one time he got ME mixed up with Paul Mulik. 'Till he figured that I
wasn't as smart as Mulik. So....when he left....we agreed......Paul Mulik
is the SMART PAUL......I'm the DUMB PAUL....(Now if we can just find
Johnny Paul!)

I took my Grandaughter fishin' on Saturday....she won second place in the
cities annual contest! (Caught a 6 lb. catfish!) Since it was a free
fishin' day in Texas (no license required) I even fished a little.....I
left my wallet with my license in my uniform........no need to call Barney
and have him bail me out!

Hey Paul, I remember the manicurist as Ellen. I looked it up in all my
Mayberry reference books and that's what they show too. I always
remember the way she had of saying "Ellen Brown" in such a cute way.

Hi Jeff and all: Don't get me wrong..I love the black and white shows...but
at the time Desilu had at least 8 or 10 (I think they were pushing 25 or so
at their peak) shows in production at the same time and B&W was cheaper to
use and process since it was the standard of the day...also set lighting
would have changed during the shoot and colours change on outdoor scenes
from morning to afternoon etc...now it isn't uncommon to correct colour
tones on film during processing because a scene was shot at 2 or 3 different
times throughout a day...colour film was basically for movies...in 1959 NBC
and Republic started the first colour tv series BONANZA started production
and single handedly sold more colour tv sets for RCA then any other show. I
think thats why Desilu held off using colour film for so long, not enough
people owned colour tv sets, it WAS more expensive to process back then,
(notice how much more it costs to have B&W photos developed now as opposed
to colour) and they were already stretched with the amount of productions.
If you can find a copy of Desi's biography called "A Book" written by him,
its a great read... :) I particularly like seeing our Mayberry characters
on other shows in colour during the same time period Andy was still shot in
colour :) Keith

See, now that's where you'd have a problem as it had nothing to do with
the film or expense. For the first five years, Mayberry was black and
white, dontcha know?

>>>
1. Which episodes make mention of Andy's late wife? (Any color episodes?)
>>>

She is referred to (specifically) in only one episode: "Wedding Bells for
Aunt Bee." Andy is trying to explain "the marryin' kind of love" to Opie,
and the boy asks, "Did you and Mom have that kind of love?"

There are a couple of other episodes in which Andy tells Barney he misses
being married, and we also learn that Barney was Andy's best man, but in
none of those episodes is a DIRECT reference made to Opie's mother.

>>>
2. Does anyone know the history of the "There is a time, for us to wander
..." song that shows up a couple of times in the series? I would like to
know the title, an origin or writter?
>>>

The title is simply "There is a Time." It's an original Dillards tune,
written by Mitch Jayne and Rodney Dillard. It's available on some of their
CDs (check Weaver's).

>>>
Did Barney use the call "Hooty Hoo" in a TAGS episode? I know he did some
bad bird calls, but I am trying to place the "Hooty Hoo" call.
>>>

I think you're remembering a scene from an early episode of Gomer Pyle -
USMC. The early episodes emphasized the fact that Gomer was a country boy,
and they were filled with little rustic touches like that.

Gomer does demonstrate a hoot owl call in "The Rumor," but he just went
"Hoo, Hoo" in that one, not "Hooty-Hoo." In "Andy's Vacation," Gomer
suggests that he and Barney should make up some animal noises (owls and
squirrels) but Barney vetoes the idea, saying "You just yell 'Hey Barn,' and
I'll yell "Hey Gomer."

>>>How's your Golf game? Are ya up to hittin a hunderd yet?

Maybe I'm just a plain hick, but that sport has never held any appeal for
me. I'm reminded of an old BC comic strip in which one character asks
another "Let me see if I got this straight: the fewer times you hit the
ball, the better you're doing?" The second character confirms this,
prompting the first one to ask, "Then why do it at all?"

In one of the manhunt episodes Gomer tells Barney to go "hooty hoo, hooty
hoo, like and owl, and I'll go chick-a-chee, chick-a-chee like a squirrel."
Barn's deadpan answer "You say Hey Barn and I'll say Hey Gome" cracks me up
every time!

I may have fractured the dialogue a little there, but I b'lieve that's the
origin of the "hooty hoo" call.

That bird call I believe was in the episode where Barney and Gomer were out
in the woods trying to catch the convict that got away. They were just
beginning their search Gomer suggests that they use bird calls to find each
other. Barney looks at Gomer and says "You just say hey Barn "and " I'll
say hey Gomer". I hope this is right...

In this week's T.V. Guide, the cover story is on the greatest T.V. Guide
covers of all time. 'The Andy Griffith Show' cover of May 11, 1963 ranks in
the upper echelon. It's the one that pictures Andy Griffith, Don Knotts, and
Ronny Howard in an unguarded moment of laughter. The photographer fibbed to
the group that he had no film in his camera. He got the shot he wanted in a
natural way that wasn't posed.

advertising the 2nd Annual Show and Swap Meet on Sat. the 20th of July and
Sunday the 21st of July. Normally things like that do not catch my eye, but
this flyer also said "Featuring The Spirit of Mayberry"...Starring Barney Fife
impersonator Mick Kieffer. There is also a dance with "Music By Opie"...sounds
interesting. This sounds like it would be a fun event for folks nearby or
whose who may not be able to attend the happenings in Indiana that same

>>>Andy obviously was engaged to Opie's mother at some point, but very
little
is known about that part of his life. In "Class Reunion" we learn that he
and Sharon DuSpain once talked about marriage (had they actually gotten

are engaged. They finally get married in the first episode of Mayberry RFD.
