I saw in the Ebullet that Marsha and David Schevermann have broken ground to
build a replica of the Taylor home in Clear Lake Wisconsin. Does anyone know
any more about this project? I would love to know more and keep track of the
project. Anyone know ow I could email them?

We have to remember that both times Andy and Helen went on a picnic together,
there was a huge picnic basket of food which included chicken legs.
This happened on the shows when Barney wouldn't leave them alone and when
Warren had E.S.P.
She might have gone to K.F.C. and transferred the food to the picnic basket.
It would be O.K. if the K.F.C. in Mayberry would serve a leg of lamb.(Andy's
favorite dish).

Does anyone know where that scene was filmed? I recognize the scenery and it
looks like the area around a current-day Texaco I once visited on Sunset
Boulevard in Hollywood. In fact I would just about swear the highway with
the Coors truck is indeed, Sunset.

"For
instance, when you open the Taylor front door from inside, the street out

that what you are seeing inside the front door really is the living room.

Jeff, if you get a chance to check out the "Mayberry Memories" book
(available at Weaver's), on page 18 there's a good production photo of the
front porch set with Andy and Danny Thomas sitting there chatting. It's
amazing how real it looks even with the lights and production equipment
visible!

Mayberry RFD ran for three years, immediately after TAGS' initial run. Opie
would have been in high school during those three years, and therefore
living with Andy and Helen. TAGS was on for eight seasons; the seasons
corresponded with Opie's year in school (first season = first grade, etc.)

Same is true for the Courthouse inside/outside scenes. Does anyone know how
this was done?

Jeff
>>>

There were actually TWO front porches, and TWO Main Street sidewalk sets.
It's much easier to film indoors than outdoors (due to weather, lighting,
noise, etc.) and since so many episodes included shots of the Taylor's front
porch and the Courthouse / Barber Shop exteriors, they built duplicates of
those sets.

Here's how it worked (try to keep up, this gets confusing -- pretend you're
in Mayberry): When we're inside the Taylor's home and we look out the front
door, what we're really looking at is nothing but a backdrop (painted
curtain). The backdrops changed over the years; they had to make do with
whatever the studio had on hand. If we could stand in the Taylors' yard and
look in through the window, we would see nothing but an empty building,
because the interior sets were all on soundstages, and not actually inside
the buildings we see when we walk down the street.

Now, to the duplicate porches. If a scene required someone to approach the
Taylors' porch from the sidewalk or driveway, they used the real porch
attached to the outside of the house. If a scene shows people on the porch
but we can't see any of the yard, then that was filmed on the "fake" porch.
This porch was constructed indoors on a sound stage. If you look in through
the windows, you can see the living room, or at least a facsimile of it.

All of the above also applies to the courthouse / barber shop. If we see
characters sitting on the bench in front of the barber shop but we can't see
the street, then that scene was filmed on the duplicate Main Street set.
It's possible to look in through the windows and see representations of the
courthouse and grocery store interior. If you were on the 40 Acres back lot
and stood in front of the "real" barber shop and walked inside, you'd find
yourself standing inside the empty shell of a building.

Hope this helps,
Paul

Answer: Where is the benzoate?
>>>

Right! Here's the whole thing:

$300 level
Ellie: Uncle Fred, where's the benzoate?
Fred: Bottom shelf, behind the ipecac.
(episode: Irresistible Andy)

A couple of folks got the next one right too:

$400 level
Andy: You was in the Army, wasn't you Barn?
Barney: You know darn well I was, Andy
(episode: Quiet Sam)

Now, for the $500 level (Blue -- green -- danger!) Noel is on the right
track here:

>>>What is "Warren (and his ESP) talking to Goober at the Diner trying to
see the danger that awaits Andy and Helen on their picnic to Myer's Lake" in
Episode #169 (A Warning from Warren)>>>

...but that's not 100% correct, since I asked for the quote that immediately
preceded the answer. Here's how it went:

Goober: How's your hamburger, Warren?
Warren: Blue -- green -- danger!
(episode: A Warning from Warren)

Hi there,

My wife and I have watched a couple of the Mayberry RFD episodes and we
wanted to know what the initials RFD mean?

Goober-What about me and Lydia?

Barney-Yea, what about you and Lydia!

(I love it when Barney gets mad!)

RFD stand for "Rural Free Delivery". A long time ago, residents of rural areas
had to drive to town to pick up their mail. With RFD, the mail was delivered
to their residences.

I love TAGS,and have always appriciated the fact that the
dialog on the show was very authentic(which stands to reason
with Andy being from North Carolina). One thing I never
understood though,is that on the show soft drinks are
called "pop". I'm a first generation northerner living in
Michigan. My parents were from N.C. & Kentucky. I think
Michigan is one of the few places you'll hear people
say "pop". Whenever I've used the word down south, people look
at me like I just stepped out of a space ship!.......Just an
observation..................John Saylor [EMAIL PROTECTED]

The initials stand for Rural Free Delivery, a precursor to the Route system of

Why is Otis absent from the color episodes of TAGS? I know Floyd is absent due
to his health and Gomer went off to the Marines, but I never heard what
happened to Otis. I did see a show once where Andy returned to Mayberry and
Otis was a Good Humor man. I think in that same show Thelma Lou asked Helen
why Barney never proposed. Does anyone know what that show was?

<< At the time Helen made that statement , she was very likely only a couple

five years between that time and her wedding, she had a lot of time to

Well noted Jay! I had noticed that before and thought the same thing. It was
the late '70s when we finally got the mystical Coors in Raleigh no less, as I
was a freshman at NCSU and received a case as a present. (The drinking age
was a bit lower back then.)

RFD stands for Rural Free Delivery. I can't remember the whole explanation
of the thing, but that's what it stands for.

Note to Goober Linda: I used to trade everything on my tray for everyone's

I thought it was Helen who cooked the spaghetti but it was her uncle's
recipe. I could be wrong. "Dinner at Eight" was the name of the episode
and it's still my favorite "colorized" TAGS.
