
was one of a kind, no doubt about it. When barney lined up the deputies
when the gold truck came through Mayberry, wasn't Floyd 'one" or "three?"
Best of luck to you and yours.

In the south. I've grown up hearing people say envelopes like that, although I
don't say it that
way myself.
I think that there was some quite "scandalous" dancing going on when the
seniors at the local high
school did their play. The principal looked like he was going to blow a
gasket. But then they
reminded him of the scandalous dancing he probably did in his day - like the
Charleston. Miss Helen
sure did take up for those kids in that episode, which is another reason I like
her. I don't know
if anyone mentioned that one or not. Sorry if I'm repeating! :)

I was watching TAGAS last night ( I don't remember the name of the episode)
where Bee's cousin was coming to see her. ( The one who is a semi-bum) and I
heard her telling that his father and her father were brothers....Now, his
last name was Taylor, so that would mean that Aunt Bee's maiden name would be
Taylor. Or am I assuming too much? Someone let me know your thoughts.
Also, I'm not much of a trained noticer, but one thing I have always noticed
is in the Pickle episode when Barney and Andy are transferring Aunt Bee's (bad
old home) pickles with the store bought pickles, it seems to me they would
have placed all the home pickles in the store jars. The thing that gets me is
when Barney gives the motorist the safe driving award, the pickles are in a
home canning jar. Am I assuming too much again? Let me know your thoughts on
the matter.

Subject: Columbia House Videos
Date: Thu, 4 Apr 2002 20:04:49 -0600
I just had to rant on a bit about the Columbia house vides again.
I had thought my Sterling DVD's of TAGS were complete episodes but boy was I
wrong.
Even tho they do contain epilogs they are not complete. Both my DVD and the
first Columbia
House video I got contained the episode Dogs, Dogs, Dogs and I actually got to
see stuff in
this episode that has probably has not been seen for years now. In the episode
after Andy
brings in Otis's breakfast and Barney shows up, Both Barney and Otis get in an
argument
about Otis's breakfast's coming out of Andys pocket. They carry on a bit till
Andy shuts them up and
Then Opie arrives with the first dog. After Opie leaves again Otis and Barn
start in again till Andy
shushs them up again. Later in the episode Andy, Barn, and Otis are leaving
the jail and Andy asks
Otis if he wants to go get a soda with them and Otis says soda is bad for his
liver. While this joke was
funny on its own it is even funnier after seeing the parts that had been cut
out earlier. I think Columbia
House has done a fine job of transfering the show to Video, my only complaint
is that I wish they would
eventually put it on DVD. The other wierd thing I noticed is that on the
Sterling DVD's you can see more of a scene
in the episodes. Its not much but The Columbia House videos look like they are
zoomed in slightly compared
to the ones on the DVD that I have. I really noticed it right off cause the
people in the show all look closer
than I am used to seeing them. Also during the Intro on the DVD I can see
almost the entire broken looking tree on the left at the very
start and on the Columbia house tape all you can see is the very end of the
branch of this tree. Its not a lot
of difference but it makes me wonder are there different source tapes for TAGS
and were they framed differently or is this
just the result of they way Columbia House made the tapes themselves?
Wow I dont think I've ever typed an email this long in my life. lol
