Subject: Mayberry Hockey

With the Carolina Hurricanes in hockey's Stanley Cup Finals, the Mayberry
references are getting pretty common.

Detroit newspaper headline - "Aunt Bee and Opie meet Hockeytown"

Raleigh newspaper subheading - "Boys from 'Mayberry' stun Red Wings in Game
1"

Barry Melrose's prediction on ESPN "If the Canes take the series to 5 games,
Barney Fife will be the next director of the FBI."

As long as it is in good fun, it is nice to live in an area that the hockey
community considers Mayberry!

Hi all....

If you really want to figure out who Johnny Coons was on TAGS, you might want
to check out the old movie "Tell Them Willie Boy is Here". It starred Robert
Redford, Katherine Ross and Robert Blake.

According to the IMDB website, he played an "uncredited' part as a clerk. Now
an astute observer might be able to pick out that part and match a face to a
TAGS episode he was featured in. They don't mention TAGS on the IMDB website
though.

Hey Paul, do you feel up to it????

Hey I don't know much about DT brother. However, Danny was the son
of Lebanese immigrants and therefore His name is not Hebrew.. I
believe his birth mane was Jahoob . He was known as" Jake" to
most.No matter he was a great performer and hummanitarian.
James Arness was James Aurness then it was changed to Arness. His
brother took the name Graves . I think that Graves is somehow
 connected to the name Aurness.
Anyway I think that Andy , Matt, Barney & Festus woulda made a
great Team . Can you imagine Barn trying to talk to Doc.or Miss
    Kitty??

Hi again....

Just a side note to the Johnny Coons investigation....He did the voice of Heap
O'Calorie on The Dick Tracy Show in 1961 with another Mayberry alumni.
Everett Sloane (aka Jubal Foster), who wrote the words to "The Fishin' Hole"
did the voice of Dick Tracy.

Another bit of trivia to file away....

As someone who lives in North Carolina AND loves the Andy show, of course I
was interested in the headline in
the Detroit paper BEFORE the opening of the Red Wings-Hurricanes
championship series. The headline said,
"Aunt Bea and Opie, meet Hockey town." WELL, judging from the looks on the
fans' faces AFTER the Hurricanes
won Game 1, it looks like Barney locked up the entire city.

I heard from another TAGS fan that Howard/Jack Dodson went on to become a

of Figaro (among other operas) and that he was also became a pro bowler. I,
also heard that Frances became a marriage counselor. Does anyone have any
knowledge of any of this stuff?

>>>Well, remember when Mr. Tucker wanted to use the phone but the two
sisters had the line tied up all day. How can that be? Did that mean that
NOBODY in town could use the phone. That would be like a party line to
everyone. Maybe I don't know much about the phone lines back then. Is
there something I don't know?<<<

Hey Susan. I work for a phone company, but that was before my era. Here is
my theory. It's conceivable that the Mayberry switchboard only had one line
to the world outside of Mayberry. So theoretically, folks could still make
local calls while that one Long Distance line was tied up. Mr. Tucker
obviously would have wanted to make a Long Distance Call. Assuming that one
of the sisters lived in Mayberry..and the other elsewhere, so they would tie
up that "outside" line...To make it a better story though...the Party Line
effect was employed so Mr. Tucker could hear that they were talking about
feet falling asleep.
I think its also interesting that most of the time when someone is
on the phone..you just hear one side of the conversation, and do not hear
the other voice. One exception I can think of off-hand is when Barney is a
Realtor. At the end of the show when Andy puts the receiver down, you can
hear Barney's voice continue to talk. Occasionally they show both sides
alternately as in "Andy, this is Aunt Bee calling from Mount Pilot" and
when Andy calls another Sheriff about the free-loading drifter, Mr. Wheeler.
There are many more that use this technique..but many that just show one
side.

>>>As far as I know, nobody has been able to figure out who is being
referenced
in the credits by Johnny Coons.<<<

For newcomers, the credits for "Goober takes a car apart" lists Johnny Coons
as "man #2" For a long time, we confused that name with Tom Jacobs,
character actor. Tom (Danny Thomas' brother) is the one who says "How'd he
do it Sheriff?"

Checking the internet there are a couple of other Johnny Coons references.
One is a Chicago area Local Cartoon show host from the 50's actually known
as Uncle Johnny Coons. There is also a Johnny Coons in the Movie "Tell Them
Willie Boy is Here" playing the role of "clerk" (that could be our Johnny
with such a vague reference??)

If you can figure out who Johnny is...you should take on the Schwamp case
(Becker case is already solved) Who is the actor who played Mr.
Scwamp??..seen in several episodes with a bad hair piece.

>>>I wonder how many episodes the Darlings were in and when was the last

            Mike in Wichita.................STANDBY CYMBALIST
>>>

The Darling family appears in six episodes:

The Darlings are Coming
Mountain Wedding
Divorce Mountain Style
Briscoe Declares for Aunt Bee
The Darling Baby
The Darling Fortune

Every one of these stories concerns the wedding plans of one or more members
of the Darling family, so after six episodes the plots more or less dried
up. Same goes for Ernest T. Bass -- every one of his episodes has something
to do with his wanting to attract a mate.

Otis appears in only two color episodes: "Otis the Artist" and "Otis the
Deputy." At that time (the sixth season) the producers were forced to
eliminate the character, because one of the "big wigs" at GF was an
alcoholic who didn't want to a see a drunk on TV, no matter how harmless and
lovable the character was. This was a real shame. It seems to me it would
have made much more sense to write an episode in which Otis quits drinking
for good; then they could have kept Hal Smith on as a regular cast member.

We had a local switchboard in the town where I grew up. In reply to Susan's
question about the sisters tying up all the phones in Mayberry on Sunday
afternoon: that wouldn't happen. Phone customers could either have private
lines, 2-party lines, 3-party lines, etc. A private line cost the most and
is like today's phone lines where only one person has access to that line.
Usually businesses bought private lines. 2-party lines were available to
two customers at the same time. So they had to share that line. If one
customer was using the line and the other customer picked up the phone, he
could hear the first person talking. This was called "rubbering". Now it's
called eavesdropping. 3-party lines were for three customers.

So the sisters in the "Man In A Hurry" episode were on the same party line
as the Taylors. Those on other party lines could still make calls.

Now isn't that just what you would expect in cyber-Mayberry?! Someone went
to the trouble to research my question and came up with the answer! Thank
you, "Dawn in Kansas" for finding out that $50.00 in 1964 would be $278.26
in 2001! When Opie found that $50 in cash in a "man's purse" at the side of
the road, he INDEED found enough to buy himself a whole slew of things -- a
second Christmas!
Now we can understand why he came running into the Sheriff's office all out
of breath in excitement about his "find!"

Aren't cha kind, Dawn, aren't cha kind!

Now maybe I can be a little "pushy" by re-asking my second question: In
which B&W episode's epilog did Barney sing "Oh My Barney?" (Andy chimed in
with a couplet at the end that made Barney steam.)

I KNOW a bunch of you out there know the answer to this. Come on and BE
somebody.

Hello Folks,

That is an interesting phone question that Susan brought up. That means that
anyone could have listened in on Barney and Juanita... "cock-a-doodle-doo".
It would have made for an interesting plot too - Barney listening in on
someone's conversation, only getting part of it, and then making a big
moulage out of the situation. Was there any other episode where someone
heard someone else's phone conversation??
