Awwww Mac - you're always flaunting your education in my face. Maybe I'll
change my wording to "episodes in color". I have a TV that projects programs
in color as well as colorized. I can de-color (or is it decolorize) the
episodes in color by turning the little knob on my TV that says "color" all
the way to the left. Then I'm left with B&W and I can "plike" (Texas for
"play-like") that they were/ are really and truly B&W shows (it's
therepedic).

You write a delighful critique of my literary efforts. It reminds me of my
old English teacher, Mrs. Batts, who scribbled all over everything I turned
it.

Mari Ellen - your memories of school days was just about the sweetest thing
this ol' Goober's every read. My eyes got all wet. I turned my thoughts
from the horrible vegetable chowder to the nice things I remember about
school. I was fortunate enough to enjoy the morning devotionals given by
students over the PA system and the principal saying "God Bless You" right
out loud like there was nothing wrong with it. Like you, my favorite
Mayberry song is Miss Peggy and Andy singing "Down In The Valley". We were
fortunate enough to meet her and hear her sing it on stage at one of the
Mayberry reunions. She was a real special lady. I wish she had been a
regular on the show. Mr. Goob had a big crush on her.

...But didn't they ever say why Barney never proposed to Thel *before*
Raleigh and the demolition guy entered the picture? I don't remember hearing
that addressed in the movie, except by implication (Barney wanted to be more
successful, i.e. the sheriff, before he would feel right about it).

I have a glass bottle with a built in marble stopper, which is classed as a
"pop" bottle. It was so named because when you were ready to drink it, you
pushed down on the marble to open it, and it made a "pop" sound, hence the
pop bottle.

I have been watching some episodes on GoodTV lately, I had not seen any since
I was a kid, and I have been enjoying them very much. But I have two questions
that I hope someone here can answer. First, do they ever say who the sherriff
is now that Andy's gone? Second, why wasn't Ken Berry in the Return to
Mayberry movie?

Thanks,

BTW, I moved to Georgia 3 years ago, and people still think it's funny when I
say I'm gonna have a drink of "pop".

Subject: Trained Noticers Needed
Date: Sun, 25 Aug 2002 10:35:11 -0400
From: "Mooradian, Todd" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

I am a professor in the School of Business at the College of William &
Mary (in Williamsburg, Virginia). I am writing a book, "Leadership
Lessons from Mayberry," about a nurturing, community-building leadership
style appropriate for contemporary service organizations (e.g.,
quick-service restaurants, retail, etc.) with Andy Taylor as the unifying
metaphor. I'm working with a publisher now and I'm quite a ways along,
hoping to go to press by the New Year.

I'm having a hard time connecting a few things to specific vignettes from
the show, although I feel sure that the scenes are there, and I wonder if
I could enlist the ‘trained noticers’ here at WBMUTBB to help
me with these. As the TVLand schedule moves back to the black-and-whites
I’m hoping this will be a good time to ask for help.

I'm looking for examples of:

1) Scenes in which Andy is firm and enforces discipline -- the lesson is
that one must impose firm and certain discipline moderated, of course, by
common sense. I have the examples of common sense over strict rules (for
example, in Barney’s Sidecar, Andy has allowed the truckers a few
miles-an-hour over the speed limit while Barney argues that you give
‘em 35, they’ll take 40, etc.). What I need are a couple of
examples in which Andy holds the line and unwaveringly firm.

2) Scenes in which Andy does tasks/chores that he could have asked Barney
to do - he’s clearly not above doing the work himself and he
doesn't ask Barney to do things he won’t do himself. I know there
are scenes in which he sweeps the courthouse but I’ve been watching
for them as I review the tapes and haven’t seen one since deciding
I wanted one for the book.

3) Examples of Andy or Barney doing things beyond their duties for the
citizens of Mayberry - like when Andy has Barney go take in someone's
laundry (which episode is that?).

I may have some other holes come up before this book is completed but
these are the ones I've been trying to fill as I work through the current
draft.

By the way, the six lessons of the book are: (A) People First
(friendships matter, support and encourage, etc.); (B) Respect Everyone
(let people know they're important, needed and appreciated, etc.); (C)
Firm, Consistent, and Flexible Discipline; (D) Unwavering Integrity; (E)
Careful, Thorough Communication; and (F) Maintain Perspective/A Livable
Pace. The model that is being fleshed out by those six rules is a basic
framework of applied leadership ("supervision") defined by two axes:
attention to people and attention to structure/tasks. The leadership
style that I advocate and that Andy Taylor personifies (and Barney often
illustrates "in the breach") is consistently high on attention to people
but flexible on attention to structure/tasks (sometimes strict, sometimes
loose, depending on the situation and person).

I know that some may see this book as derivative of the bible lessons,
and at one level it really doesn’t matter, but I will tell you in
defense of the originality of this project that I had been working with
an agent as early as 1997, before Joey Fann’s wonderful book came
out or the classes began at the Twickenham Church in Huntsville.
Nevertheless, while I realize that the two projects are similar, they are
distinguished by the fact that I am presenting secular lessons (and in
several ways quite different lessons) on supportive, people-oriented
leadership, restoring a sense of connection/community, and a humane pace
and perspective for the modern workplace.

I hope all you trained noticers will be able to help me fill-in the
lingering holes where I can’t come up with good, specific examples
of behaviors I intend to include in this book.

Thanks in advance for you kind consideration of this inquiry.

Best regards,
Todd

I've noticed that in the episode about Aunt Bee the Warden, when Otis is
chopping wood it seems dark outside - as if the sun had gone behind the clouds.
That's the only episode that I have noticed a change in the lighting.

Very true Gloria. "Pop vs. soda" was recently discussed to the point of
exhaustion on the Digest. However, if anyone has the energy to discuss this
some more, WBMUTBB has other options for previously discussed topics like
this - Miss Crump's Bulletin Board, Taylor's Front Porch and The Golden
Door to Good Fellowship.

Thank you to Allan for providing such a diverse website for us and we can
support that by putting it all to use in a case like this.

My nephew, who grew up in Mississippi, tells me that in the south every soft
drink-regardless of the brand-is called a coke. As in, "What kind of coke do
you want?" "I'll have a root beer."(or whatever).

Hi all,
Boy!!! That is picky, someone says something a little different or misses
the meaning and looses their head! Lighten up a little. jeez!! Nip that in
the Bud!!
As a matter of fact I believe that when referred to as created in black and
white and then added color is called colorized. So "colored" is not far from
correct! Put that in your smipe and Poke it!

At the risk of violating a number rule, I'd kinda like to weigh in on
this. I'm old enough to have watched the original run of TAGS. Being a
North Carolinian, it was like it was MY show. Anyway, not to throw too
much baggage around, but I was the child of an alcoholic parent. Quite
honestly, there were times when I didn't find Otis very funny. Now, with
some years on me, I can appreciate Otis and the way he was loved and
treated by the good citizens of Mayberry. I just wanted to throw in this
perspective; and, as we all know, not everyone has to see everything the
same way. I learned that in Mayberry.

I hope I'm not being sensitive. One thing I can't stand is for someone to
call me sensitive.

Folks,

Please remember that we have NEW members EVERY DAY here in our little corner
of Mayberry and because of that we will have the same series of questions
repeat themselves every now and again. It's not unusual for things like the
"pop vs. soda" converstion to cycle through every year.

PLEASE be just as kind to folks the 50th time a question is asked as you were
the 1st time it's asked because YOU were new here at one time and YOU didn't
know the answer either. We don't want an moulages but lets not forget that
this is suppose to be a "Friendly town."

Anyway...as for me...here in Alabama..everything is a "coke". "You want a
coke?" "Sure." "What flavor you want? Coke, Pepsi, RC, Dr. Pepper?"

With all of the talk about OTIS in the color episode, I thought it was

episode. Though OTIS only appeared in two color episodes, can anyone think

At the end of the episode "Goober Goes to an Auto Show" where Andy, Aunt
Bee, Opie and Goober stop for gas before hitting the road and discover
that Roy Swanson is really a mechanic instead of a senior VP of
Amalgamated Motors, does anyone know the precise location for this gas
station where it was filmed? Everyone knows the familiar scene with the
Coors truck passing by in the background (a blooper for trained
noticers). This is one of the few outside scenes that were filmed at
actual locations outside the 40-acre lot. Another that comes to mind is
the airfield where Aunt Bee takes her flying lessons in "Aunt Bee's Big
Moment." What airfield was used for that episode? You can see the
mountains in the near distance during that episode too.

Paul, in regard to your explanation about interiors and exteriors, there was
one shot that always puzzled me. When the guys are inside the barber shop
looking over to the bus stop when Ellen Brown, the manicurist, gets off, the
camera is in the shop shooting the guys looking out the window onto the 40
Acres street with the bus parked across the street. It had to be shot at 40
Acres, but it is obviously an inside shot.
