One of the entries in the Digest really brought back memories for me. When
I was little (and until a few years ago) the best hot dogs in town could be
had at The Falls Street Cafe, better known to us on the mill hill as The Cat
Drive (that's another story). Anyway, it was a great treat to go with my
dad (it wasn't proper for women to be seen in the Cat Give at that time) to
get some hot dogs and sit on the stool at the counter. Equally as vivid was
dad giving me a nickel to put in the juke box so the whole place could howl
to Andy Griffith and "What is Was, Was Football."

Hey Everybody,
Dan made mention of soft drinks being called "dopes". Is Dan from
Tennessee? I had a former pastor whose family called soft drinks "dopes"
and they were from around Knoxville, Tennessee. Here in Arkansas we call
soft drinks "Coke". Also, to answer the question of Andy seeming grouchy
in the colored episodes. I heard on this message board one time that
after Don Knotts left, Andy was not as happy because he and Don fed off
of each other and Andy just was not as excited about the show after Don
left.
Have a great Mayberry Day!

That's in "The Rivals." I'd try to explain the scene to you, but I might
not have time. I might be too busy explaining why Barney wants to go to the
duck pond.

My recollection is that at the beginning of "Return to Mayberry" Andy
explained that he had at some point become a Postal Inspector and worked out
of the Cleveland office.

Not to make a big moulage about this, but while it doesn't today, when
it was originally created in 1886 as a "brain and nerve tonic" it
contained some amount from the coca leaves used in the formula. It
wasn't unusual or illegal at that time for coca leaves to be used in
tonics. By the time of Mayberry, there was nothing to worry about
since the formula was changed by the 1930's.

'Round here in Dee-troit we had stores like that that sold "Town Club"
pop - just like you said. They didn't have huckleberry smash but most
everything else you could imagine.
I haven't seen that stuff in 20+ years - don't think they make it
anymore. I think it was locally produced but maybe it was in Orlando
too.

Yes, I often felt Andy was a bit grouchy in some of the colour episodes.
I guess he was just missing Barney like we all were.

Coca-Cola was named back in 1885 for its two "medicinal" ingredients: extract
of coca leaves and kola nuts. Just how much cocaine was originally in the
formulation is hard to determine, but the drink undeniably contained some
cocaine in its early days.

I always loved the names too- Floyd is especially wonderful when he describes
them! As for me carbonated beverages were called "pop" when I lived in Chicago
and are now called "soda" and "co-cola" (coke-cola?) now that I live in the
Florida Panhandle. Wow do people look at me when I forget and say "pop". Also
shopping carts became "buggies" and manual transmissions became "standards"
The Coke machine in front of our store doesn't have the magic of Wally's.

When we first moved
here there was a soda shop where you got a bin similar to the old wooden
Coke boxes. It held 24 bottles and you went around the shop picking out
what you wanted to fill the bin. I don't remember what brand they were
either but they had unusual flavors like pineapple and the bottles looked
like those at Wally's.

Hi Aunt Bee, I'm not sure what brand you are referring to, but here in Indiana
in the 60's, there was a brand called Nehi. They had grape, orange, raspberry,
and several other flavors that don't come to mind right now. I don't believe
they had cola though. I do also remember Double Cola, because they had
contests where there was a "foil" coin in the caps of some bottles which you
could redeem for cash. John Skaggs

David, I think so too, but it was probably having to put up with Warren!
Warren got on my nerves. Malcolm Merriweather would have made a better Deputy,
and Earnest T should have beaten up Warren. (Just kidding) John

Hey folks....remember the rules.....
I feel like with the number of new members we've gotten lately that it's time
to restate "The Rules" for everybody. You old-timers might want to read
through this just to refresh your memories and I think it's good for all of
us to try and remember these tried and true rules.---- Allan
From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hey Everybody,
Boy, things have really been growing here in out little corner of Mayberry!!
Because of that I think it's time to remind everyone what WBMUTBB is all
about:
We all know what Mayberry is about but do we realize why it is that we all
visit there everyday? I know that the characters are great but more than
that, they're friends. We "know" these people and it's just a joy to visit
them every chance we get to watch them as they work their way through getting
locked in a cell because the door "clangs shut" or any of the other wonderful
situations they face. Things always work out in a wonderful way leaving a
smile on our faces.
Mayberry is an escape from the day-to-day trials we all face. A short trip
to a place where every body cares about one another and where we can forget,
for a while, the fact that "real life" isn't as much like that as we'd like.
I started WBMUTBB back in 1990, along with several other good folks, and
since then I've tried to make it as much like a "corner of Mayberry" as
possible. I wanted this place to be somewhere folks could go and forget
about the outside world and relax by reading about Andy, Barney, Opie, Aunt
Bee, and the rest of our Mayberry family.
To try and make that happen I've required everyone who wanted to join to tell
us a little about themselves so we could get to know them just a little bit.
After all, in Mayberry everyone knew everybody else and how can we have a
community without having at least some idea about our neighbors?
I've also had a couple of rules here and I try to enforce them.
Of course Rule #1 is...you guessed it...Obey all rules.
Rule #2 is this: Talk about the things you like about Mayberry..not things
you don't like.
I know some folks forget this second rule sometimes and they don't really
understand WHY I think Rule #2 is important so let me just give you an
example. Let's say I were to say, "Boy, I really hate Barney. I mean, look
how stupid he is and poor Andy has to put up with him." If I said that
(and meant it) what are the first things that happen to you?
First you'd feel like, "Man, that guys a jerk!" Then you'd get aggravated at
this guy talking about your Favorite character (and friend), Barney Fife.
Even if Barney's not your very favorite character, you'd likely be upset
about this guy talking about your neighbor.
I've never heard anyone say anything like that about Barn but I have about
other characters and folks forget that just because they don't like a
particular character doesn't mean that character isn't someone elses
favorite. You see, if I talk about your favorite character saying negative
things about 'em it takes your fun away.
I think that's enough about Rule #2 and I hope you all understand the rule.
It's not to take away from your fun but to encourage you all to tell us about
what's fun to you and share your good feelings with others.
We have something special here. It's something you don't find often on the
internet. No "flames", no "fighting", no "foul language." We have a place
that children and adults can come and enjoy themselves.
Mayberry is a wonderful place and I'm just glad to be a part of this little
corner of it.
Your Friend and neighbor,
Allan Newsome

I remember Barney mentioning a "Number 2 Amber Alert" which meant either
Barney or Andy awake at all times. The child abduction Amber Alert
originated in Arlington, TX (located between Ft. Worth and Dallas). It
was created in response to the abduction and murder of a 9 year old
Arlington girl named Amber. That crime is still unsolved. It is a shame
that such a thing even has to exist. How I long to live in Mayberry
where 3 year old children could wander around town in a cowboy outfit
eating a peanut butter and jelly sandwich without being in any danger at
all. That is what makes TAGS so appealing - the escape from the real
world into the wonderful world of Mayberry. Mary Grace Gossage"No,
thanks, Leon."
