I went to the Google search engine, typed in Johnny Coons, hit the Google
Search button and found these listed as sites:
http://www.tvparty.com/lostchicago2.html Ironically, it was written by
Tom Jacobs.
http://www.chicagotelevision.com/uncle.htm This site is a short bio
on Johnny Coons, that has him as being born in LEBANON, Indiana.
Is there more than one Johnny Coons floating around out there? Neither one
of these sites list TAGS in his credits, just a lot of local Chicago TV.

Jeff, the book is "TV Sets: Fantasy Blueprints of Classic TV Homes" by Mark

Have been a New York Ranger fan since I attended my first game at age 6.
Since my rangers failed to make the playoffs, I have been rooting for the
Hurricanes since they beat the Devils! What a Cinderella Story! Go Canes! My
daughter is a media consultant for the NHL & was on the ice last year when
Bourke hoisted the cup. She is also a die-hard TAGS fan & her co-workers call
her Aunt Bee cause she is always looking after the players & their families!
I would also be happy to pay for a tape of the commercials...
God Bless & have a Mayberry Day!

Sad to make this true confession - but I missed that AG episode because I was

but she doesn't gamble. Even though I didn't "blow a couple of Cs" , the
$25 I lost was painful.

When Otis had to stay at Andy's house to keep him away from the moonshiners
Andy arrested, did he not tell Aunt Bea/Bee (AKA "Typhoid Mary") that he
would quit drinking because of the way she worked him at the house. She
worked Otis unmercifully and he said he would do anything not to go back
there again. Comments?

Subject: Party lines
Someone asked about party lines in Mayberry. Years ago, when i lived in
a small town in Ohio, our phone had a party line. If memory serves me
right, there were 3 or for people on our line who were probably close
neighbors. When the phone rang, it would ring the number of rings for
which party it as for, & then only the people of that residence was
supposed to pick up the receiver. When a person wanted to make a call,
you had to listen & if someone was talking, then you ere supposed to
quietly put the receiver back on what was called on the old fashioned
phones, its cradle. It could be very annoying if one had a very
important call to make, to have to wait for awhile to give the other
person a chance to finish their call before picking up the receiver to
try again. People were expected to be courteous & not listen in on the
other person's call, but I'm sure there were those nosy folks who
listened. I can sympathise with Mr Tucker who was impatient hearing the
unimportant chit chat going on with the two sisters.

Now I have one question. What did Thelma Lou do for a living? I heard
mention of getting back to the office in one episode. Any one know?

Sorry Charlie, that was Bob McQuain. He, like Tom Jacobs, is a well-known

except perhaps Mary Lansing...even more than Allen Melvin.
Here is my "extra" observation for today. The actress that played Lucy
Matthews in "Stranger in Town" (Ed Sawyer wanted to "call on her")episode
12 was not credited with any other TAGS episodes. Was she, however, in the
tour group that Floyd brought into the Courthouse to see Andy and Barney
when they were being recognized for Mayberry's (supposed)low crime rate??
----
The other day someone listed Dukes of Hazzard/TAGS connections and I forgot
to comment that they left off one of the most famous...Uncle Jessie/Briscoe
Darling's Denver Pyle.

The other day I say a guy with a sweatshirt that said "Property of Mayberry
Union High Athletic Dept." Is that a Weaver's item, or does someone know
where to find?

"Otis the Artist" was always one of my favorite episodes, even as a kid. It
just seemed so peaceful -- Otis and the mosaics. I think this episode
brought out his humanity a little more.

Thanks, Amy Wolfford, for your comments regarding Mayberry's police actions.
Over the years I've heard people make comments about Barney and Andy being a
joke, incompetent and an embarrassment.
First, it is obvious they do not watch the show based on their comments.
They have only seen bits and pieces of it. Perhaps just the promos that
TVLand shows.
Second, they obviously don't get it. TAGS is a comedy. So it is supposed
to be funny. If they want to watch a serious police TV show they can watch
Hawaii 50 or Kojak.
Third, they don't understand police work. Much time is spent by good law
enforcement personnel helping the citizens in their communities. I live in
a city of 100,000+. The Sheriff's Dept. here spends a lot of time visiting
schools and neighborhood organizations. They take care of and look out for
us in much the same way Andy and Barney did the good folks of Mayberry 40
years ago.
Finally, I have to say that we should forgive the ignorant, thoughtless
fools who don't know what they are talking about. Since they obviously have
missed out on some of the finest entertainment ever, we should explain to
them what the Mayberry story is all about.
Remember, God loves the ignorant, too.

which B&W episode's epilog did Barney sing "Oh My Barney?" (Andy chimed in
with a couplet at the end that made Barney steam.)
>>>
That's from the epilogue of episode 39, "Crime-Free Mayberry." Barney is
alone in the courthouse, seated at the typewriter with his back to the door.
He looks at the words he has just typed, and then starts singing aloud, not
realizing that Andy has silently entered the room and is standing right
behind him.
BARNEY: (singing to the tune of "Clementine")
In a jailhouse, down in Dixie, fightin' crime and riskin' life,
Dwelt a sheriff and his buddy, pistol-packin' Barney Fife.
Oh my darin', oh my darin', oh my darin' Barney Fife,
He's a deadly crime-stopper, what a copper, Barney Fife!
Then one day there came a-ridin' two bad men to rob a bank,
But Fife was tricky, a dead-eye dickie, now they're locked up in the tank.
ANDY (singing): Oh my Barney, oh my Barney, had a jail and couldn't lock
it,
Had one bullet for his pistol, had to keep it in his pocket.

Ellen, I believe that would be Episode 41: Crime-free Mayberry.
"Oh my Barney, oh my Barney, had a jail and couldn't lock it, had one bullet
for his pistol, had to keep it in his pocket."
How'd you like Andy's offer in the Quarter Mill epilogue last night to take
Barney's pants to the "Artistic Weaver's" for mending after he got his gun
caught in his underwear and shot a hole in his pants? I did not remember
seeing that particular accidental gunshot scene, so I really enjoyed it.
Thanks TVLand.

Hey Flora,
Actually, I use Netscape? I don't have any problem but I'm glad to know that
you are so I can work on it. We don't want folks having a hard time at Weaver's

Please let me know exactly what problems you're having so I can try and correct

you're having problems with any part of it....please e-mail me and let me know
so I can try to correct the problem.

"Sixteen Candles",the 1984 teen flick starring Molly Ringwald, has two minor
Mayberry bit players. Edward Andrews, who was the lecturer in 'Aunt Bee and
the Lecturer', played Molly's grandfather. Casey Adams,a.k.a. Max Showalter,
appeared in the TAGS episode 'The Horse Trader.' He played Molly's other
grandfather. Having both grandfathers who were both Mayberry visitors must
have been a real treat. In reality, Molly was born the same year 'The Andy
Griffith Show' went off the air. In this movie, Edward Andrews is guardian to
a Japanese boy played by actor Gedde Watanbe. Gedde later starred in the Ron
Howard film "Gung Ho" in 1986.

Subject: From Jim Clark: Johnny Coons Cut from Episode?
To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hey Folks,
I got this indepth study from Jim earlier today. Thanks to Jim for checking
into this for us. --Allan
-----------------
I believe Johnny Coons was completely cut from the final/broadcast version of
"Goober Takes a Car Apart." He was supposed to be "Man 2," which is a
character that is still in the revised scripts for the episode at least as
late as November 13, 1964. He was supposed to say one line: "Just gettin'
back from Mt. Pilot, Andy?"
Somewhere along the way, apparently after Coons was cast for the part, his
role was eliminated, as was the role of "Man 1," who was supposed to say a
couple of lines as Andy gets out of his car and prepares to walk into the
courthouse to see Gilly's car inside. Stanley Farrar, a familiar face in
Mayberry, was supposed to play Man 1.
I have never spotted Stanley Farrar in the small crowd of people outside the
courthouse or anywhere else in the episode and I don't see anybody who looks
like Johnny Coons. My guess is that both Man 1 and Man 2 were completely
eliminated and that the shorter version of the scene provided the opening for
the role of "Man," which gave Danny Thomas' older brother Tom his one chance
for a line and a credit on TAGS when he said: "How did they do it, Sheriff?"
Anyway, that's my take on it. I submit this theory to the boys at the lab for
further analysis.
jim
P.S. "What boys at what lab?"
