I think that Aunt Bee really was Andy's blood relative. But calling ladies aunt even when they aren't blood relatives is a Southern thing, I think. I have two dear ladies that are like a second Mother and Grandmother to me and I refer to both of them as "aunt". It's really a term of endearment and respect and sometimes has nothing to do with being a relative.
