Yep, that was him all right, the man who says the immortal line "Youth is
wasted on the wrong people!" trying to get George to kiss Mary.

Remember the scene with the bank run, where everyone shows up at the Bailey
Building & Loan to get their money? George (Jimmy Stewart) kisses one woman
on the lips for making such a small request. That woman, of course, was
"Hubcaps" Lesch/Grandma Walton herself, Ellen Corby.

And don't forget, Nick the Bartender was TAGS' executive producer, Sheldon
Leonard. BTW, "It's a Wonderful Life" is my favorite movie of all time and a
poster advertising its original release hangs in my living room.

I believe that Sheldon Leonard played a bartender in It's A Wonderful
Life. He was the original producer of our beloved TAGS if memory serves
me. When he appeared at MGM down here with Andy, he made the following
oh-so-true quote: "I don't think folks will be watching Roseanne 40 years
from now!" in response to other remarks about the longevity of Mayberry.

Besides Dick Elliott (Mayor Pike), there are a couple of other TAGS
connections with this great Christmas film. The woman who worked with
George Bailey at the Building And Loan appeared on TAGS several times,
although I can't think of specific instances right offhand!! And of course,
Nick the bartender was played by TAGS creator and producer Sheldon Leonard!

Here are a couple of "bloopers" for all you "trained noticers" out there. I
noticed these recently watching through some of my tapes (I have every
episode of TAGS and Mayberry RFD in chronological order!):

1) In the "Bringing Up Opie" episode, when Opie is sitting on the back of
the pickup truck eating apples, you can see the reflection of someone (a
crew member?) in the window of the house behind him. It looks like a man in
a white shirt walking to a chair and sitting down.

2) In the episode "A Medal For Opie," Opie is dreaming of winning the
50-yard dash. When Barney fires his "starter's pistol" and the boys break
from the starting line, Opie is wearing a dark-colored shirt. But when he
crosses the finish line, he is wearing a much lighter-colored shirt. I know
weird things like that happen in dreams, but I think this would still
qualify as a "mistake."

Just a couple of things I hadn't noticed before...hope all you Mayberry
folks had a Merry Christmas and best wishes for a great 2003!!!

You might recognize the following actors from both "It's a Wonderful Life"
and "The Andy Griffith Show":

Charles Lane, who played a real estate salesman, is best known to TAGS fans
as "that darling Mr. Frisby", whom Andy never particularly cared for, if you
want to know the truth.

Mary Treen, who played Cousin Tilly, appeared on TAGS three times, most
notably as Rose, Andy's housekeeper who married and moved away in the first
episode.

Frank Albertson, who played Sam Wainwright, appeared in the "Gomer Pyle,
USMC" episode as Colonel Watson.

Argentina Brunetti, who played Mrs. Martini, appeared as "La Farona", "Queen
of the Gypsies".

There was also a brief appearance by Ellen Corby (Myrtle "Hubcaps" Lesch from
"Barney's First Car") as a depositor at the Building & Loan.

And don't forget Sheldon Leonard, TAGS' executive producer - he played Nick,
the bartender at Martini's.

Did I miss anybody?

Best wishes to you and yours,
"Leon" (:-D

Subject: Mayberry Mania Game
Date: Thu, 26 Dec 2002 15:05:09 -0500

Just like Anita Carpenter, I too received a Mayberry Mania Game for Christmas.
Finding formidable opponents is difficult but my wife is a BIG fan too so she
gives me a little competition. We played a game the other evening and I
noticed a problem with a couple of the questions. The answers to some of the
questions were wrong. For example, one question was: "What gift did Luke
Comstock give to Andy?" The correct answer is "a shotgun" but the answer
given on the Mayberry Mania Card was "a hunting rifle" which is incorrect.
Another question which gave an incorrect answer was: "Who is the town
barber?" This question was one of the multiple choice questions and we all
know the correct answer is "Floyd Lawson" but according to the Mayberry Mania
Card the correct answer is "Floyd E. Otis." Obviously we know that is not
right. Of course I haven't read through every question on every card but I
will be watching out for other incorrect answers when I play. Has anyone else
noticed any incorrect answers given on the Mayberry Mania Cards? Maybe we
better stay on a Number 2 Amber Alert until all the incorrect answers are
located.

I hope everyone on the list had a Merry Christmas and I wish all a very Happy,
Prosperous, and Safe New Year.

With all the posts about 'Post' products, which fell under the General Mills
umbrella, let's not forget the 'Shake n' Bake' commercial that featured Aunt
Bee and Opie in 1968.
As far as 'It's a Wonderful Life' is concerned, look for an appearance by the
man who helped get the whole TAGS ball rolling, Sheldon Leonard.
