Do you fellow Digest members hear voices in your head like I do? For
example, I can never hear anyone say "It's time" without hearing Barney
reading the emergency book to Andy in Quiet Sam. He read it in such a flat
voice - "It's time, it's time."

I believe our clever Rafe Hollister has hit the nail on the head! Any
community can enact local ordinances to their liking and perhaps Mayberry
made exceptions to the no-liquor laws, for special occasions (not to be
confused with those elixir sisters' decisions) like Christmas and such.
Sounds good to me!!

>>>Re actor Olan Soule who played the part of John Masters (choir director
and hotel clerk. Before TV their was a Radio Show called First Nighter in
which he played the leading Male part and also starred a lady by the name of
Barbara Luddy. I guess Tv took away his ability to play a leading man.
>>>

Mr. Soule provided the voice of Batman in a couple of animated TV series.
I'd say that qualifies as a "leading man." Speaking of cartoon voices,
Barbara Luddy was Kanga to Clint Howard's Roo in the earliest Winnie the
Pooh films.

Subject: Goodbye, Thelma Lou
To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

>>>Did they feel, for some reason, that her character was not strong enough
to stand on its own without Barney? Did they feel the viewers would not
accept a Barney-less Thelma Lou?
>>>

That's exactly what they were thinking. They figured with no Barney in
town, the character of Thelma Lou was no longer necessary. The saddest part
of all is the way they chose to write her out.

For those who haven't seen this episode (The Return of Barney Fife), Barney
comes back for a class reunion, and he's very anxious to see Thelma Lou
again (she moved away about the same time he did). He's hoping they pick up
right where they left off, but it turns out she got MARRIED! Barney is
absolutely devastated.

Betty Lynn was very upset with this script, not only because she knew it
meant she'd be out of a job, but also because it called for Thelma Lou to
betray her "true love," as it were. Betty told the producers, "There's no
way Thelma Lou would ever do this to Barney!" They replied, "Yes, she
would," and that was the end of Thelma Lou.

One good thing about this episode is that Don Knotts gives a sensational
performance. In one short scene, Barney goes from jubilation to absolute
despair. No other actor could have pulled it off.

>>>
Does anyone have an address for Miss Lynn? I would like to send her a note
for a very nice thing she did for me at Mule Day in Brent this past
weekend.
>>>

Last time I checked, she was listed in the phone book. She lives in the Los
Angeles area.

Regarding how many times Andy went outside the
law...well, I don't know if they were all criminal
charges but don't forget that Barney had "76 documented
cases of malfeasance"

Subject: andy's unlawful acts
Date: Wed, 26 Jun 2002 12:10:56 -0700 (PDT)

I think it is about time that the real truth concerning
our "fine" sheriff was heard. Some one brought up the
idea of listing all the unlawful acts committed by
Andy. Now we can see just what kind of sin town
Mayberry really is. I will list only a few of of his
gross acts of malfeasance.(Every one knows he is lax
and does not run a taught ship).(1)Used the squad car
for personnel business. Example, going to church, crow
hunting and even private trips to the duck
pond.(2)Placing relatives in key positions. Example,
COUSIN Barney as deputy, his AUNT as the prison food
service and his SON as jail- janitor.(3) And last I
think the regulators of the stock exchange would be
interested in hearing about his stock advice. Example,
Advising the town citizens about investing in a certain
record company. And swindling his own deputy in a rare
coin scam. Sorry this message is so long but these
crimes need to be adressed. If not you know what they
say " Give them 40 and they will do 45......"

Ben Weaver hired Scobey after stopping the foreclosure and brought
Christmas gifts to the jail when another character played by the same actor
was arrested for moonshining and Ben did everything he could to get
arrested. He even managed a grin when Opie ended up selling lemonade in the
vacant lot where Bert Miller had put up shop. Ben also sent the Scobeys a
new chair when the one he had sold them broke when he sat down. ("Who sold
you this piece of junk?" "Says here Weaver's Department Store." "I'll send
a new one out in the morning. (Will Wright also showed up on "I Love Lucy"
as the father of twins "Teensie" and "Weensie, " one of whom was engaged to
Tennessee Ernie Ford's character.)

To say that Ben Weaver was only concerned about himself would be unfair,
thanks to Andy's essential good character and ability to get Ben to see the
human side of the equation. (Didn't Barney talk about the "human equation"
once?) The look on Andy's face when he handed Mr. Scobey back his glasses
and the resulting looks on the Scobey's faces were priceless.

Andy may have stretched the law a time or two, maybe even committed a
malfeasance or two, but I can forgive that. No better character from start
to finish ever existed in TV history. (Alan Alda on M*A*S*H ranks a close
second.) I invite responsible conflicting opinion.

Hey all,

Perhaps Weaver owned another store, outside the county. The original
"Scrooge" Ben seemed the type that might have operations else where.
Perhaps the folks in Mayberry drove across the line to his other store to
celebrate National Potato Week.

Or could spirits refer to items typically sold for medicinal purposes, but
which were often substituted for imbibing material?

Just a few thoughts.

"Goooood, let me have a steak, and a bake potato ...and green beans."

Hey Folks,

I'm looking forward to seeing several of you this Friday in Pigeon Forge.
Remember, we're gonna try and meet up over by the windows to the right of the
entrance as you're going into the theater.

Jan went out today and got some Name Tags for us so everybody can put one on
so you can spot one another. I'll be easy to spot because I'll be the nut
running around as Floyd. I hope some of you will wear your WBMUTBB t-shirts
as well. Even if you don't have a WBMUTBB t-shirt, you can help yourself be
spotted by getting a name tag and wearing it around.

This should be fun!!! I hope to see you there!!!

Andy would never trump up charges. Remember, he
impounded Bobby Fleet's "bus" for an Interstate Pest

Also in the Mayberry band episode Andy coerces Bobby Fleet and his boys into
helping the Mayberry band by threatning to
have a bug inspection of all of the Bobby Fleet's band equipment and car.
A clear misuse of his power to get what he wanted.

From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I have 2 tickets for sale for Friday's (6/28/02) "Tribute to Mayberry"
show in Pigeon Forge, TN. I'm willing to let them go for cheaper than
regular admission (which is $27.75 including tax). If anyone is
interested, email me directly at "[EMAIL PROTECTED]".

Also, remember that the Mayberry chapter from Knoxville, TN and the
TennesseeTAGS chapter are meeting at the Texas Roadhouse restaurant there
in Pigeon Forge at 4:30 pm on Friday. Just ask for the "Mayberry" table
and Juanita will point you in the right direction. We'll try to get a
table large enough for everyone, but of course will have to take whatever
the restaurant has available. It will definitely be in the NON-smoking
section.

I'm no Paul, but as a lifelong resident of a "dry" county, maybe I can tell
you how it is here. It is illegal to sell alcoholic beverages here, but not
to consume such beverages purchased legally in the next county. It is also
illegal to make your own, since (as was pointed out a couple of days ago) the
government won't get their cut of the action.

Next week we are heading off on vacation. Destination? North Carolina, of
course. We've wanted to see and tour the Biltmore mansion for a long time
and now we will. And there ain't no way I'm coming that close to Mt. Airy
without stopping by to see it, too. I've never been there before. In fact I
never even heard of it until I joined this here club. If any of you good
people has any advice for me in that respect I'm all ears.

Next week better hurry up and get here or I'm gonna have a spell!
