I have been reading the debates over what soft drinks are called. We
always said "Coke" no matter what & it's only in the last 10 yrs. or so
that people get touchy & say something like "We only have Pepsi" in a
snarly voice as though they're insulted. I did notice, however, that my
black friends ask for a "soda water". As a kid my favourite drink was
'Chocolate soldier" bottled in my hometown of Opelousas, LA because you
could drink it all the way down w/o stopping. As an adult I prefer RC
Cola w/ or w/o a moon pie.
Thanks for giving me something interesting to read daily,

Hello Friends, Neighbors Fellow Citizens of Mayberry, Honored Guests, Ladies
of the Women's Auxiliary
I noticed a TAGS sighting that I want to verify. A very famous Lucy Episode
is the one where she advertises for Vitameatavegamin. It is to Lucy fans,
as the Pickle Story is to TAGS watchers. The guy who keep coaching her
appears to be Roger, from the Esquire Club. Can anyone confirm this?
It interesting also that she gets "gassed" ala Barney in this same episode.
Badge Trivia---I noticed in watching an episode recently that Barney wore
his badge near the center of his shirt, right next to his tie, while Andy
wore his right over the left pocket, centered over the pocket. It almost
looked like he (Barney)was covering up a spot or something with the badge.
Maybe it was for unencumbered access to his bullet. Trained Noticers?
Also, there are times when Andy's shoulder patch has a six pointed star, but
his badge has 5 points.
I enjoyed the explanations of inside (sound stage) and outside
(backlot)camera work/backdrops etc. No wonder the consistency expert kept
busy...just trying to make sure things flowed properly in a given show.
That may have also have been a reason we see Opie and Aunt Bee in the same
outfits so much?? (to keep consistency simpler)
No Coffee, Tea, Punch, Soda, Pop, Coke, Sodie, er Soda Pop for me Thank YEW!

I was enjoying the "Mr. McBeeVee" episode the other night and noticed the
expresson on Aunt Bee's face when Andy came downstairs after talking to Opie.
Aunt Bee had such compassion on her face and relief when Andy told her and
Barney that he did not spank Opie. It was such a beautiful thing to see, and
reinforced my thoughts about what a good actress Aunt Bee/Frances Bavier really
was. I have been noticing the more "touching" moments on TAGS lately,
especially the ones between Andy and Opie. Remember the time Barney testified
for Andy when he was accused of a myriad of charges by the newspaper publisher,
comes to mind also. I guess besides all the laughter, this has to be one of my
favorite parts of the show.
.........maybe we could hang out in the lobby of the YMCA in Raleigh....we
might see someone using the public typewriter or eating a pear...........

>>> ... with the exception, I suppose, of Andy during the first season, did
any TAGS characters use the term "y'all" when they spoke?
Gomer did, but then he was almost the only person in Mayberry who spoke with
a Southern accent (Jim Nabors is from Alabama, so it came natural to him).
An example is in "Barney and the Cave Rescue." Andy thanks Gomer for
keeping an eye on the courthouse, and Gomer replies "... y'all don't get a
chance to get out too much."

Mitch Jayne is not only the bass player of the Mayberry's Darling Boys, but
in "real life" he is also an outstanding writer and lecturer. Several years
ago, he wrote a fascinating article about how folks in The Ozarks have all
but lost their traditional manner of speaking (his theory applies equally
well to any local group of people, not just those in The Ozarks.)
According to Mitch, the number one cause was: television. For the first
time, citizens in formerly isolated areas could hear and see people who
acted completely differently than they did. When folks who had never
travelled more than a few miles from their homes started tuning in to TV
broadcasts from all parts of the country, regional dialects and local
mannerisms began to disappear.

Dear Franklin; Sorry I haven't been able to write sooner...got a little
behind on my digest since school started. Actually I am not a writer but
love to write; I teach photography/ digital imaging at a community college.
Thank you so much for your kind thoughts on my writing: I am so glad if my
thoughts brought you comfort or joy; I know this is the heart of
Mayberry...the little things that really are what we cherish. I loved the
experience I had growing up where and when I did and I am very grateful for
this. I often drive up North (about 100 miles from where I live now) to
just walk through the little, rural cemetary where my parents are buried and
remember those kind hearts of my childhood. Thank you again for your kind
words; it meant alot to me. God bless you. Mari Ellen

Subject: Harvey Bullock and Batman
To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
In anticipation of the upcoming 2002 'Mayberry Days', I found it interesting
to note that Harvey Bullock has a fictional namesake. Harvey Bullock is a
character on "Batman: The Animated Series", which ran from 1992-1995. He is a
longtime detective on the Gotham Police Force. He is seen overweight,
unshaven, poorly dressed, and always chewing on an old toothpick. Some may
perceive this character as rude and disgusting. Detective Bullock uses
questionable methods in upholding the law and is not a big fan of Batman.
Although he does not really like Batman, Harvey has sometimes called on him
when needed. The last script that the real Harvey Bullock wrote for TAGS was
'The Legend of Barney Fife.' It originally aired in January 1966, the same
month that "Batman", the television series originally aired.

Was the barn and paddock last night in the Frankie Flint the sane one as
in the Real McCoys?
I'm very glad this board has rules. Have you read others? They
discredit the fine shows that they mention. The Father Knows Best board
is so hateful and has degenerated into a vulgar exchange between two
people. As Aunt Bee suggested, kind and gentle ways are habits as
easily as bad manners!
