<< Mike Peacock "I ain't standing in no stag line with Mr. Schwump and a
bunch of slumped over teenage boys....." >>
I don't mean to be picky and I LOVE this line - but isn't it "Old Man
Perkins" (or somebody similar) instead of Mr. Schwump? I mean - I hate for
Schwump to be accused of standing in a stag line if he didn't - the poor
guy's got enough problems as it is with that rug and all. And...... if
there's a Mrs. Schwump, boy would she ever be ticked off if she knew he went
to the Chamber of Commerce dance without her.

Hello All,
I may be a little late with a response but I wanted to say how much I
enjoyed A Tribute to Mayberry in Pigeon Forge. I have seen many of the
Mayberry shows and this was one of the best. George Lindsay was absolutely
fabulous and even funnier than ever. David Browning was at his best!!
Not only am I a huge Mayberry Fan but also an I Love Lucy Fan and I must
say that my fondest dreams came true when I was able to meet Keith
Thibodeaux. He was so gracious and kind and talked with everyone that came
thru his line. It was so exciting to be able to talk with him a few
minutes and get my picture taken with him. I bought his book, "Life after
Lucy" , which he autographed, and I just wanted to let everyone know that
this is a wonderful book. It really touched my heart and is a truly
inspirational story. Everyone should read it
Thanks to everyone who works so hard to put these shows on. This show was
very special to me because it was my 40th birthday present from my family.
It is a birthday I will never forget.

Subject: RE: Howard's investment
I wasn't gonna weigh in on this 'cause I consider myself to be off duty
when I'm reading the digest - even though I'm a little hard looking in my
civies. But here goes:
As has been pointed out, there are several pieces of missing
information. For example, some of y'all have pointed out that we don't
know if Howard got a bank loan or if there's any other kind of interest
involved, who was responsible for paying for utilities, etc. Therefore,
some assumptions have to be made. Let's assume that Howard paid cash (and
no interest in involved at all, we don't adjust for inflation,
etc.). Let's further assume we're talking about all this on an annual basis.
As has also been point out, $65 per month, which according to Howard is a
5% return (at least) on his investment, is equal to $780 per year. In
other words, 780 is 5% of something. Thinking algebraically (wait, don't
run away), that translates to the following equation: 780 = .05X
Solving for X (which represents Howard's investment), X = $15,600. That's
according to my slide rule (and it's a gooooood machine).
Again, that's based on some assumptions. Math isn't always as mechanical
as lots of folks think. There are different ways to look at most things,
even mathematical ones.

>>>Maybe Howard took the loss as a gesture of good will. Uh, whayathink?
Right. When Howard lowered Floyd's rent, he knew that Floyd would be
retiring in the near future. When the new man eventually came in to replace
Floyd, Howard would probably have raised the rent back to his original
figure.
Floyd comments in this episode that he should have bought the building years
ago, "when he had the money." It seems to me that he should have PLENTY of
money. Think about it: He is the only barber in town. Mayberry's
population (according to John Masters) is 2,000, presumably half of which
are male. There must be a few totally bald men in town, plus some rural
fellows who cut their own hair (such as Sam Becker), but even then Floyd
must have at least 900 regular customers. None of the men in town have long
hair, so let's assume each of these 900 customers gets a haircut once a
month. Floyd's price is $1.75 per cut (see "The Case of the Punch in the
Nose"). This means his gross monthly income is roughly $1,575, or nearly
$19,000 annually, and that doesn't even include the money he makes for
shaves, hair tonic, shampoos, etc. Figure all that in, plus tips, and he
probably makes in the neighborhood of $25,000 annually, a princely sum in
the 1960s. He must be one of the richest men in town!
At his age, his house is probably paid for. He is a widower (from season 3
onward) so he doesn't have to budget money for his wife's clothes. He does
have at least two children, but by this time the oldest one (saxophone
player seen in "Those Gossipin' Men") is probably out on his own, with his
own job. Where does all Floyd's money go?

I did see Mike, but didn't know who he was. Mike you
were busy in the orchestra pit, or getting picked on.
My daughter Sherry Lynn and I were right in front of
you when you were getting picked on.
Joe, sorry we didn't get to meet. Sherry Lynn and I
arrived Sat am about 10:45. Fortunately for us,
Indiana is an hour behind where we live in TN......or
else it would have been 11:45.
I too missed Anita. Hope she was there. I think the
folks are going to try to put it on again next
year............sure hope so.
I think we are going to try to make it over to Mt.
Airy on Saturday for Mayberry Days. There are a
number of Chapter Members who we'd like to see again,
whom we met at Meadowview a couple years ago.

Hey all,
I was able to spend Saturday in New Castle, and thought I had died and gone
to heaven (Despite the fact that it was "stanky hot")! Sitting in the sixth
row during the reunion show, and seeing my Mayberry heroes talking, singing
and laughing-- it seemed like a dream. Was it really the first Mayberry
reunion in the Midwest? If so, it was long overdue, judging from the waves
of love and affection pouring from the audience (I heard that the organizers
were going to try to make it an annual event. Is this true, Allan?). Ernest
T, at 83 years old, brought the house down, and had many in the crowd in
tears when he gave his heart-felt thanks to TAGS fans. TAGS is truly a
phenomena in our society, a whole community has been preserved as a state of
mind for 40 years! Everyone who attended was so polite, friendly and
talkative. I had a great time just standing in line for autographs and
waiting to get into the auditorium. And Allan, you were awesome as Floyd!
Other highligts were the Darling boys singing "There is a Time" and "Salty
Dog" with Charlene once again (with Denver Pyle there in spirit). George
Lindsey showed us that he hasn't lost any comic timing. But really, EVERYONE
was a joy to see and hear. The Barney impersonator was amazing, and a great
way to tie the cast together. The only disappointment was that Jean Carson
(Daphne)couldn't make it, and that they closed down Betty Lynn's autograph
line when I was only three people away from her!! I just wanted to tell her
how much I appreciate her, but judging from the response of the crowd, I
think she knows how much everyone does!
Special thanks to Mike Creech, who let me know he had a ticket to sell! "I
love you, I love you, I LOVE you!" (Ernest T. Bass)
Sorry for going on and on, I just can't help myself!
Can't wait 'till next year(?)!
Rich (blessed with two little Opies) in Indiana

How tall is Andy and how tall is Howard?

Hey Gang; got a question for ya; in the very first episode "The New
Housekeeper, what little figures are on Opie's pajamas? Maybe for that era
they were little cowboys or Mighty Mouse? They can be seen on trading card
no. 91. Get out your magnifying glasses!
"If she goes, what'll happen to her? She can't do anything--play ball, catch
fish or frogs. She'll be helpless! That's why she's gotta stay, so I can

Also, hopefully I can make it to Mayberry in the Midwest next year. I sure do
miss the Bradford, OH event ( Squad Car Rendevous). It was practically in my
back yard. It was held the 2nd weekend in July. I had my own Barney-thon at
home in honor of Don Knotts birthday.
And a note to the other Kendra out there; keep on watching TAGS all you can;
I been watching since I was a young'un, and everything you need to know about
people, you can learn from watching the Andy Griffith Show!!
Happy Birthday to Don Knotts "Now I'll drive, so I'll sit in the front

I guess I have to say that I have just spent one of the best weekends of my
life with some of the most wonderful people this world has in it. Mayberry in
the Midwest was a dream come true for me. I enjoyed every single minute I was
there. The autograph session Saturday morning was great, and standing in line
with other fans made the wait even better. I must say that my time with Miss
Betty Lynn was magical, such a lady! When I walked up to her table it was as
if I was the only fan there to see her she was so kind and just as sweet as she
is on TAGS. I forgot about the time change from Ohio to Indiana, but I'm glad
I did, as it gave me more time in line to make friends with other fans. I
didn't get to meet up with anyone from the digest, and I regret that, but I
made some new friends and those that didn't know about the digest... well, they
do now. I did get to chat with Allan a few minutes which was great, and I got
a picture of him "cutting" my hair. I hope to see!
some of my new friends here on the new members list before too long. All the
stars were so gracious in signing my book, and believe me I was awestruck to
meet people I have enjoyed on TAGS for so many years.
The show on Saturday night was absolutely wonderful, and Allan and David were
fantastic, and added so much to the show. I got back to my hotel room Saturday
night and my face hurt from smiling so much. Everyone put on a great show, and
the music was magical, I could have listened to Maggie/Charlene, Betty/Thelma
Lou and the Dillards for many more hours. I never realized how funny James
Best/Jim Lindsey was, but he did a wonderful job too. Mitch Jayne in his
tribute to Denver Pyle/Briscoe made me appreciate the show even more as I
learned things from him about the making of the shows. When David Browning
got Mike Peacock up with him and teased him about looking like Mr. Schwump it
was hilarious, and our own Allan/Floyd did a wonderful magic trick for us. lol
When Charlene/Maggie sang "There is a Time" with the Dillards I held my breath,
it was like stepping back in time to when they did it on the show. Rodney
Dillards singing of the song "The Andy Griffith Show" was s!
pecial too as it made me realize once again why we love the show, and what it
means to all of us.
I, like many others want to say to Mr. Curt Bell a great big THANK YA, THANK
YA, THANK YA!! for making this event possible. I sure hope what I heard was
true, that they were hoping to make this an annual event. The only bad part of
the weekend was having it come to an end. Being together with folks from the
show as well as the fans made it even better. I came home Sunday morning and
brought my book to church to share with a lady there who is a big fan of the
show too, so I was able to share my joy with someone who loves the show as we
all do.

If Barney were really 35, he wouldn't be on 'The Andy Griffith Show.' He
would still be on 'The Steve Allen Show.' Don Knotts began doing TAGS at age
36. He dropped in on Andy Sawyer in Greenwood at age 46 on 'The New Andy

This is not something that really matters in the grand scheme of anything,
but in TV Guide's online poll of the "Greatest TV Shows of All Time," TAGS is
about to be overtaken by "60 Minutes," which has suddenly been receiving
votes way out of proportion to those of TV shows that have been well ahead of
it for weeks, including TAGS.
All of sudden. TAGS is losing ground by at least 50 votes a day to where
we're currently less than 50 votes ahead and may actually fall behind in the
next day or two. I can't imagine that "60 Minutes" would have any kind of
organized following, but some sort of bloc voting is apparently going on for
them.
Anyway, for any WBMUTBB members who're interested in a Barney Fife show of
force, it might be fun to beat back the "60 Minutes" advance with some
organized voting of our own. Again, it's not a poll that really means
anything since we all know TAGS is #1, but it's a small way that we can show
support for TAGS just for the sport of it.
The address of the poll is
http://www.tvguide.com/magazine/issues/020429/poll.asp
Or just go to www.tvguide.com and then click on "50th Anniversary" at the
left menu and then scroll down and click on "Vote for Greatest TV Show of All
Time" and then click TAGS, scroll down and click "Vote." That's all it takes.
As Aunt Bee might say, let the "will of the people" be known.

Hey gang, on the 10:00 Monday evening episode, #213, "Helen the Authoress",
they cut a couple of the funniest lines of the whole show. When Floyd and
Howard are discussing Mavis Neff, the town flirt, Floyd says when Harvey
Bunker was dating her, he was asked to give up his job as scoutmaster. To
which Howard replies, "Yes, I understand she's rather forward." It is
hilarious!! Too bad it was cut.
North on Dayton OH, on I-75, there is a road sign that says "Neff Road".
Whenever my husband and I are traveling that way, we always point it out and
comment on Harvey Bunker being asked to give up his job as scoutmaster when he
dated Mavis Neff!

This past week I was watching an Elvis Presley movie called "Paradise
Hawaiian Style", the movie was made in 1966.
While I was watching the movie I spotted two ladies from Mayberry. The
first lady was Mrs. Belden, played by Mary Treen.
She played two people on TAGS, Rose and Clara Lindsey. I knew she played
Rose, but I didn't know that she played
Clara Lindsey, I had to look that up on the website. Miss. Treen played
Rose in "The New Housekeeper", and Clara in
"Ellie for Council" and "Those Gossipin' Men". The second lady was Mrs.
Barrington, dog lover in the movie, played by Doris Packer.
She played Mrs. Wiley in "My Fair Ernest T. Bass". Ernest T. "She called
me a creecher."
Just watching the movie helped me have a little TAGS that day. Plus seeing
Hawaii from a aerial view was great.
