It does get cold in the south...cold enough for jackets, cold enough even for
fireplaces. Why heck, we even had a blizzard here back in '93.
Now California, that's another story. "Leave It to Beaver" is in the same
boat, not once did we ever see Beaver & Wally building a snowman. Quite
possibly because both shows were shot on back lots in sunny California.

Here's my idea: Base the whole thing on that famous episode in which the
man's car stalls in Mayberry and he can't get out. Take him somewhere that
there's no cell phone service, a two-man police force (and one lives with his
aunt), the barber, repair people, etc. all know each other, and the entire
town comes to a standstill because two old women are talking about their foot
being asleep!
"I wonder what causes that!"

One of the many things I loved about TAGS was that it was made in a more
innocent time when everybody wasn't required to be so (sniff sniff)
"politically correct". Andy could stand on the porch and smoke a cigarette or
Opie could play with a cap pistol without everyone making a big deal out of it.
The only thing is, I wish Barney hadn't referred to drunk people as being
"gassed"- cause my last name is"Gast" !
Trying not
to be sensitive about it!
Love
to you all!

Aunt Bee was born December 14th, 1902, and the show aired on October 3rd,
1960. I guess that would have made Aunt Bee right around 58.
Can't wait for Mayberry Days,

Hey Carol,
I am not from North Carolina, but I know they can have some very cold
weather and big snows there. Mount Mitchell which is in North Carolina is
the highest mountain east of the Mississippi River. The Blue Ridge and
Smokey Mountain area's of North Carolina can get really cold and very
deep snow. I think you outta come visit the South during the winter
sometime. I live in Arkansas and in December of 2000 we had temps down in
the single digits and wind chills below zero and ice and snow everywhere
during Christmas. Parts of the South do get bone chilling cold. We start
wearing jackets about October until April here in Arkansas. Anyway, I
will quit talking about the weather.
Have a great Mayberry Day and Go Hogs Go!

Subject: Nesselrode Pie
In "Aunt Bee's Mayberry Cookbook" there is a recipe for Clara's Nesselrode Pie
submitted by Susan Burgesser of Dover, MN. The main ingredients seem to be
unflavored gelatin, light cream, sugar and (gasp)2 tablespoons of rum! I still
don't know what a nesselrode is.
Aunt Bee:(To Andy about Opie) That boy, I declare he's got the sweetest tooth I
ever saw. You know if he had his way, what he'd want for lunch? Two slices of
apple pie between two pieces of apple pie and slab of apple pie for dessert.
Andy: Now that's not surprising, Aunt Bee, considering the green thumb you've
got for apple pies.
Aunt Bee: Nonsense. He's just apple pie crazy.

>>>Other shows are that way. There is only one actor on
"That 70's show" who has a true Wis-cahn-sin accent,
and Dennis Franz of NYPD Blue lives in NY, but has a
heavy Shi-cah-go accent, and no one on "Grounded for
life" has a N. New Jersey accent.<<<<<
On TAGS, Barney, Andy, Goober, Gomer and others were all born and raised in
Mayberry, so they should have had southern accents. On NYPD Blue and probably
some of the others, we aren't told exactly where the characters are from, so
they could live in one place but not be originally from there, and their
accents wouldn't match. You hear all kinds of accents in New York City. Just
a thought.

Subject: The Diner
Headed up Hwy 14 above Greer, SC on my last trip to the peach
orchard for the year, I passed a new sign in front of a restaurant
that is just north of Tooter Town (I kid you not). The restaurant
has been there but it has been renamed.....are you ready?.....the
Mayberry Diner. Since the orchard closed at 7 and it takes a
while a pick at half bushel, I didn't have time to stop and see if
Olive was working.
