It is amazing how often a TAGS episode will bring back some long ago
memories from days gone by. Episode 136 "Opie's Fortune," where Opie finds
Parnell Rigsby's purse containing $50, certainly brought memories back to
me. When I was growing up in the late '50's I had a secret source of
income. We lived in a small town and about two blocks from our house was
our village auditorium. It served as both our school gymnasium as well as a
dance hall on Saturday nights. Every Saturday night for years, wedding
dances were held in this building, so very early every Sunday morning I
would get up and walk back and forth in the parking lot of that dance hall.
I was searching for money that people dropped when reaching into their
pockets for their car keys after the dance. I was never disappointed in
that every Sunday morning I was able to find various amounts of change lying
on the ground. But one Sunday morning I found a torn and dirty ten dollar
bill. You can imagine how excited I was. The only problem was that none of
the stores would accept it because so much of it had been torn off. So I
took it to the bank and they sent it somewhere to see if it could be
replaced. I had almost forgotten about it until one day weeks later the
bank called and told me they had a brand new ten dollar bill for me. I
never revealed my Sunday morning sunrise adventures to anyone and I
continued my Sunday morning searches well into my high school years.
