As always, Paul, has done an excellent job explaining things that
often seem unexplainable... however, I believe one important episode
has been left out of his thinking. Unless my memory is completely off
(which does sometimes happen), the episode in which Otis Campbell
receives an honorary award for being a descendant of Nathaniel Tibbs
has an ending scene with the mayor, Andy, Otis, and the ladies having
an alcoholic drink to celebrate (Otis was a bit worried about
accepting the drink due to his "problem"). I don't believe the mayor
and Andy would allow this if Mayberry were a dry county as Paul has
presented. How would you explain this occurrence, Paul?
Kind Regards,
George

Subject: An Andy Question
I can't remember this subject discussed before, so here goes.
I've been thinking about how many times during the run of TAGS that Andy
broke the law. I'll throw out a couple and feel free to add to the
list.
1. In "The Bazaar", Andy throws a rock and breaks a window (destruction
of public property).
2. In "The Mayberry Band", he misuses public funds by taking money under
false pretenses.
So use your imagination. For instance, in "Guitar Player", he jails
Bobby Fleet on a trumped up charge.

Paul, you've stated this argument before about ol' Weaver not coming right
out and SAYING that he sells spirits in his store, but like the big fish
said when he spit Jonah out on the beach, "I ain't a-swallerin' THAT."
Ben Weaver was a skinflint and a tightwad, but he was also a shrewd
businessman. He was always on the look-out to make an extra buck or two
wherever he could, so it seems only natural that he would sell spirits in
his store during the holiday season, when folks might be in the mood to
take a celebratory "nip". At the same time, he would be GRAVELY upset at
any moonshiners taking away from his business, so his actions against ol'
Sam Muggins were appropriate "Weaver-like" behavior.
Ben's quote, "I'd like to see how forgivin' you'd be if you had a store
that sold spirits, and half the county was cuttin' in on your sales by
making their own -- again' the law..." can only mean that HE is the
injured party in this case. HE has a store that sells spirits, and HIS
sales were being reduced by the folks making their own "spirits". Who else
could he have POSSIBLY been talking about? When has Ben Weaver EVER been
concerned about anyone else besides Ben Weaver?
As for how he can sell spirits in a supposedly dry county, I think it all
goes back to how the term "dry" is defined in that area. It's highly
possible that Ben Weaver, in owning a reputable retail store, was allowed
by law to sell spirits during the holiday season, and Ben would have duly
filled out any and all permits, paperwork, and contracts to make it all
legal and above-board. Because he saw the PROFIT POTENTIAL, he did
everything necessary to see to it that Weaver's got the spirits to sell,
and he was bound and determined to stop anyone else from cutting into his
profits.
That's the way I see it. And you can tell the Governor to put THAT in his
smipe a poke it. :-)

ANDY: I'd say we're better off than a lot of people. Got a roof over our
heads, Aunt Bee--finest food you ever put in your mouth-- Barney for a
friend. Yeah, in some ways I'd say we are rich.
BARN: You see Opie, it ain't only the materialistic things in this world that
makes a person rich. There's love and friendship.......That can make a person
rich.
----------
BARN: The last big buy I made was my Mom's and Dad's anniversary present.
ANDY: What'd ya' get 'em?
BARN: A septic tank.
ANDY: For their anniversary?
BARN: They're awfully hard to buy for. Besides, it was something they can
use. They were really thrilled. It had two tons of concrete in it. All
steel reinforced.
ANDY: You're a fine son, Barn.
BARN: I try.

Counting the pilot episode from The Danny Thomas Show-- I have all
250 episodes of TAGS except for the episode where Howard makes his
big break for The Carribean Islands (which features and actor from
a favorite movie of mine: "Alien.")
But back to the reason for this e-mail:
I live in GERMANY.
"The Mayberry Deputy" has a VERY LARGE-- "It's B-I-G!"-- 1/3-page
full-color photograph in my copy of
"The European Stars and Stripes Newspaper."
The full-color photograph is 5.5 x 8.5 inches.
First chance goes to Allan Newsome or David L. Browning. If neither
e-mails me, I'll put the newspaper page captioned:
"David L. Browning, of Bristol, Virginia, playing the part of Mayberry
Sheriff's Deputy Barney Fife, starts a race Saturday during the May-
berry Squad Car Nationals between two replicas of patrol cars that were
used on the popular 1960's television series "The Andy Griffith Show'"
in an envelope and mail it to YOU.
Cost?
How about a TAGS bumper sticker... an extra TAGS trading card... just
SOMETHING in trade. A small autographed photo of the deputy'd be even
better!
A note from "Mac" here==> Those MAYBERRY REUNION VHS-TAPES that Jim
Clark sells through the Newsletter-- check with Weaver's-- are the
next-best-thing to being there. Buy one! THAT'S how I know about
"The Deputy."
It's MORE than a "look-alike/sound alike" Mister Browning is a Saint
in Khacki... an actor who must be terribly frustrated that fame is
fleeting. How can Ernest get "Scared Stupid" into movies and the only
videos David's on is Mayberry Reunion-related tapes?
One day we'll ALL be seeing a LOT MORE of David... hear than Ron Howard?

I am rejoining WBMUTBB after about a year of being offline, and I'm looking
forward to once again being a part of this little corner of Mayberry. I am a
full-time mother and pastor's wife and a part-time professional photographer
(mostly weddings and portraits). I thoroughly enjoy TAGS, especially the
Barney Fife years. We don't have cable TV, so I miss out on the current TAGS
broadcasts. However, I am collecting the Columbia House tapes. I grew up near
Clay City, Indiana, which is the "Mayberry of the Midwest." That's official,
too, because the small town recently had "Mayberry of the Midwest" registered
as an official trademark! My parents have lately been replenishing their cat
population, and I suggested some Mayberry names. So they now have Barney,
Thelma Lou, Aunt Bee, Gomer, and Goober. Thelma Lou and Aunt Bee both had
kittens, so now I'd better come up with some fresh Mayberry names to keep the
trend going!

My husband Harry and I have been married for 40 yrs and during that time I
think we have watched the Old Andy Griffith shows hundreds of times and we
still enjoy them and laugh at everyone. My children all watched them and now
the grandkids do. I have one grandson, Tommy, who can play trivia with the
best of them and he is only 5 years old. He loves to watch these shows.
Each year we go to Myrtle Beach for vacation and numerous of my children and
grandchildren go with us. We always stop and stay at Mt. Airy,NC. We will be
heading there this Friday, June 21,2002. We always make extra time to roam
through the town and go through the museums. We eat at the Snappy Lunch and
shop in the stores. The small town atmospere puts you right back in the show
and all of its charm.
Thanks for keeping the show alive!!

my life, but became "addicted" as a seminary student. I watched it without
fail with some other students each weekday immediately after wolfing down
lunch in the dining hall. My favorite scenes that bring tears of laughter:
"Giraffes are selfish" in "Dogs, Dogs, Dogs", any scene with "The Fun Girls",
all of "Citizen's Arrest", and when Barney asks Floyd what his number is as
they line up to be deputized. TAGS is definitely the best-written, best-acted
show in TV history.
