I'm way behind on my Digest reading so forgive me if this conversation has stopped......but did anyone consider that just maybe Barney and Andy are related by way of Opie's mother? He could actually be a brother-in-law or a cousin of Andy's wife. I have a cousin-in-law (by way of an exhusband) that I call Cuz. At least it would answer why Aunt Bee never refers to Barney as a relative. And Opie never called Barney Uncle. And they only reflected on the cousin relation in just the first few episodes so maybe the writers decided they shouldn't actually be kin related so they let it drop. We don't hear about them being related in later seasons. Us Southerners have LOTS of cousins.....
