My wife Linda and I just returned from our third overnight stay at the Taylor Home Bed and Breakfast. We had a wonderful time as usual and we met some delightful small town folks at the Clear Lake Library where I did a presentation. Unfortunately our visit was saddened by the tragic events at Virginia Tech. How ironic that during a time of a terrible national tragedy we were able to escape to Mayberry and for twenty four hours be shielded from the bitter realities of today's world. Isn't that what Mayberry is all about? A place where we can go to find release from society's pressures and demands. A place where there may be discord, but certainly no hate. A place where the only time you hear gunfire is when Andy is shooting crows or Barney is putting another hole in the courthouse floor or ceiling. My heart and prayers go out for all the people who were affected by the events at Virginia Tech. May the true spirit of Mayberry somehow find its way into all those unfortunate people and may it help them to still find the goodness and love that abounds in so many people and in so many places.
