Knotts Celebrates 60th H.S. Reunion
By The Associated Press

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP)--Don Knotts sat at the head
table at the 60th reunion of Morgantown High School's
Class of 1942, but it wasn't because he was an
Emmy-winning actor and star of one of television's
most beloved programs.

Knotts was the senior class president.

The 78-year-old actor, who portrayed bumbling Barney
Fife on ``The Andy Griffith Show,'' kept a low profile
Saturday as he mingled with about 60 classmates at a
local hotel.

``Hey, this doesn't have anything to do with me,''
said Knotts, whose name tag read simply ``Don Knotts,
Los Angeles, Calif.''

``Everyone here has just managed to stay friends for
all these years. That's pretty amazing,'' he said.

Knotts did take the microphone and rattle off a few
jokes.

``That's just Don,'' classmate Mary Pompili Balint
said. ``He makes it fun, but we've always had fun.
This is just a special class.''

Most of y'all said that Mark Twain was responsible for "Everybody complains
about the weather..." but I definitely heard Will Rogers say it. Maybe he
was quoting Mark Twain. Yeah - that's it - he was quoting Mark Twain.
Goober Linda - Heaven forbid that I admit I'm wrong wrong wrong.

Hello all:

I would like to share this little experience with my
TAGS family.

My son and I have had the opportunity to live out a
portion of TAGS episode "Opie the Birdman". Our
ordeal has not been as challenging as Opie's, but has
been very educational. Late in the Spring, I bought
several hanging baskets for my porch. One day in the
early Summer, I took down one basket and instead of
watering my flowers, I found a tiny bird's nest with 4
tiny eggs inside. I had noticed a couple of birds
flying around my porch recently, but I didn't think
anything of it. Since then, I have been keeping an
eye on the little song birds, making sure the mom
stayed around. My son, age 5, is just thrilled to
have our new neighbors. Every morning, we go outside
and I will take the basket down and he will tell the
birds good morning. Before it's time for us to start
our day, you can hear the little song birds chirping
for their mom and food. Anyway, my son and I popped
in my TAGS tape with the "Opie the Birdman" episode
and we watched it. It has been wonderful watching God
take care of His little creatures. It has also been
very educational for my son. He has learned something
that he will never forget. I also find it amazing
that even without water, my flowers are still living.
It will not be long before the trees will sound nice
and full.

Hey gang,

Anyone else see them Chips Ahoy Cookie Bars in the store
or commercial on TV and no think of THE Mr. Cookie Bar.
What exactly was a Mr Cookie Bar. I figure it was like
a Twix with a cookie in the center surrounded by chocolate.
Anyone know anything more?

>>>Mark Twain (Samuel L. Clemens) has often been quoted as saying:
"Everybody talks about the weather but nobody does anything about it."
(although it appears his collaborator on The Gilded Age, Charles Dudley
Warner, actually wrote the statement).
>>>

Right! Charles Dudley Warner, not Mark Twain, is the correct author of that
quote. Twain was quoting his friend Warner, but as often happens, the quote
became attached to the more famous of the two men. Another Warner quote
incorrectly attributed to Twain is "Politics makes strange bedfellows."
(Digression alert: at one point, Mark Twain, Charles Dudley Warner, and
Harriet Beecher Stowe were all neighbors in Hartford.)

Mark Twain had a lot to say about the weather. One of my favorites is
"Cold! If the thermometer had been an inch longer, we'd all have frozen to
death." Here's some further reading if anyone is interested:

Strange question, but how many times (if any) is a fan in TAGS?
>>>

I guess you mean the kind of fan used for cooling, not the kind of fan that
goes to baseball games.

Anyway, there's a circular electric fan on top of the file cabinet in the
corner of the courthouse in many episodes. Aunt Bee also cools herself with
a paper fan on the front porch occasionally, and when Goober runs the engine
of Gilly Walker's car inside the courthouse, we see the engine fan in
operation.

Thelma Lou wrote that she didn't have tickets to the
show.

Sherry Lynn and I didn't get there until Saturday
morning. We did have tickets to the show that night.
There were several people trying to sell tickets,
though I don't know how much they were asking for
them.

Might be worthwhile for folks to consider if they are
going to drive some distance without tickets, to do
the autograph signing for example, to hang around, and
see if somebody is needing to unload tickets at the
show.

Mark Twain.

Although one of my sources states there is a possibility that one of Mr.
Twain's collaborators, Charles Dudley Warner, actually WROTE the
statement, no one has ever come forward proclaiming he ever SAID it. Mark
Twain SAID the above statement many times during his speeches.

So I'll stick with ol' Mark until scholars prove different.

I remember there being a fan in the episode where Warren was sleepwalking. He
was using it to stay awake. A fan was mentioned in the episode where Barney
had the hiccups. He was supposed to sit in front of it with his mouth open.
There was one in Emmett's Fixit Shop being worked on. That's all I can think
of right now, hope it helps. By the way, I read where Don Knotts attended his
60th high school reunion in Morgantown, West Virginia. What an event that must
have been.

I thought you might enjoy this story...

I went out to lunch with a friend from work today, and we were walking side
by side along a sidewalk. An older gentleman walked between us (we
separated to make room for him to pass us) and as he went by us, he said
"bread and butter." I squealed with delight!!! That's the phrase whose
origin/meaning has been discussed many times on the Digest. I think Barney
says it in one of the early episodes. By the way, I didn't try to explain
to my friend why I was giggling to myself...she might have thought I was
"nuts."

Ya'll can chew on this one for a while.
How many episodes of TAGS were there without any scenes shot in the
courthouse? I can only think of one off the top of my head but I'm sure ya'll
will come up with more than that.

Here's a note from TAGSRWC Presiding Goober, Jim Clark, reporting on the TV
Guide poll that's been going on. --Allan

---------

I was doing my periodic check of the online TV Guide voting and it apparently
is now over. Not only did TAGS handily beat back the challenge by 60 Minutes,
but in the process, we overtook Star Trek The Next Generation to nab 9th
Place (same position that TAGS was for the TV Guide editors' rankings). Not
that any of this really matters, of course, but it's fun to see that Mayberry
fans can make our bodies a weapon and get the vote out when we want to.

This was in The Tennessean newspaper this morning.

Don Knotts, a k a Barney Fife, sat at the head table last week at the 60th
high school reunion
in Morgantown, W.Va. He was at the head of the table because Don, 78, was
senior class
