Every time I watch Mayberry on Record I have to chuckle about the reel to
reel tape recorder that was used to record all the Mayberry musical talent.
During my early days of teaching I had access to a tape recorder exactly
like the one shown in that episode. I was teaching sixth grade in 1968 and
I used a recorder to tape my student's oral reading and also various poetry
recitations, etc. My point being; the quality of the end product was very
poor. I cannot imagine Mr. Maxwell being able to use such a device to
produce a salable record album. I always felt a bit sorry for poor Barney
too, as everyone else was able to play and he was left out. I always
thought he played rather well, although as we have often noted, he had the
habit of holding the harmonica upside down at times.
