Andy and Barney sang "There is a Fountain Filled with Blood" (not "Lose All
Their Guilty Stains") in the courthouse. The Darlings sang "Leaning on the
Everlasting Arms" at the wedding in the country where Barney portrayed
Ernest T. Bass' "bride." Andy, Barney and Malcolm Tucker sang "Church in
the Valley by the Wildwood" on the front porch in the "Man in a Hurry"
episode (one of the classics of all the shows). Andy and Ellie sang "Away
in a Manger" (accompanied by Ben Weaver, played by Will Wright) in the
episode where Ben kept trying to get himself arrested to share Chirstmas in
the jail. There was also the episode where Barney and Andy sang to Otis to
get him to stop drinking. It wasn't a hymn from the book, but was just as
effective.

One of the classics that deserves mention was when Aunt Bee asked the
assembled multitudes to join in the "Italian National Anthem," which turned
out to be "Santa Lucia." Don't forget good ole 13A.

Best of luck to you and yours.

Though this is not about TAGS, I feel Andy Griffith's performance in the
terrific Elia Kazan movie classic, "A Face in the Crowd" was probably his
best acting apart from TAGS, and worthy of an Oscar nomination, at least.

I happened to catch one of its recent re-airings on AMC the other day and
couldn't help but notice the similarites between Andy's "Lonesome" Rhodes
character and Bill Clinton. Though I'm certainly no fan of Clinton's I don't
say this particularly out of malice, just out of fascination over the
coincidence that the two are so parallel.

Consider: a young fellow from Arkansas from humble origins learns that
through his natural charisma he can command and influence a steadily
increasing audience of loyal followers, who are ignorant or dismissive of his
moral shortcomings, and eventually gets involved in presidential politics.
He refuses to remain faithful to the woman who is devoted to him and is
crucial to his success behind the scenes. Finally, his careless actions and
delusions of invincibility result in his downfall.

I'm sure there are more parallels I've failed to mention, and I know that
there are some dissimilarities, but I thought it was interesting to note.

Mayberry says thanks, and happy motoring!

My fav catch phrase (at least the one we use around the house most often) is
"Who you callin' CREATURE??!!" Or, maybe, from Barney trying to get cars to
move "go-go-GO!"

They are both staples around here in northern Indiana.

Hey everybody. It's been a whi;e sense I wrote in, but when I saw Paul's post
of triples one came to mind right away. In the pickle episode, when Aunt Bee
said she was going to enter her pickles, Barney, Opie, Andy, and even Aunt Bee
said "These". That might be considered Quadruple times, but it's the one I
thought of. Well got to go and get ready to leave for Myrtle Beach tomorrow
and check out Don Knotts and Tim Conway at the Alabama Theatre. Can't wait!

Just a note to thank our TAGS contributors for a
monent of Mayberry in my day. Although I lack the
sense of humor and noticer qualities of our regular
contributing neighbors I very much enjoy the respite.

Nothing like sitting on Andy's porch after one of Aunt
Bea's wonderful Sunday dinners. With Andy strumming
the guitar, harmonizing with Barney and having The Man
In
a Hurry chime in with The Little Brown Church in The
Vale!

Very good question Thel! First of all let me correct my mistake. The
author I was quoting is Tom Hill, not Hall (or was it Barney Fike?)

I am just guessin here as a writer wannabe (see my stories in Fan Fiction)
http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/anewsome/private/fanfiction.htm and
reader of a few TAGS books, but I would say that its more of an intuitive
thing that people like Mr. Hill later analyze and label. Just the nature of
his book makes it seem like much of what he says is just his opinions and
compilations. In his opening paragraph of this section he says "But like
music, comedy is a deeply formulatic and systematic art form. Without the
underlying mathematics, there could be no comedy. Thus, the tools of math
and science can help us understand comedy better. (he doesn't quote anyone
else)

There may be some principles that they followed, but I believe it was more
from experience, and seeing what worked (for them, comedians and other
writers) ...than sort of taking a textbook approach. Hill's work seem like
more of an after-the-fact analysis.

In Mayberry 101, writer Everett Greenbaum is quoted by Dr. Brower regarding
episode #118 Andy's Vacation. "While Barney and Gomer search for the
prisoner, we used the old visual gag of having them circle a tree, each
thinking the other is the prisoner. This was a very tired routine, and the
weakest part of the show" In the epilogue, Barney is reading a newspaper
article that reports the arrest of the convict. Barney discovers his name
is misspelled. Greenbaum is further quoted "We repeated the gag of
misspelling Barney's name. We first introduced it in the Bank Job. Barney
constantly thirsted for publicity. When the paper misspelled his name,
F-I-K-e, it always worked"

Speaking of textbook, and I don't want to sound too much like Bob Rogers
here, or Howard Sprague (with his book about the criminal mind) but just a
footnote that we may have wandered from "Catchphrases" to "Favorite
memorable phrases" (which is fine, good topic also). A Catchphrase, by
definition, is a "very minor joke that acquires resonance only through
repetition." So "Nip it in the Bud" is a Catchphrase due to repetition but
"I've got the magazines to swing it" is a one-time "favorite memorable
phrase"

Thanks for the "triple" challenge Paul, I'll have to put the bucket on for
that one.

OK, here's a formula that I can't recall being used on TAGS. "The Spit
take" Someone is given surprising or infuriating information right as they
are taking a drink, and the result is a spritz or gagging on the drink". I
recall Barney gagging a little on Mulberry squeezin's, but that was more due
to the content of the jug.

She'll take my finger!

I loved reading all the classic lines and catch phrases. As Charlie Varney
(just for plain guzzlin') said, there are just way too many to remember!! Some
of my all time favorite lines are (most of them are "Barney-isms"):

Barney: "As my old voice teacher used to say, 'A choir without it's tenor is
like a star without it's glimmer.' You know who used to say that? My old
voice teacher. You know, the teacher I had when I studied voice."

Barney: "It's no use, Andy.....can you tell a bird to just go 'chirp, chirp,
chirp'? Naw, Andy....I'm like a bird. I was born to sing!"

Otis: "I ain't in and I ain't out. I'm in the twilight zone!"
"I came to fill my vase."
"Barney's in jail, Barney's in jail!"

Barney(his "Pickle Story" monologue): "It's perfectly natural. Everybody
shaves!"

Barney(referring to the women at Mrs. Wiley's party): "Dogs Andy; nothing but
dogs. Fly a quail through here and every one of 'em would point!"

>From "The Shoplifter"
Andy: "Well, in the store I bumped into her and she clanked. And little old
ladies ought never to clank."
Barney: "Unless they're headed for the clink."

Floyd (to Barney): "Better phone him, Al."

Skippy: "Shut up, Bernie, just shut up!!

Hello all --

I did a Google search for "Andy Griffith" + DVD and came up with quite a few
matches.

The very first was for Video Universe, which seems to offer a very good
selection of single DVDs as well as sets of 2, 3 or 5. Of course, I can't
vouch for quality or content, but it would seem to be worth checking into.

The character was actually named Jesse Earle Hagen, but of course he was
named for Earle Hagen, the Maestro of Mayberry. Jesse was said to play
bass, so he must have been a tuba player. In band music, the tuba part
often has the word "basses" on it instead of "tuba." The real Earle Hagen
is a trombonist.

Could someone fill me in on what was happenin' please.

I thought everyone would find this interesting.

George "Goober" Lindsey will be appearing in Panama City Beach FL at Gulf
World Marine Park. The event is called Legends Fest and will also feature
country singers Gene Watson and Jeannie Seely as well as Ralph Emery from
TNN. Todd Herendeen with The Follow that Dream Band will perform a Tribute
To Elvis.

It is "tentatively" scheduled for November 8, 2002 with a show at 5pm and
8:30pm. You can contact Gulf World Marine Park at 850-234-5271 for more
information or try their website www.gulfworldmarinepark.com, however as of
today, they didn't have any info up there.

I called about it today, and it appears that the show may be delayed a few
days, but I will post details as I find them out. I am in daily contact
with one of the owners of the park and he assures me that he will keep me up
to date on this. George Lindsey's schedule has him at Rock Crusher Canyon
Amphitheater in Crystal River, Fla. Saturday, November 9.

For those that don't know, Panama City Beach is in the Northwest Florida
panhandle between Pensacola and Tallahassee. About 100 miles south of
Dothan, Alabama.

I have no vested interest in promoting this event, I just thought I would
share the info with everybody in WBMUTBB. If there is anyway I can help by
offering directions to our area, hotel recommendations, etc. let me know, as
I live in a showplace at the entrance to town, bought and paid for with
confederate money. Just Kidding.
