There it is again---a Mayberry moment, in the middle
of a transmission repair manual. The author gives the
correct and most economical fix for my transmission.
His quote is "Shazzam!", it's fixed.
Also, can anyone really imagine Floyd popping Mr.
Foley in the snoot?

Subject: Speedy O'Malley
Date: Tue, 2 Jul 2002 09:17:28 -0400
The speed with which Mr. O'Malley (Chuck to his friends) crosses the street
from the bus stop has always hit me, not because of the direction but
because of the time. Based on where Andy was standing the direction he was
looking, he would be looking across the street to the corner of the side
street where we normally see any busses stop (remember the view from Floyd's
when Ellen the manicurist comes to town). So the angle has always seemed
right to me.
Mr. O'Malley being on the sidewalk also didn't bother me since I just
figured he crossed the street straight across and turned on the sidewalk to
approach Andy.
BUT, you know how wide the street is at that point, it is quite broad. From
the time Andy greets Mr. O'Malley and we assume he is on the other side of
the street until he appears in the camera frame, he would have really had to
hustle --- and while carrying a suitcase.
Of course, if he was wearing some of his family's orthopaedic shoes, they
might put a spring in his step!

I'd like to add my "amen" to all those positive reports of the Pigeon Forge
Tribute to Mayberrry. It started with a great dinner at the Texas
Roadhouse with Dennis and some other Tennessee Mayberryites. I went to the
theater without a ticket. Just before I got to the ticket window, someone
had turned in two third row center tickets. Through a weird trade that my
darlin' person made, we ended up on the second row, me in the center aisle
seat! Good thing I'd rubbed that little red haired boy's head! It was
indeed a great evening. It was wonderful seeing some people I'd met only a
few times and also good to meet new folks My only regret is that I didn't
get to meet more of you.

I was watching Dennis the Menace yesterday afternoon, and saw John Masters

Subject: Freedom's Price
Date: Tue, 2 Jul 2002 11:35:36 -0400
Our nation's founding fathers, men who paid freedom's price, and knew how to
count the cost of liberty.
On July 4, 1776, there was singed in the City of Phiadelphia the Declaration
of Independence. It marked
the birth of this nation which under God, was designed for world leadership.
Our forefathers made a forthright
declaration of dependence upon Almighty God. The closing words of this
document solemnly declare:
"with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually
plege to each other our lives, our
fortunes, and our sacred honor."
The fifty-six courageous men who signed that document would come to face much
hardship in a struggling
new nation.
Of the Fifty-six, few were long to survive. Five were captured by the British
and tortured before they died.
Twelve had their homes, from Rhode Island to Charleston, sacked, looted,
occupied by the enemy, or
burned. Two lost their sons in the army. One had two sons captured. Nine of
the fifty-six died in the war, from
its hardships or from its bullets.
They considered liberty much more important than the security they enjoyed,
and they pledged their lives,
their fortunes, and their sacred honor. They paid the price. And FREEDOM was
won. Freedom is not, I'll do
as I please as many in our country do. Rather as someone said: "To be born
free is a privilege. To die free is an
awesome responsibility." Freedom is always purchased at great cost, and is
never free to do as one pleases
without personal responsibility.
To those who sacrificed for our freedom, the end was worth the painful means.
If it had not been those who
counted the cost of freedom and willingly paid for it, where would we be
today? Where will we be tomorrow if
the athiest, liberals, history changers, and those who hate the American way
have their way? Where will we
be if men and women of integrity do not come forward now, today and pay the
price to reclaim a dying America.
"The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do
nothing" Edmund Burke
Have a good 4th of July, pray for George W. Bush and his cabnet, and stand for
those things that has made
America great. Fly the colors!

"I think Andy summed up Barney's life without the Mayberry support system
when
he said ( in "Return to Mayberry"), " I don't expect Barney's had many high
spots in the last few years.....everybody deserves at least one." Andy knew
what Barney's life was probably like.""
Kinda makes you wonder what made Barney want to move off like that, knowing
what all he was leaving behind-job promotion aside, it was a very risky and
brave move on his part-I suspect his pride wouldn`t let him move back, even
after maybe seeing he had left the best parts of his life behind....so
sad..... Just a thought

Anita,
Thank you. Allan loves doing the digest/TAGS. Thanks for your kind words.
He has worked very hard for about 10 years on this stuff and I want to say
publicly that I'm proud of all that he's done. Even if he picked a squad car
over a van. :-).
Some friends ask Allan why the guy (Paul) that sold the squad car sold it and
Allan told them that he thought the guy's wife wanted a van. My reply was
"Jan wanted a van and we got a squad car". Maybe some day I'll get a
van......
Don't get me wrong I love the squad car. I got to race in the 2nd annual
Mayberry Squad Car Nat'l in Brent, AL a couple of weeks ago and I came in
2nd. I also came in 2nd in the relay race. It was alot of fun. You all
should try to plan on coming to Alabama next year for the 3rd Annual Nat'ls.
You'll have a great time the folks in Brent,AL along with Kenneth "Otis"
Junkin and the "Hardy Eatting Men and Beautiful Delicate Women" Chapter did
a great job. Kevin "Speed, Speed" Sneed won the drag race and Ricky
"Mayberry Squad Car chaper" Carnes won the relay race. The relay race was a
timed race you started out in your squad car. You had to get out and fix a
STOP sign, get back in the car. Drive to a still ( a 55 gal drum on it's
side) take an ax and pow, pow, pow. Get back in the car drive up to a clothes
line take the clothes off the line and put them in a tub, while leaving the
clothes pins on the line. Get back in the car drive over to Ernest T. (he
was throwing bricks at the car) Arrest him and drive to the finish line. I
really was ALOT of fun. Make plans to attend next year. This year Betty
Lynn was there and was wonderful as she always is. They plan on trying to
get another TAGS person for next year. So make your plans to attend. I was
great seeing everyone at the Pigeon Forge show. Looking forward to seeing
everyone at the Mayberry in the Midwest show.

A while back a friend told me Howard Sprague appeared in an episode,as an
insurance agent. I told my friend I could be wrong, but I didn,t remember that
one.
This morning in the episode where Aunt Bea. loses an expensive pin. Andy
tells her to put in an insurance claim. The agent is old Howard. However his
character is called
Ed Jenkins. I stand corrected..

I realize that the discussion on whether Mayberry was "wet" or "dry" is
probably getting a little stale, but last night while watching "Malcolm at
the Crossroads", I noticed a window that said" Hotel Bar and Restaurant".
Guess liquor sales were legal at soime point.

Well folks, it appears that events have conspired against me. We won't be
going to Mt. Airy after all. Lack of time and poor preparation (my own
fault) mean that we'll have to be satisfied with Biltmore and Gatlinburg this
trip. Of course, Mayberry Days is coming up soon...September, isn't it? I'm
gonna be there come heck or high water!
Its about 20 minutes after 5 so I better get everyone up and get 'em moving.
You folks have a wonderful, safe July 4th and I'll type to you when we get
back.

The episode where Howard plays a guy named Ed Jenkins,
the Taylors' insurance agent has always baffled me.
How could a show pull this off? Having a regular
character appear as someone else? I don't think you'd
ever see that happen today and I can't think of
another case where that has been done. Has anyone else
ever wondered about that?

"could it have been stolen?"

Mr. Dodson appeared first as Ed Jenkins in episode 178 and it was a very
minor role with only a few minutes of air time. The producers of the show
liked him and when they came up with the new "regular" character of Howard
Sprague they thought of Mr. Dodson and invited him to play that part begining
in episode 185 "The County Clerk."
That means these two episodes aired several weeks apart. Back then, there
weren't any VCRs so most folks would have forgotten that small role that Mr.
Dodson played and just remember him as Howard Sprague.
