Thanks to Thelma Lou (Janet) for her good points relative to statements like
those quoted above. Such declarations could be seen to belie the very
things of Mayberry that others are trying to protect and defend. All of us
Mayberrians have human imperfections, and sometimes we misunderstand our
brothers and sisters on both sides of the fence--defense and prosecution.
Sometimes there are small efforts, however well-intended, to make this an
exclusive club. I hope that's not inherent in statements and thoughts
similar to the above. Does Goober still guard the club's door, asking for
special passwords from those attempting to enter?

If we have and represent the best thing going on TV and in society -- let
Mayberry joyfully ring throughout the land -- we don't need to be defensive
and exclusive. Perhaps there are times when it's appropriate to ask for
clarification of statements and intentions, even in Mayberry. I have asked
for clarification on a number of WBMUTBB occasions. We can all remember
moments when various TAGS characters were temporarily in a tiff over
misperceptions and misunderstandings. Poor Howard certainly offended (for
awhile) a few of Mayberry's leading citizens with his TV comedy routine!
I, personally, have heard people in real life who have given the French
word, "corps," the anglicized pronunciation, "corpse," with no thought of
slander. It's actually not too far off base, for the Old French "cors"
(core) comes from the Latin, "corpus body," 1707. On the other hand, I
also think it's okay to ask for clarification and definition.

E-mail is a mysterious elusive thing. We read only syllables and words,
minus vocal inflection, facial expression, and mannerisms of personal
expression. Therefore, we are sometimes left to wonder just what the
writer was attemtping to communicate. Guess that's why Floyd was so irrate
and angry with Goober when the filling station prize was misread to be far
more dollars than Goober's available funds, thanks to improper grammatical
punctuation. Now, before I burst into song . . . "From the Halls of
Montezuma, to the Shores of Tripoli" (bucket or no bucket) . . . I see and
understand both sides of the issue and hope clarifications have made things
right again. We all have values, ideas, and convictions to protect and
defend. That's just as it should be.
Semper Fidelis! Long live Mayberry! God bless us all, everyone.
