Subject: Mayberry population
From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

On the statue episode yesterday, Howard says Mayberry is a town of 1800
vs. Mt. Pilot, up in the 30,000s (I think). Boy, the population of our
hometown seemed to change from season to season; just another discrepancy
that makes it all the more interesting!

Hey Paul

I've been studyin' on that subject myself and I think I got her if she
don't jump. I think Floyd's monetary problems stemmed from the fact
that nobody ever actually paid him for those haircuts.

Other than the Bookie Barber episode, it was rare to see money changing
hands or that register "playing Floyd's song." Everybody from Andy,
Barney, Opie and various mayors would simply rise from the chair after
the sheet was pulled off and amble out of the building without making
even a reach for their pockets.

Floyd complained when Jim Lindsey ran a tab, but was too polite to
mention it to the folks that lived in town, figgered that they'd get
around to paying up eventually I guess.

I believe that Howard was making a little more than the 5% on his investment
of Floyd's Barbershop. He was subletting it to somebody else with or without
Floyd's knowledge; I don't know. I saw Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock in there on
the 'Star Trek' episode 'The City on the Edge of Forever.' I don't know if
this other renter was Edith Keeler (Joan Collins) the social worker or
someone else. Kirk and Edith even walk past the outside of Floyd's
Barbershop. 'Floyd's Barbershop' aired on February 13, 1967 whereas 'The City
on the Edge of Forever' aired on April 6, 1967. Apparently, Howard found
another tenant still during Floyd's tenure but before Emmett moved in.I am
sorry that Edith had to die but Earth's history and therefore Mayberry's
history would have changed for the worse. In reality, Forty Acres was razed
in 1977. That's was a shame too.

In re Howard's investment, the $65 isn't profit but the gross monthly rent.
The annual total of $780 is actually 105% of his investment, assuming he's
making a 5% return and he's factoring in all his costs, including debt
payments, taxes, etc. , which would be $743 ($780 divided by 105%).
Therefore, Howard's profit for the first year would be only $37.

In re Floyd's income from the barber shop, one TAG fan estimated Floyd's
income at $25,000 (900 monthly customers at $1.75 each plus ancillary sales
and tips). This is way yonder too high for two reasons. First , the $25,000
refers only to revenues and is not net of business expenses, such as rent,
utilities, taxes, insurance,supplies, etc.

Secondly, Floyd doesn't have the capacity to handle 900 customers in a month.
Barber shops are open five days a week (closed on Sundays and Mondays).
This means that Floyd has, on the average, 22 days monthly to work. Assuming
he works an eight hour day, he would have to cut 41 heads a day or over five
an hour to reach 900 customers a month. Given the temperament of Floyd, I
doubt he could cut any man's hair in less than twenty minutes. Maybe,
therefore, he could cut two or three heads an hour, which means about 20 a
day or 440 monthly customers. His monthly revenue from haircuts would be
$770 (440 x $1.75) and sales from other items including tips might be another
$400. At this monthly rate, Floyd's Barbershop would gross $14,040 annually
before expenses. Very likely, he cleared about $8,000 to 9,000 a year.
While not anywhere near the wealth of Charlie O'Malley or even Ben Weaver, he
and his family lived comfortably by Mayberry standards of forty years ago.

Hey Chip

Being true fans we don't bother with famine because the diner is almost
always open. We also know that there's no sense discussing the other
matter as if something is truly a pestilence "IT WILL FIND YOU"

Part of the pattern on his pajamas are sombreros. I have a still photo of
him hugging Aunt Bee and there are definitely sombreros and looks like little
people wearing sombreros riding on burros. If y'all have the "Act Like
Somebody" book it is in the front part of this book. (By the way, you can
purchase this book on-line at Weavers. I highly recommend it)

A couple of weeks ago, I asked the following trivia question: Which female
cast member once dated Bobby Diamond (Evan Hendricks, son of the butter and
egg man)?

Nobody even took a guess, so I'm declaring you all officially stumped. The
correct answer is Teri Garr, who appears very briefly in one TAGS episode:
"The Wedding."

I learned this little tidbit while watching an old episode (c. 1971-1972) of
"Celebrity Dating Game" on the Game Show Network. Teri was the contestant,
and Bobby was one of the three bachelors. She didn't pick him, but it was
revealed that they had dated in the past. They also stated he was a
champion gymnast. I don't recall what competition he'd won to become a
champion.
