I am a 43 year old, (what else) law enforcement officer in the Orlando,
Florida area. I started my career in Boone, NC near the area of East
Tennessee where I was raise. So, TAGS holds a special bond for me. I have
been watching for many a year, and own an extensive tape collection.
I also teach in the local Community College Criminal Justice program, and
TAGS is a big part of the curriculum I teach, as a whole new generation of
officers learn that you... "go not so much by the book, as by the heart." As
one of my students approached one night, I was deep in thought at a crime
scene. He looked very intently and asked, "What would Andy do?"

My husband of almost 35 years Bob and I watch TAGS every single night. We
have 36 60-hour VHS tapes of episodes that we began recording in 1984. We
call it "programming ourselves for goodness," as we set the timer on our
bedroom TV and watch a tape as we fall asleep. We've attended a Bible study
that was on TAGS. What a wonderful way to share the Lord! My goal now is to
develop a class of my own to teach here in Colorado Springs to a small groups

Bible study. Thanks for the digest; it's great to hear from all who are fans
and the little things they notice in the episodes.

>>>OK, here's a formula that I can't recall being used on TAGS. "The Spit
take...."

Otis does a spit take in the epilogue of "Barney and the Governor." Earlier
in the episode, Otis had added liquor to the water in the courthouse crock.
He fills a cup, takes a big gulp, and when he realizes it's not booze, he
sprays it back out of his mouth.

Otis: What's THAT?
Andy: Water, Otis. Pure, clear, spring water.
Otis: You fellas actually drink that stuff?

Here I go again referring to the Book. I hope I'm not too obtuse here. I
hate it when I get obtuse. But since I started the "triple" discussion this
time, let me state again what a pure triple is. It is not just something
being repeated three or four times.

It takes two examples to establish a pattern or expectation, and one more to
disturb that pattern with the comic event.
For example Gomer "a Decoy, Shazam" Gomer "a Decoy, Shazam"
Barney "A Decoy" Andy (deadpan) "Shazam"
---------
I smell Gas, I smell Gas, I smell Gas
Barney "of course you smell gas, what do you think this things runs on,
coal?"

OK, now keep guessing at Paul's question.

I asked about the spit-take yesterday. Another similar comic technique that
I don't believe we see often in TAGS,is slapstick. Most should know what
this is. The tomato (that Barney throws at Otis) is the closest I can
think of to true slapstick. We don't even see Otis when he falls, we just
hear the thud...Well Otis in the cell with the goat would probably be
considered slapstick also. Your thoughts?
---------
I'm enjoying the Mt Pilot discussion. All of us from small towns remember
where the Mt. Pilot was in our life. There was always a nearby larger city
that had the things that our little towns just did not have. (Dentists,
Lawyers, Miracle Salve companies etc). "You've got to go to Mt. Pilot to
get a good suit!" I think that's why Mt Pilot was supposedly larger.

I'll shut up for a while now because I'll be off the air for a few days.
I'll be traveling one of the many roads we face in life. Dusty gravel
roads, New and improve roads etc.

I'm going down a road

I guess SOME people just DON'T read every issue of THIS
particular electronic publication. Perhaps the "foot" of
this publication should be ammended to say something like:
"Past issues of these electronic newsletters are available
at "blah, blah, blah". I-- too-- am no "electronal-marvel"
as Barney might mispronounce to the world-- or maybe I on-
ly chew my cabbage ONCE as another Mayberrian'd say. But I
will repeat a few things -- even "I" said-- that shouldn't
need to be written EVERY SINGLE WEEK, here,:
1. Obey all rules.
2. Don't write on the walls.
3. Miller's sells ALL the TAGS on video currently available.
If you live somewhere where NOBODY's actually BUYING those
TAGS videos that are "currently out-of-print [not availab-
le]" but ON the shelves of your local WAL-MART,K-MART,etc,
then BUY them. They are "lost gems along the road of life.
But, they are NO Columbia House Tapes. The quality is appro-
priate to WHAT you paid, and/or, they are the same 50(or so)
episodes that somebody forgot to renew the copyrights on. If
you want the OTHER 200 episodes-- and the pilot episode from
the DANNY THOMAS SHOW-- go to Miller's and COLUMBIA HOUSE!
Buyers beware ALL other sources. Your neighbor's tapes home-
made tapes would be better quality dupes. By the way, I have
over 60 tapes bought THROUGH the TAGS newsletter. While the
quality of the videos are as good as can be expected -- they
miss moments here and there-- MOST of the episodes just are
NOT available anywhere BUT Columbia House. WHY? Because that
is who OWNS THE VIDEO RIGHT to the series for purchase.
The only problem with the 20 tapes from Columbia House is:
Two tapes are not available right now--
tape #11 FATHER & SON
tape #18 BARNEY'S BLUNDERS
those tapes contain a few other episodes other than those
listed on the tape boxes. Some folks GOT them, some
didn't. I've got 18-- and love WHAT I have!

Hey all,

Thinking about the three in a row phrases by DIFFERENT characters that Paul
brought up:

1. I think there is one in Otis Buys a car with the line "Drowned. Drowned?
Drowned." Spoken by Andy, Otis, Barney. Im not sure though, Barney may have
said the first drowned.

2. The other one I thought of was in Opie The Birdman when the cat comes
around (this one might be four if you count Aunt Bee) when Opie, Andy and
Barney say "A Cat!? A Cat !? A Cat!?" and then Aunt Bee says it but I think
after a few lines.

Anyway, that's all i thought up so far.

Friends,

I want to ask that when you make comments here on the Digest that you are
CAREFUL about how you say them.

Mayberry (our corner of it) is a friendly town. That means we, as electronic
citizens, should be friendly and kind to one another as well. That means
that our posts shouldn't be written in a way that sounds "mean." After all,
who amoung us wants to sound like "Ben Weaver" to other folks?

Again...it's HOW YOU SAY things that give others their impression of you so
just think about that before you post a message. I don't want folks to think
any of us are "Ben Weaver's" and I hope that we can do our best to keep our
comments in the Mayberry spirit.

I'll say this too....I've been running this list for a LOT of years so if
folks ask the same question every few weeks and I don't get upset about
it...well....I'd think that y'all could let it go as well. You have to
remember that we have NEW NEIGHBORS joining us every day and those folks
don't know what went on a week, a month, or years ago. They have the same
questions that you and I had when we started visiting our little corner of
Mayberry.

I hope folks were nice to you on your first visit so repay their kindness by
being kind in return. After all, that IS the Mayberry thing to do.
