Subject: chili size burgers
To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I have always loved the scene where Barney and Andy
are doing the inventory and Barney goes to the diner
to get sandwiches for them. He says he's going to get
two chili size burgers with all the fixins. I had
never understood what a chili size burger was until
yesterday. I was flipping through my favorite foodie
magazine- Saveur- They had an article on the great
American hamburger- and there it was! Not only do they
describe it, an open faced burger covered in chili,
but they also give the original recipe. No mention of
our favorite deputy's connection to it- I may just
have to write a letter to the editor. (she's from
Atlanta and ought to know about this). Andy-"That'll
lay on your chest!" Barney-"You work it off man, you
work it off!"

Lou moved out of town after Barney left made perfect sense. I envisioned her
being totally devastated that Barney would move away and not marry her, so
she realized she could only go on with her life in another town. To stay in
Mayberry where everything would remind her of Barney would have been too
difficult. <<
I totally agree. I think Barney was more afraid of marriage than anyone on
the show. Remember when he and Thel were in front of the furniture store
window discussing their ideas of what they wanted their home to look like?
When Barney realized what he was doing, I thought he was going to have a
stroke right there on the sidewalk. He wanted a den with no ladies allowed
and I think he wanted it to smell like a dog.

That's true. Cary Grant and his lovely wife, Diane, had a child when he

To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I figured Ben was a wholesaler and needed a warehouse.
Besides being a retail merchant in Mayberry. That way
he would have sold goods, including spirits, wholesale
in a region, very likely outside the county. Which
could explain his opposition to others selling spirits
in Mayberry. Surrounding counties may have been 'wet'.
The foreclosure for Ben's warehouse might have been in
the next county, where spirits could be warehoused and
sold to retailers. If people bought spirits locally,
they'd have no need to go outside the county and buy
from his customers.
I've definitely been under the bucket thankin' toooo
long!

From: Jason Harrod <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
I saw a "Time and Again" special on NBC a couple of days ago with a bunch of
interviews and clips I had never seen: Andy talking about a dream he had in
which he killed off his character, Ron Howard talking about the baseball
game that inspired his dad to write that baseball game episode. The
funniest was Ron Howard talking about his dad spanking him on the set in
front of the whole cast and crew; Andy leaned over and said "You deserved
it."
Unfortunately, they interrupted the show with coverage of the Vice
President, who was in town stumping for Liddy Dole. I wonder how it feels
to be president of the U.S. for 2 hours?
One cool thing you can do in Mt. Airy is visit Pilot Mountain national
park. They got trails and stuff you can hike around. Then when you're done
you can have chinese food! (but it's more fun with more people).
Hope everyone is well,
Jason

Charlie, I hate to see you depriving yourself of great T.V. Tomorrow
(Monday) they are showing "Malcolm at the Crossroads," a half-hour of
cathode-ray gold (imho of course). Maybe I am just a dirty Englishter, but
I think you ought to treat yourself.

I throughly enjoyed the 'A Tribute to Mayberry' show in Pigeon Forge,
Tennesssee.I don't care if three hours is long time to go without eating.
Between shaking Keith Thibodeaux' hand, seeing George Lindsey's brown felt
beanie up close and personal, and mingling briefly with fans, I truly had an
out of Goober experience.
P.S. What would Barney think of all those low riders cruising around town?

One of my all time favorite front porch scenes is from the mother bird
episode where Opie kills her with his sling shot. After taking care of
the bady birds, Andy explains to Opie about releasing the birds and says:
don't the trees seem full this time of the year (or something to this
effect). It sure is a valuable lesson he has taught to Opie and I feel
we all can learn from this in handling life's problems. Wouldn't the
world be a better place if we all would stop and listen to his wisdom.

I can see your point, Aunt Bee 1, and this leads me to wonder why, if the
producers didn't think Thelma Lou without Barney would fly with TAGS
watchers, they didn't allow Barney and Thelma Lou to marry and move away from
Mayberry together. Because, frankly, I was always bothered by the fact that
Barney would move away and leave Thelma Lou behind without any kind of
definite understanding between them that would have prevented Thelma Lou from
doing just what she did -- go off and find herself another fella to wed.
Does anyone know if the producers considered this route? Did they know at
the time Don Knotts left the show that he would be returning for several
guest shots over time? If so, would this have been their reason for not
getting Barn and Thel hitched? Perhaps they thought marriage would not suit
the kind of storylines they would use for future guest shots.
This leads me to another point -- in sending Barney off to Raleigh sans
Thelma Lou, they left him with no emotional support system, outside of the
occasional visit by Andy. This makes the guest-shot Barney of the color
years a somewhat pathetic figure. In the B&W years, Barney seemed to believe
his own bluster and bravado, even if no one else did. Sure, there were many
blunders, times when he made a complete fool of himself, but he always
bounced back, thanks to the friendship of Andy, the love of Thelma Lou, and
the encouragement of his home-town community. We could laugh at Barney
without feeling sorry for him because we knew he was surrounded by people who
loved him, despite his weaknesses and failings. And that support system
seemed to give Barney confidence. But once Barney moved away from Mayberry,
he lost that emotional support and the confidence that it inspired. He
exhibited the same bluster and bravado; however, you get the feeling that
even he doesn't believe it now. There is no one like Andy or Thelma Lou, who
loved Barney in spite of (or maybe even because of!) his character flaws. He
is surrounded by people either who feign affection for him in order to take
advantage of him, who merely tolerate him, or who outright disdain him.
Though he rejects any suggestion of moving back to Mayberry, you can't help
but sense an underlying wistfulness, a certain regret for all he left behind
and will perhaps never have again.
Thelma Lou

Subject: Return to Mayberry - DVD?
Hey All,
Like quite a few other Mayberry fans I've been smarting for some time over
the fact that Return to Mayberry is no longer available on VHS, or better-
DVD! Well I finally found a good tape of it recorded before TV networks
started adding on screen graphics, etc and I've managed to locate someone
to transfer it to DVD. It is a little bit pricey however, but right now my
PC has a DVD Writer but not the necessary capture hardware so I have no
choice but to take them up on it.
I got to thinking and after checking with a few friends about the legality
of the whole thing it seems as though it would be legal to offer copies of
this DVD to the Digest members like we often do with episode tapes, seeing
as how you can't get it somewhere else and it was a TV recording originally
and not a copy of a commercial released disc. So here's the thing, I'm
offering to copy the "Return to Mayberry" DVD for any digest member who is
interested, but to determine how feasible this is I need to know how many
are going to be interested. If you want full details on the project please
contact me directly so we don't tie up the digest. These copies would be
in DVD-R format, which is compatible with about 95% of the current home DVD
players.
Obviously a full official Viacom release would be better, but maybe this
can tide us over until then and keep people from having to pay outrageous
prices for video store copies on eBay.
